OK,
So I was walking on E. Pt. Washington yesterday past the house that I always see this poor dog chained up in the back yard (that could be a whole new thread in itself). Well, he was loose, and came up to greet us. This dog was skin and bones. Ribs, spine, hip bones- all visible.
Here in lies my dilemma- do I call animal control, who will most certainly put him down, say something to the redneck owners and run the risk of having them dump him or worse, or do nothing?
Mind you these are the same a**holes that left a whelphing rotweiller (in the same condition) to fend for herself for for a week during Ivan with no food, water or shelter:angry:.

Why don't you call one of the animal RESCUE teams before calling animal patrol..I am sure they will give you the advice you need. NO animal should be subjected to this type of cruelty.
.go getem and thanks for caring! Pls let us know what happens.

as a stopgap measure you could bring about 3-4 cups of food with you on your next walk. continual abuse must be reported.

Absolutely, call them. They have the authority to make calls on whether or not to take the dog and / or fine the owner on the spot...

I wish that people had to be licensed before they could own animals or have children. What are your animal control regulations like down there. One of our local shelters has taken a no euthenasia policy and have developed a contract with an out of state faciliy to take any animals not placed locally..Stupid people

Just returned from another walk. Dog still loose, eating out of trash can. Doesn't look like the owners have been home since yesterday. I'm wondering if this is how these people operate. Un-chain dog when going out of town. Sickening.
I'm dropping off food & water on my way into 'town'.
Walton Co. is a kill shelter. That's why I hesitated calling them. I can't see them not siezing the dog on site. I don't want this dog to end up there, but I want him out of this horrible situation. Can any one give me the numbers of some local rescue organizations that could help.

I believe Bay county is no longer a kill shelter, we can Thelma and Louise the dog across the county line.

Where is Cork?? She is a super animal rights person....
I hate it when people treat their animals this way. Grace I would not want to call Walton County either. Do you know someone in Bay so that they could call their shelter???

Where is Cork?? She is a super animal rights person....I was under the impression that Bay was a kill shelter. I thought I saw a piece on ther news a few weeks ago about a cat being mistakenly euthanized after only 24 hrs in Bay.

Does anyone know of any local rescue organizations I can contact?

Grace, I know exactly what you are going through. My ex next door neighbors had a Jack Russell that they kept tied up in their yard. Winter, Summer, usually with little or no foor or water, or shelter. I watched this poor dog for a year live this way. I called animal control several times. One time, they let him off his chain. He came straight to my house. They were gone for over a week. I kept him in my house. To make a long story short, they did it one more time. When they came home, I went over there. I told her that I had her dog and how much would it take for me to keep him. Mind you she told me that they let him off his chain to find food. Freaking Idiots. Anyway, she said to me I have $40.00 dollars in him. I told her I would give her $50.00. She said well if I didn't need the money....whatever, can I have the dog? She said yes. This is a dog that weighed 12lbs when I got him. He is now lying right beside me with his big ole 28lb butt. I say all of this to say this. Maybe you could go and ask the owners if you could have him. Offer them money if you have it. Then get the dog and then find a home for him. Good luck, he needs to get the hell out of there!!!!

I asked them about the rotweiller that they left to fend for herself during Ivan upon their return and shorlty there after, the dog mysteriously disappeared. I shudder to think of what happened to her. I can't bear to think that they would do the same to this little guy.
Still asking for SOWALers' help with contact info for local rescue orgs that could help.

Spoke to Julie with at our vet's office, Kindness. She suggested you first call JOE with Animal Control for advice only, 585-9126. She said he was very kind, helpful and loves animals. He will probably have you call the Humane Society but just check with him. There are two rescue facilities; CARE 267-3123(this will be a home) and Animal Rescue 880-6399, Lori Hood is the contact person. Good luck and let us know if you need help dogknapping!

Keep feeding the dog and giving it water and the next time you notice no one home I'd go unchain the dog and take it. I would also try and keep an eye out to make sure that no one else is watching. People like this need a two by four across their head.

Just saw this poor dog with it's lovely chain around the neck. What a trash way to keep an animal.

How incredibly sad!!!!! I have never, ever understood why anyone would have a dog, as a pet, and keep it chained to a tree. It blows my mind.SoWal Expert
Why do people have pets if they aren't going to take care of them?
Take some pics for evidence, call the authorities, and get the poor dog out of there!
