Virus Going Around School

In the past couple of weeks has anyone had a child contract the virus going around the schools? I was warned about it by the teachers on Friday and then later that day my daughter came down with it. It involves fever, aches, frequent vomiting and diarrhea. I was told that just when you think it's over it hits again with upper respiratory symptoms. (Maybe the flu??) Does anyone have any experience with this and can share what to expect? Thanks.

our 3 year old and his teacher have come down with something like that. It was like a Linda Blair experience but he did not get the upper resp. problems. spiked a fever and went through about 4 days of V and D but seems to be recovering now! hit us about thur. last week! I did hear that maybe 2 other kids have got it now?

So far, no upper respiratory symptoms. Just severe muscle/joint aches coupled with violent V and D. Our whole house has it now and it is brutal. The doc said that it is going around the community and isn't isolated to any one school. He said it is a virus and has to run it's course. Based on other patients the duration seems to be about a week. Good luck to anyone with this in their house.

Everyone should carry some alcohol based hand sanitizer and use it frequently. This type of virus lives on surfaces where it is picked up by a host who then ingests it. Gas pumps, door handles, ATMs, pens, elevator buttons, anything on a shelf at the store...use that hand gel and you cut the chance you will pick the virus up!

I think you should give gallon size bottles of Purell to your friends for Christmas!

Will they let the kids bring it to school? If I was a teacher I would have a gallon on my desk and make the kids use it upon entering the room every time they left. I promise there would be an impact in colds and GI bugs.

Kate has a sink, stack of towels, many bottles of anti-b soap, and many bottles of hand sanitizer on the counter! Hope she is using it!

Good idea Dr Skunky. Hand sanitizer is on school supply lists here. My daughter buys her class all their school supplies because the parents are too poor. She actually bought the hand sanitizer by the case. Beats grading papers wearing a mask and gloves.

My 3 year old must have had that last night. Rough night for daddy and mommy! Fever that started late afternoon, sneezing, slight runny nose, then supper revisited just when we were all in a good sleep mode.
He seems good today, just a "schnooky" nose and he wants to lay around and snuggle. No appetite. I hope it's not a week long!

Skunky - would a flu shot help ward it off (help to build immunity to all bugs?) Kid's had their flu shots in October. We can't get sick - we're going on our cruise Friday - maybe I should pull them from school??

 That is a good question. My gut tells me that a flu shot probably confers no extra protection against non-influenza viruses. The flu vaccine is brewed differently each year based on prominent influenza strains being noted in Asia and elsewhere overseas before the flu season begins in the US. The manufacturer isolates a few virus 'parts' specific to the high risk influenza strains that seem to be dominating and prepares a vaccine that enables a person's immune system to recognize and destroy the virus if they are infected. So, the flu vaccine has some virus components that are pretty specific for influenza virus. Assuming this is another species of virus causing the SOWAL plague, say a Rotavirus, the Rotavirus would have to have a component in common with the Influenza virus for the influenza vaccine to work. I think this is unlikely.

I wouldn't hold the kids out of school, they just need to understand the importance of handwashing and avoiding others who obviously appear ill. And once you are on the cruise ship, keep on washing those paws as they are frequently ground zero for viral infections that cause nausea and vomiting!

Schools generally don't allow hand sanitizers that contain alcohol.

Thanks for the info, Skunky. I will continue to hound them about washing their hands and pray for good health. Any thoughts on the effectiveness of that "Airborne" product? We all take vitamins with extra C - wondered if the Airborne stuff really helped build immunity as well.

It is going around the Roane School. Thing 3 had it last week (we made 2 trips to the doctor's office) and so did Mr. Romeo. Now Thing 3's teacher has it. The high fever is so scary. Thing 3's was up to 105! Our pediatrician discouraged us against the flu shot (on the down low). Something about mercury.

I have found that zinc helps me when I have a cold, and I think Airborne has a bit of this. I don't think there are any studies that conclude Airborne prevents or shortens the duration of the common cold (except one done by the manufacturer;-)).

There is absolutely ZERO evidence that thimersol causes any untoward side effects in modern vaccines: http://www.cdc.gov/od/science/iso/concerns/thimerosal.htm

This pediatrician will tell you very openly to vaccinate your children until age 5 against influenza. Something about respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, encephalopathy, febrile seizures, sepsis, dehydration and possible death.

The entire Darg family gets flu shots every single year. Without fail. Every pediatrician, allergist, internist, family practice doc, and ear nose and throat doc we have ever seen in Kentucky and Florida has told us to get them, and I figure they must be safe if every doctor we see recommends them. It is an easy and safe way to protect your family. Kate has been getting flu shots since she was 2 years old.

There must be two different things going around. The one at our house has no upper respiratory symptoms at all. After appearing to get better my little one started vomiting again last night. This morning we had to rush her to the doc because she swelled up and had hives from head-to-toe. After a few injections the symptoms started to reverse. The doc said it was an allergic reaction to the virus. It was a little scary. The doc said there is no vaccination for this virus and it spreads rapidly in places where people are in close contact. Hopefully it will be behind us soon.

I have about 100 bottles in the cabinet and encourage students to bring it personal sizes to keep at their desk. Of course, if one has a hacking wet cough and doesn't cover one's mouth, the sanitizer doesn't really come into play there...:yikes:
