I don't know the details, but I just heard that the plug was pulled on the back-up production to be staged by the SoWal High School theatre department. Does anyone have any information?

back up production?

Yes, the first choice was Blithe Spirit. See previous thread: http://www.sowal.com/bb/showthread.php?t=16415&highlight=blithe

There was a complaint. The WCSB allowed the play to go on. There was an appeal by the complainants causing the production to have to be put on hold and not allowing for enough time to produce that certain play. So Mr. Goodrum chose a back-up play.

Now I hear the same complainants have asked to review the newly chosen script, and so the principal pulled it. I don't know the facts, but would love some more information.

I am assuming it is the play that was chosen to replace Blithe Spirit, since there wasn't time to do that one due to the "challenge" (read:censorship). I am heading to the high school and will find out what is going on.

I don't think that the few people who are having a problem with these works are going to be happy until Christian show is selected.:bang:

How would you like to be the child who's Mom or Dad was behind this?

That is the real kicker. Apparently they do not even have children at the school. :pissed:

Dont these folks know that sour grapes are only good for wine? If Ewing had any spine he would tell these people that it is none of their business if their kids are not involved. Unless it is one of the faculty/administration that is the complainant. Instead of worrying about the content of an play put on by students he should be figuring out who hacked the main frame and deleted students work.

Can't they just put on "Oklahoma!" and be done with it?

I'm sure I am stating the obvious here, but if these parents don't want their children to see the play, they should simply prevent their children from being in the cast or attending the performances. Better yet, be proactive and take their kids to the play and spend some time explaining their issues with the material.

Students shouldn't be sheltered from important life topics. These banned plays or books give a different point-of-view on social issues and expose us to things that do occur in the real world.

(Of course, I have no idea what the play is.)

"Any Number Can Die" is (oops, was) play #2. A murder mystery/comedy. A few benign voodoo references. All in good fun kind of stuff.

These nice people that want to protect our children apparently feel that they are doing the right thing here. Unfortunately, the kids have no voice.

How do these people know what the plays are if they don't have kids in the school?

Well, I'm thinking that the principal and the fine arts head should have some back bone here. Good grief.

It's a sad day when a few bible thumpers impose their personal belief. What would happen if they were voted against and thus ignored?

There appears to be an axe to grind, and they are looking. It has been mentioned by several people that Walton County ending Christian prayer before sports events may have been the catalyst. Never mind that the surrounding counties made this move 10 years ago, so the story goes.

Careful, the mime might give them the finger.

I don't have children in school, but can't parents who do file a similar complaint? Why should only one side be heard and responded to....

This is probably the members of a very large church located in SOWAL, not saying where, that home school all of the children. But since their base school is SWHS, they more or less spy on everything that goes on.

Guess this high school didn't have a problem doing Any Number Can Die....:(

"The award winning drama department of Shorecrest High School is pleased to present their latest production, a hilarious take-off on mystery plays popular in the late 1920?s.
Murder, mystery, and mayhem, in the marvelous tradition of the 1920?s thrillers, combine to create an evening of entertainment sure to delight any audience. Guests trapped by a severe storm in a Victorian mansion and terrorized by a masked murderer, who inhabits a maze of secret passageways, is situation enough to raise havoc with the characters?and the audience?both frantically trying to figure out ?Who?s next?? and ?Who done it?? Written by Fred Carmichael, this hilarious comedy playfully pokes fun at all aspects of the corny thrillers of the Roaring Twenties."

Wow- sounds evil and dangerous to me.

I know that the principal and drama teacher are handling this one properly. Remember, these complaints/appeals have guildlines to be followed. Due process...
