Deleting Explorer...?

Can it be done? I'd just as soon get it off the computer. If it came pre-installed, is it forever?

It depends, even if it is preinstalled you might be able to delete it. If will tell if you can. Or if there are shared files.

You can try. Simply go to add/delete on your control panel and try to delete it.

Why are you wanting to get rid of it. What browser do you use?

Are we talking Dora the Explorer or Microsoft Internet Explorer?

If its Dora, after you remove all her friends like Diego and Boots from the add/remove programs, the tough part will be Swiper. Swiper is very fast and agile, and something of a master of disguise. He seems to have a great deal of technical knowledge, as he's built a variety of vehicles and gadgets to help him swipe things.

Seriously, I just starting researching this because I upgraded to IE 7 and have been having some web pages freeze on me.
Here's the site I found that walks you through it.

Mango, when I upgraded to IE 7 I had problems too. So I went back in, took it off and just reinstalled the factory version from my computer CDs

Go to:
Start
Do not pass go. (sorry, wrong game)
Control Panel
Add or Remove Programs
Internet Explorer
Oh, wait, I bet you won't find it.
You are screwed and stuck with IE on your puter,
but you can remove the icon from your desktop by right clicking and selecting delete.

I don't want IE because I hate IE. SJ and John R schooled me well long ago, and now I want it off my new laptop.
Alas, SJ, Bdarg and Mr. Pod all say I'm stuck with it. Mangy has a program that says I can remove it. I'm willing to at least see what happens.
Minnie, come over to the Firefox side.

I'll check with my IT guy when he gets in and see if he has any suggestions.

My IE is removable, so it depends on how it was located on your computer from factory, what kind do you have?

WARNING, Pea2thePod, if you remove IE without doing so through the Add/Remove program, you risk removing other vital common shared files which are used by other MicroSoft programs.
I have no idea what Mangy's program is about and it might work. Personally, I leave IE on my puters. You never know when Foxfire may get hit with a bug from Microsoft (surely they wouldn't do that as they try to control the world ;-)), and you may need IE one day. I have found only one website which doesn't always translate FireFox, and that is ECARMLS.com. Most features work on there, but not all. At one time, ECARMLS.com didn't work at all with FireFox. I, and obviously many other FireFox users, voiced our complaints and Solid Earth, the software company to which ECAR subscribes, changed with the times. PlanetRealtor.com used to be the same way, but they, too, changed to allow FireFox to decode their stuff.
My point is, sometimes, I have to use IE to get the info I need from ECARMLS.com. Keeping it on your puter doesn't take up much space. Just tuck it away in a closet file and forget that it is there, unless the time comes when you need it.

Doh, :doh:I just read the small print and all it does is revert you back to the original version of IE previously installed. I guess Minnie was able to remove it completely, but Minnie, did you have any issues with other Microsoft programs, or did you re-install IE before you tried the others?

I just got the upgrade a couple of days ago and it's driving me bananas with the phishing feature. I hear so many good things about Firefox.

OK, I just found this article From January 07.

Internet Explorer Still Cannot Be Removed From Windows
Groklaw has an article arguing that Microsoft has not yet complied with the DOJ order that users must be able to remove Internet Explorer from Windows. "So he explained the blue and white screens of death, what a dual boot startup is, commingling code, and then tying or bundling, specifically tying Internet Explorer with the operating system. He explained how you can't use Add/Remove to get IE or Media Player off your hard drive, but that you can use SPAD, 'set program access and defaults', to choose Firefox or another browser as your default browser instead of IE. However, IE remains on your hard drive."

I'm not going to mess with it.

I agree fully with your comments about IE's phishing thing. Calling it a "feature" is just not true.

If you haven't tried FireFox, you can easily download it for free from Mozilla.com. They also have an email program, ThunderBird. I have not tested the email program. FireFox will allow you to copy your bookmarks from IE into your FireFox bookmarks. Keep IE (like you have an option - lol), and download FireFox. Use Firefox to access the web for a few days, and if you don't like it, remove it. I know of no one who has tried FireFox who didn't quickly learn to enjoy using it and never clicked on the "e" again. Maybe one exception was Audie -- seems like she was too comfortable to change. ??? Audie, you there? chime in, please.

Ummm, sorry to let you guys in on a little secret, but there is no way to remove Internet Explorer. The base program is Explorer and is integral to Microsoft Windows. If you don't believe me press ctrl+alt+del you will get the Windows Task Manager. Next press the tab the says prosses and start stopping the ones that say explorer. Sometimes the system can recover, other times you will crash and burn.

Oh, this is why when you open a folder it looks strangely like an IE window.

I started using Firefox on my MacBook and loved it. When I have to use my PC, I use Firefox there, too. I'm pretty sure I'm going to piss off the powers that be at school, because I keep downloading it on their computers...hee, hee.

Just ignore your Explorer/Safari/whatever. You won't notice them sitting there unused after a while.

Like SJ said, if your computer is set up where it is a removeable program you will find it listed under add/remove. If "not" I again agree with SJ, that I would not try to remove it for fear of removing other needed programs.

I do not like the new Explorer 7 so when it was added to my computer during a recent upgrade, I removed it and reinstalled my factory grade version, as SJ said you can download Firefox and use it and just leave the IE alone.

I personally do not have problems with the aol browser which is IE backed.

just use FF as your default and delete the shortcut from your desktop. I'd keep it as some people haven't come into the 20th century yet. ie; netflix won't work with FF, as well as some other video providers. so, ie is still good to keep in the background.
