unbalanced ND publicity

There is an article in this month's issue of National Geographic entitled
The Emptied Prairie.

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/2008-01/emptied-north-dakota/bowden-text-p2.html

IMO it is the most unbalanced piece of journalism I have ever read. Charles Bowden makes it seems as if all North Dakotans are sitting around thinking of the best means of offing ourselves. Give me a break. Our governor is furious and rightfully so.

opinion article - http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=63682&section=homepage

When we were in Lousiana and Mississippi in October we saw plenty of abandoned buildings and closed businesses, but we also saw prosperity and beauty. Balance.

http://www.ndphotogallery.com/ for the "other" ND. (the wildlife section is my favorite)

I would welcome any reactions and impressions of Bowden's article, especially from those who have never been here (which would be pretty much everyone on the board!)

It's weird that Nat'l Geographic is so negative. The tone of the article is very much not their usual style. They make it sound like its more barren and depressing than Siberia. Usually even when they're negative they throw in a little color like the giant metal art. IMO the article is about as accurate as the accents in "Fargo".

Oops, I thought I had been to N. Dakota as a kid but all of the attractions I googled were actually in S. Dakota (wall drug, corn palace, etc).

Thanks for reading it and your input. Negative is THE word.

Though the article is not so accurate, believe it or not, the accents in 'Fargo' pretty much are. (though slightly exaggerated). Go into any small town diner in NoDak and you'll hear "ya, you betcha" and "how the heck are ya". Not kidding. We are right next to Canada, ya know!
