What is up with people? When did our society change so that people could take their own misery out on others in such a violent way?

As mentioned in another thread recently; silly things...but worth committing murder over:idontno: very, very sad.....

Symptomatic of dealing with an unsympathetic faceless corporate and governmental bureacracy. Though murder is obviously not an appropriate outlet. Who hasn't wanted to wring a neck if the appropriate neck could only be identified. I only read the MO one.

We can thank our friends at the NRA.

I'm a gun collector, but won't join the NRA because it doesn't support safety or basic common sense. Seems to be run by a bunch of yahoos that think everyone should have a gun.

Everyone should NOT have a gun. On those responsible to respect their use.

Chipley Courthouse finally installed security. It took the shooting in the Atlanta Courthouse to make them realize it was necessary. Security at CourtHouses should be required.
It wouldn't hurt to post a security guard at city council meetings to check people for guns when they come in.

Our very own TDC may want to remove their rose colored glasses if they keep putting up Big Blue Signs. Of course those signs would make grayt targets for paint ball guns. I don't have one of those.....yet.

Very true DKA, I have no problem with people owning guns, I just feel that certain brain dead hicks should not be allowed near a locked one.

Remember that Gulf County was the reason that a lot of courthouses got security back in the 80's when a lawyer and judge were shot there.

I have some severe issues with the NRA and the many political candidates who have blinders when it comes to the 2nd amendment.

I grew up in a world where guns were commonplace, but strictly controlled with common sense. They were kept under lock and key (which was with my father whenever he left the house) and you were not allowed to use them w/o supervision and strict safety lessons. Didn't keep me from learning to shoot at age 10, my brother from shooting his first deer at the youngest age allowed, wild game off the table, or stuffed heads off the walls. My mother even once confiscated a couple guns from family friends who were divorcing to prevent any problems if their arguments escalated.

I've had some severe WTF moments/arguments since then whose ideas of gun safety were keeping a loaded weapon under their pillow or the true winner - under the car seat - even though he regularly had young kids in the same car!

No matter what people say, there is NO reason not to regulate guns. A true sportsman doesn't need an AK-47 to shoot game and most handguns have very few uses besides killing people. Anyone who needs a gun for a reasonable purpose can easily get one (providing they plan ahead a couple days and aren't a whack job) and if you REALLY want to build a gun collection in case of future guerilla warfare, you still can.

All these excessively lenient gun laws do is make it easy for nut jobs and criminals to get guns! :bang:

This stuff is getting really scary. I sit on the county code board and we have had some pretty upset people in front of us over the last year. One of the locals shows up on a pretty regular basis and has sent some very scary letters to the county commissioners and planning department staff. In the past I always defended him as harmless and thought the times that the deputies were present at our meetings a bit silly. But after these things happening, I do not know what to think.

If this sort of thing catches on, how in the world are you going to get citizens to step up and take on some of these issues today? I hate to be one of the people in the room without a gun. At least with one I am thinking I have a chance.

This is the OK Corral mentality that makes me crazy!

You think you are going to shoot someone, when in reality you are much more likely to shoot an innocent bystander!

How about instead of arming yourself you just hold your meetings in a location w/ a metal detector, enact gun control laws that screen people for mental issues and allow for cool down periods, or don't frustrate people to the point of them wanting to shoot you! :bang:

SB44,

Question: Do you think that a person should be able to have a handgun in their home for protection?? what about a car??? or a purse???

Hmmmm.....I guess those ideas could work also. But they have not done that at the south Walton courthouse yet. So I will just have to sit closer to the back door.

They do have that sort of screening in nowal. But the judges have said if you have a valid Florida Bar ID card you do not have to go through security. And employees do not have to go through security. And once they see you go in and out a bunch of times when you do set off the buzzer they do not make that big of a deal out of it. And you do not have to go through security to go into the tag office or property appraiser's office which both have doors that go into the area behind security. So it seems that these procedures are destined for failure.

I'm not sure if any of this is true, I know the sowal annex because I use it, but I've never been to the court house in Defuniak. I do know that someone who is intent on harming someone will do it 99% of the time. Most of the security measures in place are to stop/discourage someone who is just upset and would probably not do that sort of thing normally.

SB44,

Question: Do you think that a person should be able to have a handgun in their home for protection?? what about a car??? or a purse???

Personally I think that if you TRULY need a gun for protection you need to take a good hard look at your lifestyle choices/travel destinations!

Why do you need a gun? Because the other person has a gun? My solution is to take away the other person's gun, not continue escalation.

No, I don't have a problem w/ a responsible, sane, and trained person carrying a registered firearm. I DO have a problem with people thinking that more guns will prevent a shooting and that their panicked marksmanship will save the day. I also have a HUGE problem with people who improperly secure their guns so that kids can get to them.

As far as home defense, if you're going to shoot an intruder, a shotgun is the way to go IMO! ;-) Of course I'd advocate good locks, a large dog, and nosy neighbors first.

I'm not anti-guns, I'm anti-stupid trigger happy people with guns!

Yea, just ask Dick Cheney, who almost blew away one of his best friends. Fortunately, his hunting buddy made an almost full recovery. If he had been seriously maimed or even killed, I don't think any thing would have changed as far as stricter gun laws, unfortunately.

I thought that Whittington apologized for that incident.
