Poll for President

This thread includes a poll.

Poll voting is temporarily unavailable here. The discussion and replies remain available.

I thought it would be interesting to see the diversity of SoWallers, and we could do that by a poll, a Clinton favorite. As of right now, for whom would you vote if you had to pull the lever? We'll forget that some people are undecided. The poll is a blind poll, so no one can see who voted for whom.

I am limited to entering only ten names in the poll, so I am leaving out Mike Gravel (D), Duncan Hunter (R), Alan Keyes (R), Fred Thompson (R) (sorry 6thGen). That leaves the top five front runners for each of our two party system, according to the polls.

I understand why people say that, but a vote isn't wasted if you vote for the candidate you believe in. If enough people vote for Paul, the other candidates will have to begin addressing the valid issues he brings to the table.

Colbert dropped out, though he would have given Obama a run for the money. Last night, I saw a news analyst who looked very similar to Colbert and had similar mannerisms. I didn't get his name, but was really wanting to.

At this point, my choice is None-of-the-Above (even if you add all those other names back in.) :(

I'm waiting for Bloomberg & Nunn.:D

Actually Sam Nunn and David Boren (DEMs), William Cohen (REP) and a bunch of moderates are trying to bring some focus to the campaign.

A quote from the article found here.

Now, some people with high-level political and governmental credentials are moving to put muscle behind the effort. A letter from Nunn and Boren sent to those attending the Jan. 7 session said that "our political system is, at the least, badly bent and many are concluding that it is broken at a time where America must lead boldly at home and abroad. Partisan polarization is preventing us from uniting to meet the challenges that we must face if we are to prevent further erosion in America's power of leadership and example."

At the session, Boren said, participants will try to draft a statement on such issues as the need to "rebuild and reconfigure our military forces," nuclear proliferation and terrorism, and restoring U.S. credibility in the world.

"Today, we are a house divided," the letter said. "We believe that the next president must be able to call for a unity of effort by choosing the best talent available -- without regard to political party -- to help lead our nation."

Actually their goal is to get the candidates to address real issues and get away from demagoguery and soundbites.

I like this quote from an interview with Nunn in the AJC:

In a Sunday interview in Atlanta, Nunn also said he and former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, a Republican, planned to launch in January a series of detailed "truth-telling" seminars, made available through the Internet, on tough national issues that haven't yet found a place in candidate debates ? such as the federal debt, national service and the lack of a comprehensive energy policy.

Somebody definitely needs to bring statesmanship and consensus back to the table.

I agree with those statements. In 2004, Green Party Nominee, Ralph Nader, tried to get the Dems to take on issues. Instead, the Dems held up their party boundaries and kept the issues divided by party. In turn, we know that Nader won votes from people who would have voted DEM in the election. I'm tired of this two party system, and it seems that most Americans are. Issues need to be addressed, and party names and affiliation needs to be removed completely, in my opinion. We would have a more united country and might actually make the needed changes in our gov't. Until then, real people with real issues, will take a back seat to poliTRICKS. Thanks for the post, FBB.

You know, a good friend of mine said the same thing when he voted for Nader in 1992. And you know, if he and a couple hundred of his friends in Florida feel like Nader's issues were better served by electing George W. Bush, I can't figure out how.

At this point, my choice is None-of-the-Above (even if you add all those other names back in.) :(

I used to think Sam Nunn was a great man, and then he gave up his Senate seat to become a board member for following publicly held corporations: Chevron Corporation, The Coca-Cola Company, Dell Computer Corporation, General Electric Company. Let's see -- we've got big oil, one of the companies that led the charge for outsourcing manufacturing and service, and the company of the man who said that he has no responsibility to the American people, only his shareholders, when it comes to decisions about how to run his company.

Punzy, you sound as though you would like to keep the issues tucked away behind partisan walls. If the Democrats wanted to win, they should have taken on the legitimate issues of Nader. It was simple, and Nader let them know it. The voters who liked Nader's ideas, would have quickly jumped on board with the Dems if they had taken on the issues. They refused, and they lost. You might blame it on Nader, but it seems like the real blame of stubborness, would go to the Democrats, who preferred to fight rather than look at solving real issues. We all lose when the issues are looked at as belonging to one of two parties. Remove the walls, and then the issues will have a chance of being addressed and systems and functions improved.

Or maybe you don't like his views on the monetary system?
I think you saw last night that no one wants to debate him on the dollar. First, it's just not a sexy issue that lends itself to memorable sound bytes. Second, most of the other candidates really have no clue what he is talking about. But if you watch most of the "money watch" shows he is getting more and more support for bringing up the issues that they believe are the critical ones affecting our economy.

Is it his view on gay, woman, and civil rights issues? He believes that you don't have rights because you are gay or that your a woman or a minority. You get them for being human and the are the same for everyone; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As far as gay marriage he believes the government should not be involved at all. Think about it, what purpose does it serve for the government to be involved with marriage of two people?
You need a license to marry. Is that like getting a license to fish, or to carry a gun? To drive? Is the licensing "condition" suggestive of some sort of perquisite skill involved that prepares you for marriage? What, exactly, is a marriage license meant to accomplish? In dispensing licenses, the government grants permission to its citizens to participate in an action. In the past this was used to stop interracial marriages and now for gay marriages.

His views on immagration

Physically secure our borders and coastlines. We must do whatever it takes to control entry into our country before we undertake complicated immigration reform proposals.
Enforce visa rules. Immigration officials must track visa holders and deport anyone who overstays their visa or otherwise violates U.S. law. This is especially important when we recall that a number of 9/11 terrorists had expired visas.
No amnesty. Estimates suggest that 10 to 20 million people are in our country illegally. That?s a lot of people to reward for breaking our laws.
No welfare for illegal aliens. Americans have welcomed immigrants who seek opportunity, work hard, and play by the rules. But taxpayers should not pay for illegal immigrants who use hospitals, clinics, schools, roads, and social services.

About the only thing I can say bad about him is that he is not this larger-than-life figure that by personality alone could excite people. His following has been built by his ideas alone, not his presence. He doesn't have the TV presence of most of the other candidates. And he has gotten zero play from mainstream media but still pulled 10% in Iowa. About the same as
Mccain 13% and Thompson 13% and a lot better than Giuliani 3%.

I hope the rest of the country doesn't have your apathy, meaning that they think their vote for someone they , not you, believe in doesn't count.

Ron Paul has 12.5% of the overall SoWal.com/bb vote right now. Sounds like he's gaining ground. Hillary, Kucinich, and Richardson are no shows, and Giuliani is in the back. When everyone gets back to work tomorrow, they will log in and vote, so it may change quickly. It is interesting to watch. I wonder how many people look at the current rankings (votes) before making their own decision.

McCain as the republican and I am scared to say Obama or Hillary either. Lets just let McCain have it for at least 4yrs. It seems he earned it with his detention (put nicely) in the war.

What is scary is that people will vote for Senator McCain because he has "earned it". Maybe it is just me, but I don't think because someone has spent time a detention camp that he/she is qualified to be a president. I would rather hear you talk about the issues regarding the Presidential qualifications you think he has.

user 3 thanks for quoting that entire post, I missed part of it the first time.

ilikeyourteam, although Dr. Paul has the other candidates shivering, and has some worthy ideas, it's the fervor of his followers that make me more than a little nervous. It's almost cultlike. Anyway, how would Dr. Paul go about physically securing every mile of our coasts? Any links to that ideal?
Man, that's a huge list of where we have people.

Agreed, good point. Hopefully most won't just hand him their votes because of his war experience.
