One tornado has already touched down on the ground here in Memphis and another one is on the ground now. The first one hit no more than 5 miles from our house and this next one is coming the same direction. I am terrified. My husband is at work until 11:30 tonight and I am home here alone. This is another large one. We have been under a tornado warning since around 4:45. Back to the basement again for me. Later guys.

Minnie, the sirens just quit going off here within the past 5 minutes. We are not out of the woods yet. There is more coming that is over in Arkansas right now. Did you see the pictures of them on Channel 3 from the Hilton Memphis cam? Not to mention the camera phone pictures people took. I hate this kind of weather.
I have not heard from my husband in over an hour. He is at work. He works at Perkins and Old Lamar in a huge steel warehouse. I hope that area was not hit. I wish he would call.

LadyD, hope you all escape without personal harm or damage.
This is when my police scanner comes in handy. I hear the 911 calls, calls from police reporting the exact location of the storms, etc. I makes me feel a little better just having more info.
It seems like when bad storms happen here, it always happens when hubby is gone. So I'm scared to death all by myself.
Good luck, gull!

Thanks Beach Runner, my nerves are damaged.
It is very quiet here right now. Too quiet. What fueled all of this was the temps today. A high of 76. And a cold front clashed with it and that is bad news when that happens. It still is 68 degrees. Luckily our house was not damaged but 4 miles away the thing was on the ground. It was on the ground 2 to 3 minutes. We have trained weather spotters here. Still don't know if the second one touched down in that same area but it was headed in the same northeast direction. Will know more on the news in the morning. There was damage around different areas of Memphis though. And unfortunately, there is a tornado warning in Arkansas right now for Crittenden County which is separated only by the river from Memphis. Until around 8:15. That is heading our way also.

The funnest part is listening to the phone calls on the neighbors' portable phones, the conversations from their baby monitors, and cell phone conversations. That is, it's funn for my dog. I'd never do that.;-)

hmmmm......can't remember
Check in tomorrow morning, willya? Prayers for safety and at least a little bit of sleep tonight...(My family has slept through a ton of tornado warnings and near misses--it's only funny because we've never been hit.)

DANG! I just looked on the radar, and that nasty line of storms stretches from Detroit to Shreveport right now!
It's about to pass over Memphis and Dayton, OH, but then it will still have middle Tennessee and Kentucky--it looks really ugly between Louisville and Hopkinsville...
They're saying severe weather here tomorrow. The good news is that my classroom is underground...

Yep, we are getting wave #2. Sirens are going off right now. My lab keeps wanting to go get in the bathroom and jump in the tub. That is our safe spot for tornadoes.

I am watching the news coverage, our area is ok, for right now. I will go if need be.
8 confirmed dead in Arkansas and West TN. Union University in Jackson, TN damaged with students injured.
Local mall in Memphis with extensive damage, a wall at Sears collapsed. A small company in the same area had extensive damage, 14 trapped, 6 have been rescued. Power outage to over 25,000 in the area and National Guard is on the way to prevent looting.
Extensive damage to the industrial area near Ole Miss. Our phone has rang constantly with friends checking on our daughter and I reassured them she was safe at the beach.
I have checked on her former roommates, they saw the funnel cloud but the damage was not near them.
Thanks for the prayers. I am afraid we won't know the damage until morning.
I wish Seaside2 would check in, this is close to where he lives.

Hubby and I are ok. Hope everyone around Tennessee that is on here is ok. Round 3 did come last night around 10:00 p.m. Sirens starting blaring. We heard the loudest sound of wind and rain, went to the side door to open it and look out and the wind was so strong that we could hardly push the door open. That building Minnie mentioned south of the mall that was hit had at least two fatalities inside, the last we heard. I think one fatality in the mall also according to my husband. We lost power around 10:00 p.m., did not come back on until sometime in the morning, probably around 2:00 a.m.! It was a wild night. I am saying the same thing as Minnie, I won't know about any visible damage until I venture out to work this morning. I won't know if our work even has power until I get there. The tornado on the video on Channel 3 news, you could see sparks from the power lines as the tornado hit them.
Here is a link to a story on msnbc. The video link showing the tornado I am sure is the tornado here in Memphis. I recognize that area. Hope this link works.

I was watching that area closely to hear about Drew. He was heading towards Jackson for a youth leaders meeting. We haven't heard from him since around 7:00 and can't reach his cell. He probably let the battery go down again, so not too alarmed yet. But he better call soon or his sister and I are going to be nuts.

We are ok. 45 confirmed dead in 4 states in the MidSouth, 60 tornadoes throughout the area.
No damage estimate yet, as crews are just now able to start accessing damage, as we were hit after dark.
Union University in Jackson, TN. was hard hit and while students were trapped in dorms for hours miraclously no deaths there. The pictures from there are stunning.
The storms continue to move east so those in Chattanooga, Birmingham, Atlanta and even SoWal please be careful.
I think it has lost some of the deadliest strength but still a major storm.

Cheering, also all the circuits are over loaded, it took me hours to get my mother to let her know we were ok, in our area of Memphis.

I hope it has lost a lot of its strength. But if not, people please be careful and stay on the lookout. This stuff started right after I got home from work around 4:20 and did not let up until around 10:15 or 10:30 last night. And we had warning it was coming from yesterday morning early.

Everything is good at our place. Lil Seaside's schnauzer had a bad night of it. He, being the macho man that he is, is terrified of thunder/lightning/heavy rain/dense fog/anything else weather related (except sunshine).
'Twas a nasty night all over. Reminded me of the time a few years ago when similar weather hit on Thanksgiving weekend, blew down a bunch of houses in our neighborhood, killed a couple of people. Interstingly enough, one lot where the house blew down and the people were killed is still empty and for sale. Ms Seaside says it is haunted.

LadyD, Minnie & Seaside2...so relieved that you are all OK...I am saddened for those that perished. Nasty storms! I saw this last night while I was watching CNN...but I could not get my SoWal to work very well, so I could not post on this thread.
