Serial Killer found?

Maybe the case of Cheryl Hodges Dunlap can finally be solved. A young woman disappeared while Hiking north of my home on New Year's Day. Some of her clothing and her dog (still alive) were found at a gas station 60 miles away a couple of days later.

Several other hikers identified a man who was seen with her the last time anyone saw her, and he was apprehended shortly after the dog was found.

He led the authorities to her body last night, and now authorities are looking at links between him and several other cases, including Dunlap, a couple in North Carolina, and three other cases in Georgia. Here's the story.

In Georgia, the "Amber alert" is actually called "Levi's call," named for an 11-year-old boy whose body was found in Dawson forest 10 years ago. (That's very close to my home, by the way.) Perhaps his family can finally know what happened to him, too.

OMG, NoHall, how sad and creepy. Poor gull. I'll pray for her family. That man looks like he has satan in him, doesn't he? Interesting how he got to wear body armour. Hubba has always said, God forbid, if anyone hurt one of our gulls like that, he wouldn't think twice about blowin' their a$$ away. I say well, they'd put you in prison. He says , so what. Who knows what you may do as a parent? I remember in an airport in Louisiana back in the early 80's, when a grandpa blew away the man who abused and killed his toddler grandson , as he was escorted by police. It was all over the news. Remember he was standing at the payphone and turned around and boom.

It is such a small world. I know exactly where that murderer was found because that's right where I lived and hung out as a young teen. The apartment complex I lived in was on the corner of Ashford dunwoody and Johnson Ferry Rd. That's in Atlanta. It was called Rollingwood Apts. That gas station must be where the 'desert' of baby pines was where we rode bikes was . It was a round track in the red clay and baby pines back then, 1972~3. There used to be a Winn Dixie and a Ligget's Rexall Drugstore there too.

Holy schlamoly...I didn't even read that part. I lived in Sandy Springs for a while, and went through that area all the time.

My mother worked across the street from where they found her clothes and the dog; my gullfriend stops at that station all the time when she takes the kids to Dunwoody to see the in-laws.

This man has been wandering among us for such a long time. Gives me the willies thinking about it. Mom said that the autopsy said that he didn't kill her until Friday. I'm sure there is no punishment awful enough to pay for what she went through in those 3 days...

I lived in that area of Johnson's Ferry, in the late 80's! There are just too many crazies out there, to have your guard down! Meredith sounded way too trusting, of people! Bless her heart! To continue hiking with such a creepy man nearby, I just can't understand, what she was thinking! :idontno: Unfortunately, I can understand that grandfather killing his grandson's, killer! I'd be a psycho if anyone touched, my grandson!

The local paper (I don't think I linked that article) said that he had his yellow lab, named Dandy, with him. Apparently the dogs were friendly, and she gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Careful, all you dog people out there. You can't judge a dog by its owner, and you obviously can't trust a man just because he has a sweet dog...

I read that too NoHall. I would probably tend to be trusting and unafraid of a 61 year old man with his dog too. Sadly he was good at hiding the evil in him.

:yikes:Never thought of that trick. I'm gonna warn my gulls, and all the gulls and buoys I know.

The fact that she had a purple belt in Martial Arts couldn't help her, with the unexpected blow to her head! I read that he had a friend order the baton, that was probably used to strike her, in the head. That would be so hard to live with, knowing that you assisted, in that purchase!:( I've always read and heard that if you walk with confidence, you look less likely a target. Makes sense! Yes, the Devil wears many faces!

The local paper had another article on this tragedy, and included a lot of safety tips for hikers.

I thought it was interesting that one source said that given the number of murders on the AT versus the number of hikers, chances are only about 1 in 15 million that you will be a victim. Like SJ always says, you're more likely to die on the road...

Even so, those numbers don't make the loss any less painful for the families of these women (and possibly others.) :(

There was a story on GMA this morning about this. Seems the GA Highway Patrol had an encounter caught on video about two months ago with this guy when he was trespassing on someone's property. He was like...overly friendly to the cop. They talked for about 20 minutes and the video ends with the cop walking off telling him to "be safe". Creepy.

It wasn't GSP. It was a county sheriff's deputy (or that's how it looked on GMA). Not our GSP's typically blue uniform.

He ran his plates and his ID and found no outstanding warrants. They had no reason to suspect him at that point. Unfortunately, he wasn't doing anything wrong (except trespassing) which is rarely enforced.

Imagine how creeped out the lady is that called the cops on him for being on her land. ugh!

It just gets ickier.

My mother called to tell me about this article in the paper this morning.

It says,

"Gary Michael Hilton was at a Gainesville ATM trying to use a bank card belonging to Meredith Emerson the night she was abducted, officials said...

"As authorities trace the path taken by Hilton, Gainesville was apparently the first stop on a circuitous route taken by the suspect after he was seen talking with Emerson at the Byron Herbert Reese Memorial Trail in Union County on New Year?s Day."

This ATM is within sight of where I run on a regular (weekly or more) basis, within sight of where I teach in the summer and where I did my last musical. I live on the northernmost of the 3 main arteries between Gainesville and where she was murdered. It makes me ill to think that he probably drove her past my house before he killed her.

It's such a relief to know that he will never hurt anyone else again, but it will be hard to feel as safe as I always have...
