I went for a walk in the woods this morning. I just found a tick attached to my hip this evening. I removed it and am a bit panicked knowing the different diseases they carry. I have cleaned the wound with alcohol and placed the tick in a container in the freezer in the event I need to take it to the doctor. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm freaking out a bit at the moment. I've never had a tick bite before and have only heard horror stories. The internet didn't help soothe my fears.
SJ, I have noticed that you are a wealth of information on many topics. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Back last year I ended up with three attached to me over a period of a couple of weeks. Two on my hip and one close to another spot I cannot mention. One was really tiny, hoping it wasn't a deer tick which carries lyme disease. You did the right thing with the alcohol. I too applied alcohol to the places where those were attached on me. And they were attached to me all day until late in the evening. There was someone on this board that replied to my posts back then that had lyme disease themselves. Don't remember who they are but maybe they will post on this topic. Ticks give me the creeps. :creepy:

Phoenix, I sent you a PM.
First of all relax......
If it was a deer tick, most of the ticks in Walton County do not carry Lyme disease. (A study was done at Eglin AF Base)

Make sure you got the area cleaned with alcohol, that you got everything out, and you can put some Neosporin on the bite.
You can put a circle around where the bite was with a marker too to watch for a bullseye rash.

Even if by the smallest chance you did contract Lyme disease, it is easily curable in the early stages.

Now go have a beer or drink or something and chill.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, but I did spend the night at a Holiday Inn Express.

You need to be put on Minocycline which is what my primary physician puts me on when I frequently have an embedded tick due to the fact that (a) I sleep with a dog :funn:, and (b) there are 4000 contiguous acres of undeveloped property (as in the size of the Principality of Monaco) next to our property which is full of deer and other critters. And ticks love me.

Thanks Mango. After a hot shower and a large glass of wine I'm feeling better. :D I'm not one to ususally freak out. For the most part I love nature. When I see snakes I have to venture close enough to see what kind. (Much to the chagrin of my husband.) My daughter and I catch geckos, anoles, frogs, toads, tadpoles, caterpillars, etc. and I thoroughly enjoy it. There's something about ticks that makes my skin crawl......right up there with tape worms! (Never experienced that.....knock on wood!!!) :yikes: Thanks for the kind words and the reassurance. This won't keep me out of the woods, but I'll definately be more careful.

I'm in the woods all the time, and I've found fewer ticks on me than I can count with one hand in my lifetime. If I'm crawling through bushes in the warm months, I will sometimes recruit my mom to give my head a once-over (good excuse to have her play with my hair--do little girls ever get over that?) But I have been bitten by ticks and spiders and more mosquitoes than I can count. I'm sure you'll be alright.

I don't know the actual odds, but I figure your chances of being okay are pretty good. Mango and BR give good advice!

Mother used Camphophenique for ticks. They'd loosen their grip and could be removed without the head breaking off. Works!

No. Who's Blanket, and why would his "Dad" look that way? Nevermind; I don't want to know...:creepy:

I think I already posted this somewheres, but I'll 'splain it again here because I'm crazy about you:

When I was in NYC, we were walking from Broadway to the Library and I glanced up and saw, um, her sitting in the park. You can't really tell from the picture, but she's actually wearing a tight black hood under the hat, and her lips stood out at least 4 inches from her face. A striking profile, to say the least, especially with that lipstick.

She was so, er, stunning that I had to stop. I pointed up above her head, said something loudly to my friend Miquel about the wonderful branching structure of the trees in the park, and snapped this picture.

Here's the funn part: After we had gone a little further, Miquel asked me if I got the purse in the picture. I said, "Huh?" and she said, "The purse. Didn't you see her purse? No--don't go back and look, but it said Eff You on it."

The guy with us said, "Are you sure? Maybe it was one of those FCUK purses." She said, "No, it looked like it was painted on or something." None of us really knew until I loaded the pictures. (Notice, though, that the color exactly matches her nails...) Of course I cropped it a little bit so that I could use it on the board...

Wascally Wabbit.

Now that you mention it, I often wonder why I'm crawling through the bushes, too.

Rita, last time it was for a client who wanted the ivy pulled out of her gigantic azaleas. Yuck. Not funn.

Speaking of ivy and crawling through bushes. I just crawled through my barberries a couple weeks ago weeding, pruning, etc. Ouch those stickers. I too planted ivy a few years back and its starting to spread pretty good. I want it to cover my entry way area. Is it really bad if it spreads too much? I like how it looks. :D

NoitHall's Tip of the Day: If you want to keep the ivy from going everywhere, train it instead of clipping it. Turn the ends back toward the middle. If you clip it, you will get extragrowth from the cut that extends in the direction where you didn't want it to go. (In other words, double your trouble.)

Barberries--ouch!

Just don't let the ivy attach to brick. We had some on the garage end of our house and it's roots or what ever you call the clingy things pulled the face off of our brick.

That stuff is BAD. It harbors all kinds of critters, eats up your brick and rots out the wood.

Back to the main topic: Ticks.

Lil seaside's previous Schnauzer had one get up his rectum, imbed himself, give him Lyme disease. We made a nice casket and headstone.

These little baturds are bad news!!!
