The maintenance guy said what I thought was a flying flea is aome sort of fruit fly variety that takes up residence in the sinks/plumbing when houses go unused.....he agrees..fleas don't fly...now I'm left with the nasty penetrating cloud of fumes from the insecticide...but alas I can rest easy...no more incoming insects to dodge

Yeah, they are relatively harmless, just annoying. Run water in every sink in the house for 5 minutes and flush the toilets. This should get the majority of them out.
