He drew a picture of a water gun, showed it to another child on the bus whose mother complained, and he got suspended.

People who fish and hunt from boats need to follow safe boating practices, especially the wearing of a PFD. Accident risks are high among this group of recreational boaters.
They went overboard don't you think?
- Anglers and hunters often don?t consider themselves boaters and often pay little attention to learning and observing boating safety rules.
- One third of all boating fatalities involved someone who was hunting, fishing or on the way to hunt or fish.
- Many water-based hunting and fishing accidents occur when a hunter reaches for a decoy, or the boat capsizes from an unbalanced load, or a person falls overboard while standing up.
- All outdoor sports enthusiasts who use a boat need to properly educate themselves in boating fundamentals
- Remember, dress for the water temperature, not just the air temperature (Cold Water Immersion).
- Pay particular attention to the capacity plate information and never overload your boat.

Isn't this the same city where the mayor disappeared for 2 weeks only to show back up and resign?

I think they overreacted, but it's sort of a Catch-22 for schools. When they do react to a seemingly innocuous event, we condemn them for being excessive, when they don't and something happens, we call them negligent and demand to know why they let it happen.

Then if that's the case regarding no guns policy, then they will need to remove pictures out of the history schoolbooks.
The kid didn't come to school with a water gun and start shooting kids with it and disrupt the classroom for goodness sake.

No, but he was suspended after an incident on a school bus that led to a parent complaint.
My guess is that the other kid came home and told the parent "so-and-so drew a picture of him shooting me with a gun".............fast forward to the AP being involved!
I know it's not the norm, but it HAS happened:
Feb. 29, 2000
Mount Morris Township, Mich. Six-year-old Kayla Rolland shot dead at Buell Elementary School near Flint, Mich. The assailant was identified as a six-year-old boy with a .32-caliber handgun.
The above was obviously an extreme case, but still happened. Most school shooters are 14 or 15 or older.

Probably that's what happened. But at the very least, the school could have called the other little boys mother to discuss it.

I'm not a fan of zero tolerance policies (love the person who said "often zero tolerance=zero brains"), but they became necessary because everyone got sue happy.
If it isn't explicitly spelled out as school policy, someone claims favoritism, discrimination etc. If they get a complaint and act in accordance w/ the policies, they're excessive, if they don't do anything they're allowing bullying etc. and get lambasted for that.
In my world, the parent would have just called the other and solved the problem, but that isn't the current reality.

I can see a policy of no guns in school, but a drawing, gimme a break.
I wonder if that was spelled out in their policy?
Had this issue the other day with my 11 year nephew. He wore a green stripe in his brunette hair that washes out. He was sent to the principals office. She told him it was against school policy. He asked why the other boys could have permanent stripes (highlighting) in their hair? (which seems to be the rage now with the boys) and my sister was called and she told him that he was being insubordinate. (He's also an A student)
The same day they lost my 6 year old nephew on the wrong school bus.

I'm not saying it was justified or intelligent, just that this is what it's come down to because of parents biatching, the media, lawyers, insurance etc.
As far as it being policy, the article you posted states:
"Although it is not common, cases of young children suspended for depictions of weapons have occurred in other schools across the country and in New Jersey."

I've known parents who refused to buy their little boys toy guns or allow them to watch t.v./movies with guns. The boys end up taking a big bite out of their toast, pointing one end at someone, and shouting, "BANG!" (Or they build them out of sticks, or they point fingers.) Boys like to shoot things. Hunter-gatherers. God love 'em.

Privitization of education. I keep saying it. School plays, school prayers, school buses, school policies, academic standards. I went to public school and did fine, but this stuff is effin' ridiculous.

give me a f67498 break ! (is that right SCK?) Wonder what schools are going to be like when mine start...I'll probably be in front of a judge myself every other week
Maybe they'll just hold court IN school. This makes me want to slap the bull butter out of a principal. Can I be jailed for making that statement??

It's completely out of control and extremely ridiculous.
All of this nonsense was why I stopped being a camp counselor - there were just too many rules (often contradictory) and liability concerns overruled everything.

If you are, please don't take personally. It just seems sometimes people in general, don't have much common sense anymore. Everything is sooooo PC.

19 years ago, Steven's preschool teacher shut down the housekeeping center when the boys began using the bananas as guns. I am sorry, but it still makes me laugh.

Principal what? Principal smart-aleck in the Sarcasm Symphony, maybe. I just thought the "beat the bull butter" thing was hilarious...
But if I were a principal, I would have still laughed!
