I got this little message from a friend of mine, and as a lover of children's literature I found it useful. If you don't believe the same things I do, I hope you'll still find it useful, just in a different way.
Regarding the movie "The Golden Compass"

Thanks for the second article. I also received the same email this week. I'm working on an article for our parents at church. Feel free to PM me if you run across any additional info. ;-) The book is also going to be available to kids in schools through Scholastic. Apparently the first book and movie are tame compared to the next ones.

Thanks for the link to the second article. It gave a lot more information than the first, which I too, had received earlier this week. I will be watching closely.

I don't believe Nicole Kidman would star in any children's movie that would be bad for children. Maybe, Im naive but I trust her more than that.
I would like to hear what she has to say about the controversey.

The more I read it, the more I think I might see it. The books, on the other hand...I'm still pondering that.
Kidman's comments only remind me that faith is such a personal thing. Even if the author meant it as a story about godlessness, it's possible (or likely) that others can interpret it from the exact opposite perspective.

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs...I am sure that movie studios would not take a risk of failure if the movie is that controversial. Goodness knows....most movies are HORRIBLE and should not be seen by anyone! Murder, mayhem and debauchery. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Read the book first right? Make a decision based on source material rather than basing a charge of heresy on hearsay
. I read the book a long time ago, I thought it was bleh and didn't continue with the series though not from any sort of religious indignation. I think I've got them around somewhere, I'm gonna have to go look and read it again now and the rest of them.

The funny thing is that I think of the movie version of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Blatantly Christian, but didn't do much for me on the screen. I think studios take risks on the materials all the time, but then they dumb them down so much that nobody really cares anymore.

That's the thing, from what I read about The Golden Compass...they are hoping that unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie, that they'll enjoy the movie and then the children will want to buy the books. That's the hook. Tha author says he wants the children to read the books and decide against God and the kingdom of heaven.
Don't believe me? Read the plot overview...focus on the third book. And I don't need to read this series make an informed decision.

What am I missing in all the threads about the content of children's books, school plays, etc?
IMO, you expose yourself and your children to a variety of voices and ideas, and that is how you learn, strengthen your beliefs, and learn how to defend your ideas. Banning or boycotting a book, movie, play, just makes it more interesting to kids/ups the sales and gives the idea more credence than it deserves.
Find it very strange that people on Sowal are so concerned about the content of children's literature, but shrug at the presence of drugs, alcohol, and pregnancy in their children's schools at the 5th grade level (see private school thread).

Kidding.
Like I said, I'm not jumping on the boycott bandwagon yet on this one. For all I know, the movie will tank on its own.
Scooter, it's easier to abstractly swing away at literature and media than it is to combat the flesh-and-blood problems. It's that simple. I'm limited in which 5th graders I can protect, so I'm going to talk smack about this grown-up atheist.
I'm not shrugging, I'm cringing.
