Been reading up a bit on Mitt's past. >>Mitt Romney: a Massachusetts Liberal for President
Question: Have his former left leaning social views legitimately "evolved" with new knowlege on various subjects, such as gay rights, abortion, etc.?
...Or, is he just a flip flopper, as the Dems. will try to portray him if he is the Republican candidate for President?
Any Massachusetts folks out there?

Why is it that when people do learn more, experience more, then change their views on issues, they are attacked for these new positions? The more you know, the more you do not know, so it is an ever increasing circle as truth and enlightenment are sought.

I'd like to believe that, but I do not completely trust most politicians of either party... So, you do not think there was any hint of tactical, political expediancy on his part in his re-framed social views?
I am sorry, I just don't buy it.

Worse case scenario, fiscally conservative, socially liberal, businessman running for President, I may have found my candidate. ;-)

Sure there was. The guy is saying whatever he believes needs to be said to get elected. The reason being that people have no respect for others beliefs, as much as they want someone who believes exactly like them on all issues. But I do know that things change. I have changed my mind ons things as I discuss and read about issues. I am sure that many do, but when you run for office, instead of enlightenment, it becomes pandering.

Hnooe,
Several things:
I don't think Mitt is pandering. No candidate has "fair and balanced" media coverage--the best way to get to know a candidate is to hear him/her in person and not many voters get that opportunity. In debates, appearances on news shows, etc., the candidate has a limited opportunity to define his/her positions. Mitt's positions and the issues (economics, immigration) that he is emphasizing have always been his since this campaign began.
Mitt has changed positions on some issues, but he did so before the campaign and he has enough integrity to 1) admit that he was wrong, in his opinion, about some things, and 2) to stick to what he believed in when he ran. If elected he will not morph back into being more socially liberal because he was elected as a person who had certain views. I believe that if he did change his views, those who elected him would be outraged, the Democrats and liberal media would have a hey day and Mitt Romney is not someone who would be o.k. with his integrity being questioned. At the same time, Mitt is not someone who wants to force people to believe as he does--he believes that everyone should have the freedom to believe as they do. Other candidates, particularly Huckabee and McCain have changed views during this election.
That being said, Mitt has a great respect for the law of the country and The Constitution, unlike Huckabee who has basically said that The Constitution is a "living" document (meaning that it can/should be changed through the Judicial Branch). Mitt said this morning that he believes in and follows The Constitution. He respects THE PEOPLE and if there came a time that THE PEOPLE wanted an amendment to The Constitution, then it should occur as outlined in The Constitution. In other words, he is not going to pursue a social agenda by nominating/appointing judges that he believes would change things to his liking.
I honestly believe that while Mitt is truly more socially conservative, those issues are not what is driving him to seek the Presidency. I think he is genuinely concerned about the economy, national security, foreign relations, the war in Iraq, etc. I think he would be focusing all of his energy into fixing what he says is broken and he would not try to amend The Constitution so that "it was more in line with God's laws."

Read Romney's resume. Focus on his education. Look at his tenure in Mass. Look at his accomplishments in business. Look at his family life. Read about his father. Then try to trash him.

I hate that campaigns are so much about momentum -- you know, like it's a basketball game and McCain has been on a 10-2 run since Iowa. But I see things shifting this week. A stock market plunge, worries about the economy, the job market, etc? Enter Romney. A new poll I saw today gives him a slight lead in Florida, and if you are going to be Romney trying to win Florida, this is probably the week to do it. Things could get very interesting before Super Tuesday.
Just sayin'. I feel like Steve Spurrier, circa early 1992, post SEC championship, sitting down to watch a Gators basketball game, snacks in hand. One of the most satisfied grins I've ever seen. "I've got my popcorn ..."

I keep hearing talk about McCain winning all these recent races in other states, but if McCain is supposedly winning, why the heck it Mitt kicking his booty in delegate votes, which are the ones which count? I really think that Mitt has the momentum in his favor.

McCain in the darling of the liberal media because he is a liberal. Romney scares the heck out of the media and they refuse to acknowledge that he is leading in delegates and popular votes. However, the media is also using polling data to define who the front runner is and so far McCain is still leading nationally, but that may change as evidenced by the Rasmussen Reports Florida poll released today.
The delegate votes are the ones that count.
