I'm personally interested in this story. When I moved to Nashville, I met a whole group of wonderful people who had just moved there from California to work in the (for lack of a better name) "alternative" end of Christian music. I was very close to one of the families in particular, so I knew the whole bunch of them and all their little rugrats, who ranged from teen-aged to infancy at the time. (This was about 15 years ago.)

One of the people I met was a man named Jan Eric Volz, who did artist management work in the industry. Nice man. Never heard a bad word about him, which is saying something in the business end of music business.

As you may have guessed, Eric Volz is his son. I first read about this in People Magazine over the summer, and got in touch with the rugrats about it.

Since the moment Doris was murdered, Eric's life has been in danger. The evidence clearing him of this is overwhelming, and so is the rage against him as an American. His conviction has been overturned, but the judge who convicted him won't release him. The longer he stays in jail, the more enraged the mob becomes, and it becomes a greater threat that he will be murdered the minute he walks out of the prison. (The U.S. Embassy has been denied access.)

I don't know how much it helps to write your Congressman/Senator, but I did. If nothing else, keep him in your prayers.

This is a truly gut-wrenching situation.

Maggie, Eric's mom, is friends with one of my best friends....we have been praying for a long time for them. I do not personally know Maggie, but feel as if I do, through my friend.

Guess you've by now seen news (late today) that Condoleeza Rice is now publicly involved in this with President of Nicaragua...hoping and praying that Eric gets out of there and back to USA quickly...it is a travesty that he has been imprisoned for over a year now.

Thanks NoHall for the post on this....small world!

No! I didn't know about Condi--she's my HERO (and now even more so!)

Go get 'em, Condoleezza!

It's a ridiculous small world, and all we have is each other.

Probably, and his mother has been on the Today show twice this week.

She's in Nicaragua right now, fighting to get him out before the end of the day. The government offices are closing until after the holidays, and the judge who convicted him is using every dirty trick in the book to keep him. At one point she refused to sign the release because "it wasn't stapled properly." They've even resorted to "losing" (hiding) the case file earlier this week.

Because of the uproar, his mother is afraid that if he is sent back to the prison from the hospital instead of being released (he has been very sick) she will never see him alive again.

Probably so. My gull says anybody who's ever met Eric knows he would never do anyhting so haneous(sp?). This girlfriend was really 'movie star' beautiful. Did you see her pix? He wasn't even in the town when she was murdered, and has witnesses. My gull says now he's really sick with asthmaand something else like a fungal infection. I hope his mom gets her boy on her journey. I admire her courage. My gull says Eric is like her gullfriend Cary Ann, who she met Eric through, never met a stranger, and made friends wherever he went.

Here's the MSNBC story.

It's good to hear what your gull said about him. On t.v. he comes off as kind of aloof, but I probably would come off that way after going through all of this.

Doris really was beautiful, and the original stories about the case (maybe the article in People?) talked about how she wanted to work in the fashion industry, and she was actually killed in the store she had opened.

The irony here is that he got in trouble when he rushed back to San Juan del Sur to be with Doris' family, and Doris' mother is the one who is stirring up all the hatred toward "the Gringo."

My oldest gull and this entire town are really happy about his release too. :clap:I thought she met him through another friend, but come to find out they were in middle and high school together, strings class and ecology club, which included some fuNN camping trips. She said he was a year older and she had a big middle-high school crush on him, but she was so shy. She said he tried to get her to play both guitar and violin with her a couple times, but she was too shy. She said he was sooo cute with that curly hair. I hope he's safe back on US soil with his family by now.
