I saw a commercial for this last night and am still in shock!

Move over Chia Pet and Oxy Clean, there's a new miracle invention available via mail order. I refer of course, to "The Back-up." This household must have is a metal gun rack that you install by slipping it between your mattress & box spring, allowing you to save time by having your firearm readily accessible in case of a home invasion instead of wasting precious seconds fumbling for it under your bed or in your bedside table.

Oddly not recommended for homes with children, this is being advertised as THE way to be ready for home invasion and secure your home and loved ones (at least until you shoot them coming back from the bathroom).

Not to be practical, but IMO, once you're involved in a gunbattle from your bed, you're pretty much screwed. Better to have invested in a better lock, home in a safer location, etc.

Before I get replies including the phrase "right to bare arms," I don't have a problem w/ guns. I learned to shoot when I was 9 or 10, my father & brother hunt (mom used to), and I was raised on a diet of venison, pheasant, wild turkey, and elk. I'm not anti-gun, but I am anti STUPID gun. This product has to be one of the stupidest things ever!

I can see the guy drinking a beer thinking about this "product". How about my truck's gun rack in bed next to me. I can see the bruises from bumping into this thing with your legs at night. I can visualize the oil stains on your bed sheets, and the cursing involved every time you change the sheets, and this contraption is in the way. How about putting the piece 12 inches lower on the floor? What a novel idea. This gift is perfect for the paranoid. You know who you are.....

Dang, what'll they think of next? If you feel you just have to have this contraption, you might want to:
a) move to a new neighborhood, or

b) change your line of work, (I hear it's tough to get out of the mob), or

c) take a close look at your own personality (particularly if you offend a lot of folks on a frequent basis.

d)all of the above.

I've fallen and I can't get up, but at least I can still reach my shot gun. They could combine the two products and when you remove the gun it'll automatically call the police.

The gun safety savvy target market for "the back-up"..............

Hunter recovering after being shot by dog
Pooch accidentally stepped on owner's shotgun, Iowa official say
Oct 30, 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa - A hunter is recovering after he was shot in the leg at close range by his dog, who stepped on his shotgun and tripped the trigger, an official said Tuesday.

James Harris, 37, of Tama, was hit in the calf Saturday, the opening day of pheasant season, said Alan Foster, a spokesman with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

?He had surgery and is doing pretty well,? he said. ?He took between 100-120 pellets in about a 4-inch circle to his calf.?

Harris was listed in good condition Tuesday, officials at University Hospitals in Iowa City said.Harris was hunting with a group about three miles north of Grinnell. The group shot a bird, and when Harris went to get it, he put his gun on the ground and crossed a fence. As he crossed the fence, his hunting dog stepped on the gun, Foster said.

The gun was about 3 feet away from his leg.
?The muzzle velocity is so great that the pellets don?t have a chance to spread out,? he said.

No one else was hurt, and the dog was not injured.
Foster said no citations have been issued.

Chaulk it down to my not being american and despite the fact that I have lived now in the US for over 10 years, I still cannot get used to the fact that almost anyone can own a gun - so odd, disturbing and perplexing to me.

So delighted (& surprised) that the "news blip" said "...and the dog was not injured" instead of "the dog was not charged with Man-slaughter"..... :floor::floor:

My personal experience is that most of the people who so strongly advocate no limits whatsoever on their "consteetutional right to bare arms" are the folks we really don't want bearing them in the first place.

I am constantly amazed at the lack of common sense and basic safety measures and the many illogical reasons for owning guns, especially certain types.

Don't forget the fact that we basically live in a "shoot first, ask questions later" state now. Maybe Mr. Kitty could clarify, but my understanding of the last law regarding guns passed in the state basically says: If you feel threatened by someone and have a gun (properly licensed of course) you can shoot them.
