Letter to the Editor, Citizens and County Commissioners
This letter is written in regard to the article titled Aerial Spraying resumes featured in the September 24th issue of the Walton Sun.
The article starts by stating, ? if you notice a low-flying DC-3 airplane in South Walton, do not fear.? The short article continues about why the airplane is spraying (dog flies) but does not mention what the airplane is spraying. This is an interesting oversight.
Upon researching and contacting the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Bureau of Entomology and Pest Control it was and is determined that the airplane is spraying DIBROM NALED.
The agency provides a twelve page document pertaining to this Pesticide to anyone who cares to ask. We asked, and after reviewing it, we all must be in FEAR.
The opening paragraph titled PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS lists HAZARDS TO HUMANS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS, DANGER. It reads as follows: ? Causes irreversible eye and skin damage. May be fatal if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. May cause allergic skin reaction. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not breath spray vapor or spray mist.? Further down the document it states, ? atropine sulfate is antidotal?. Isn?t atropine sulfate the product the United States Department of Homeland Security advises our citizens to keep handy and use if we come under nuclear and or chemical/biological attack from terrorists?
Environmental Hazards are also spelled out on the first page of this long document. It includes, ? this pesticide is toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates, and wildlife.
Potential health effects of exposure to DIBROM NALED include, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, excessive sweating, salivation and tearing, constricted pupils, blurred vision, tightness in chest, weakness, muscle twitching and confusion. In extreme cases, unconsciousness, convulsions, severe respiratory depression and death may occur.
According to the article that appeared in the Sun, Dog flies can be a terrible nuisance but they do not transmit any human diseases. I find it alarming that this extremely harmful agent is being used and openly sprayed on our citizens including you and me, to rid our area of dog flies that pose no risk to humans.
Should we fear the plane?

Florida Girl - who are the ignorant ones here - those people that settled where ther is a lot of swampland and malaria, or the ones that killl all the wetlands by digging ditches? Truth is - the ditches were dug to creat dry (but very low) land for people to graze cattle, farm, and develop in other ways. All the natural areas were drained in the name of "progress".
All the mosquito ditches around here are stagnant most of the time. And they would have lots of frogs, minnows, and even small fish in them to eat skeeter larvae if we weren't spraying poison in them all the time.
What could be more ignorant than covering our lives in poison? I prefer to where long pants and sleeves.
The people making the decisions to spray are employees of the people. I hope that they are soon working at another job.

Perhaps you should go somewhere where they don't have Mosquito control! Although, most likely it would be in another country. Then perhaps you'ld know what it was like.

First, because you have never heard of it, does that mean it doesn?t exist? Are you all knowing? Yes, the Dog Fly plane sprays for Dog Flies! Perhaps the poisons would not be necessary if people would eliminate the standing water on their property! Mosquitoes can breed in ? cup of water! A leaf! The larvae can lay dormant until the next rainfall. This is why we cut the grass, and remove the big leaves! What do cigarettes have to do with Mosquitoes and Dog Flies? My father smoked forever, and had a heart attack and died in 1975; my mother lived separated from him since 1969, didn?t smoke, and died of lung cancer in 1987! Lastly, who said I know what you think? If the shoe fits, where it! The persons making the decisions concerning spraying usually know what happens if they don?t spray. Most of the old timers I know appreciate the spraying because they remember what it was like before they started the program.I do not have standing water in my yard nor in the drainage ditches in front of my house, yet my yard gets sprayed without my consent.
The reason for my comparison with smoking, is that I do not smoke. However, if someone else chooses to smoke, I have the choice to not be around them and their smoke. However, I do not have a choice to not be affected by the poison spray that is being mass sprayed over my property by mosquito control.
By the way, second hand smoke kills many people each year.
I know what it is like to be without poison sprayers and having my property sprayed should be at least a choice I get to make, not something that is forced upon me by my gov't.

I've been to many countries that most people here would not consider liveable. The mosquito control here is a waste of money. I agree with you about containers in people's yards. Skeeters are much worse in most neighborhoods than in the swamps. Especially low income neighborhoods with yards full of junk.

Perhaps you should go where they have mosquito control that use safer products that work to eliminate or control mosquito and not the human population.
The group that I have been working with are extremely educated and knowledgable on the subject and if you will attend the meeting you may become educated on our mission.
First of all, we are not trying to eliminate mosquito control. We understand there is a problem with insects and that different people have different reactions when biten. However, we also understand that the use of Chemicals such as Dibrom Naled and Perithrin (both of which are organophosphates) that cause unreversable damage to the nervous system and are cancer causing agents is not the proper answer.
Other areas of this country have proper methods of controling insects in place and that is what our focus will be about. We will provide material, research and alternative ideas at the meeting.
We invite all to attend

I have been to "third world Countries" that have pest management agencies in place. The main difference is that theirs are not backed by huge corporations such as Monsanto and a Medical industry that thrives off of the daily outbreak of Cancer.
Our pest management is out dated. There are products, methods and systems in place that are more effective than what we currently use in our County that also are safe for humans and household animals.
I recently spoke with a veternarian who traveled to the Tampa area after the West Nile cases were reported this past summer. This vet was there because an alarming number of domesticated animals, mainly dogs went into Kidney failure and died. There is research being conducted on the amounts of organophosphates that were in the animals systems. The Tampa area sprayed almost daily after the one case of West nile was reported.
Now wouldn't it be wise to use products that did not kill our pets instantly, our children slowly and ourselves over a period of years. Lets wisen up and listen to the other methods of proper pesticide management.

I hopw I'm wrong, but I have a suspicion that most people living here would rather be sprayed daily with poison than be bitten by bugs. If the government tells them it's safe then they are going to believe it.
And many people vacationing here don't care what's being sprayed if they're only here for a short time, truly. They would be like - "go a head and bomb the place as long as there are no flies on the beach during my week."

Dear Friends:
At times in life we need to put prejudices aside, step out of the box and question. It seems to me that all too often we fail to question. If they get us asking the wrong questions, then we never get the answers we need. :idontno:
Considering the downsides of something so prevalent in the environment is a sensible and logical thing to do. Education and awareness can bring about logical and effective change. I'm looking forward to the pesticide talk and hope that people come with an open mind.
..........viable options 101............ 😀

My wife and I were eating dinner the other night at Onano's in Rosemary beach (sitting on the porch) when the Mosquito Truck came by. We could not believe this. We got sprayed, our food got sprayed, all the other patrons got sprayed.
This is absurd. It certainly ruined a fine meal, a great night, and my attitude about Rosemary.
Is there anything being done, I mean really being done to stop this madness? We can not think that spraying people with poison is a correct position to take.

Unfortunately, the only way one can have an organic garden in SoWal is for it to be indoors. :bang:
