It hasn't happened yet, but the Buzz is it will in just a few minutes at the Pinellas Lincoln Day dinner. Only two hours ago, Buzz sat down with McCain, and it was clear he was not expecting an endorsement.
"I threatened him with everything including having to hire someone to start his car in the morning,'' McCain quipped. "I'm a great admirer of Gov. Crist. I don't know what Gov. Crist is going to do but I consider him a good friend and a fine governor. and no matter what happens as far as his endorsement is concerned, as a nominee in my party, the Gov. of florida is important, Important to the republican party and the nation. "
The above from tampabay.com and also announced on fox news a few minutes ago. Now the question being, how does this play with Republicans? Does this mean that McCain has picked Crist as a VP running mate? What about Giullianni? Rudy was the only one that was prepared to push for the National Cat Fund that Crist wanted. This is going to be some very interesting behind the scenes politics now.

If McCain was smart, he'd see that Charlie Crist is also endorsing Amendment 1, which sounds like it may fail to pass, and opt to distant himself from Crist. Now, Mitt is a sure winner in FL. lol

What would your thoughts be on a McCain/Crist ticket? Crist still polls over 65% across the spectrum. His numbers are just now starting to fall with the conservative Republicans that were hard core Jeb Bush. If Amendment 1 fails then there will be no relief on property taxes, as promised. And like everyone else, property insurance is not moving in the right direction. And the only guy running that was pandering to that problem will probably be out of it by the Wednesday. If Crist does go on to be VP, then the Lt Gov steps up to finish the term. I guess it is time to start doing a bit research on that guy, because other than meeting him a time or two, I have no idea what his politics are.

I like Charlie, even voted for Charlie, but the guy failed the bar exam twice. He is a natural politician but he is no big brained leader. I can't see him being the VP for a 71-year-old guy -- not at this stage of his career. If McCain wants to win he needs to pick a VP candidate with ... what's that formerly trendy word? Gravitas.

I agree. Crist has not even finished running a State yet. But during the last legislative session, Charlie got a bill passed that would allow someone to run for Federal office without having to resign. It was widely discussed that this particular legislation would allow the Governor to be a VP candidate without resigning his position. Before this bill that was not the case. There was some other language to allow the Chairman of the RPOF and the DPOF to remove individuals from party leadership if they felt that they were not performing or were causing damage to the party as a whole. But the part about allowing CC to run seemed to be the main focus.

I don't have any thoughts of a McCain/Crist ticket. I don't think McCain can win the GOP.

I know we are talking about McCain here...but am I the only one that thinks Romney acts like a gameshow host when he addresses an audience....I think he may do better at Bob Barkers job than George Bush's

The Republican Party really can't afford to push Crist into the national spotlight as V.P., especially in light of all the other high profile Republican males that have been pushed (or fell) "out of the closet" recently...although that would be another "first", along with Hillary and Barack.

Man if all of that turned out to be true what a ticket we would have to choose from this coming election. I remember growing up how my grandparents would lament how this country has changed. If they could only see it now.

Charlie's been seen dating a couple of hot age-appropriate women in the past year or so, so I'm not sure about this. It wouldn't surprise me, but his bachelorhood may have more to do with the fact that he's an odd bird. He doesn't own a house either, never has, and has spent his entire career in public service. His dad is his best friend and manages his finances for him. (His dad is a GREAT guy, he used to be my GP.) He seems to get laser focused on stuff.

In Charlie's case regarding VP, it's not so much that it matters what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom, but that the Republicans don't want do have to deal with even rumors of 'wide stance' again.
I get the feeling that the endorsement works out to more Crist getting a chance to poke at the RNC again by endorsing a candidate that Republican leadership doesn't seem overly fond of. A McCain/Crist ticket also doesn't make a lot of sense in that McCain would probably want someone more evangelical-friendly on the bottom of the ticket to make sure conservative Christians go out and vote instead of staying home.

Crist will be gone next term. This endorsing of McCain makes that certain.

Maybe we can get rid of Christ by voting for McCain/Christ.

Okay if that were to be done, does anyone know anything about Kottcamp?

What strategy did Crist use in waiting until after early voting in FL ended, before endorsing McCain?

That is a good question. Having his cake and eating it too perhaps? Now you can tell Rudy that I gave you all this time to get what you could, and tell McCain I am there for you, and tell Romney my endorsement does not really mean anything, you will be alright on Tuesday.
It really does not make a lot of sense to wait until a third of the votes have been cast if you are trying to help someone. I saw where Martinez endorsed McCain also. And the three of them did do a bus tour around the State together when Crist was running.
