Poll: Raking Style

For those of you in Northern climes, it's leaf falling time! So what do you do with the tons of leaves that drop all over your yard and driveway?

Do you ignore them until the last one has fallen off the tree?

OR

Do you do a little bit each weekend so your yard looks neat and tidy all fall?

The fate of my driveway depends on your opinion! I can't get the enthusiasm up to start any raking, so I've decided to go with popular opinion. Until you all answer, I'm going with path #1....

Who rakes and who blows?

Oh, and one more thing. Who will still admit to jumping in a huge pile of leaves?

Oh definetly number 1. I can say that though because I live out in the country with no close neighbors, so nobody cares what my yard looks like. Thank goodness. And yes, when I was little I always loved to jump in a good pile of leave. I guess if I raked them now, I would still love it!!!

Our house doesn't have many mature trees (newer neighborhood) so we don't have to worry about it much. Our lake house has way too many trees so the raking and burning of leaves is a CHORE!!!! we usually do half in the fall and the rest in the spring when we open the house for the summer. It is a couple weekends of solid work!!!! but I kind of like it....I know, its weird

You're suppose to have leaves in your yard at least for a while. IT'S FALL! That's part of fall. :D

When we lived in a Delaware neighborhood years ago the little old man down the street would practically catch the leaves as they fell from his trees! It was a riot. You could look up & down the block and see this patch of green stand out amongst the other leaf-littered yards! :rolling: (I swear you'ld never see a leaf in his yard.)

We rake some, deposit some in flower beds, let some blow into neighbor's yard, and use the mulching mower over remaining ones.

Well, it being Colorado, we had three inches of snow last week, so a few branches dropped, but not that many leaves yet. Today it is 73 and sunny.
With any luck, the leaves will not drop until after we leave on the 20th.

I usually rake a bit here and there, try to keep things tidy.

Oh yes: there is a special place reserved in the 9th circle of Hell for all Leaf Blower Owners.

Ah yes, especially the ones who go out on Saturday morning and make a racket with their leaf blowers! They go way to the END of that 9th Circle. :bang:

"WHO BLOWS?"....I love you Mermaid...that is a serving on a silver platter! Monica L. comes to mind! I agree about those leaf blowers...can't they put a muffler on those things? Or maybe because of the situation we are in as an oil crazy nation, ban them and bring back the broom!!!!

Raking and mowing are pointless pursuits that should be eliminated completely. Don't we have enough to take care of INSIDE the house?

Kurt, I totally agree with you. INSIDE the house is where SoWal.com is! Let the leaves fall and the grass grow! :clap_1:

Leaves fall under the husband and kids department. I have them rake a couple of times to keep the yard looking nice. The kiddos love to jump in the leaves...I would but it bothers my allergies. If it were up to hubby, he would wait until the last leaf fell off the tree.

We live failry close to you Mermaid, in IL. Aren't the leaves beautiful now? I love to drive fast down the street and drive right thru the huge drifts by the curbs. That's more fun than jumping in a pile! It sacres my teenage son to death!

And yes, my husband rakes them pretty regularly, mows them sometimes, etc. He claims that it damages the grass if they're just left there. (He's kind of anal.)

:lolabove: That's our solution too! :floor:

And for the stray leaves that the mower misses, a good strong October breeze gently deposits them in the neighbor's yard

JOHNRUDY and you're a girl? I do apologize for calling you "John" in that Seaside post! I thought your screen name was your real name. Sorry!

That aside, how on earth do you know about the Panhandle? Everyone in the Midwest goes to Naples or Siesta Key or Sanibel, not 30-A. Had we not lived in Atlanta for 10 years prior to Indy, we'd probably be unaware of it too. I'm the only one in Indy driving around with a SoWal sticker planted on my car!

And yes, the leaves are so pretty now. I can't see the edge of my driveway but as I said, I can't get up the enthusiasm to rake quite yet.

No big deal about the gender confusion... I realized that when I chose that screen name to begin with. Those are the names of my 2 dogs: John and Rudy!

And yes, EVERYBODY up here always goes to Sanibel or Marco, etc. (We've been a few times and never quite saw the attraction and never wanted to return!) You see, I'm orignally from southern Ala. about 10 minutes from the FL state line. Growing up, we always went to P'cola Beach as a family, then I started switching over to So. Walton & Destin in my young adult years. Then my husband and I lived in Clearwater/St. Pete for 10 years, now we've been in the Chicago area for 10 years.

Sorry this is so long (and not particularly interesting) but the Panhandle beaches are the best beaches in the country, quite possibly in the world, no comparison. But then again, I'm partial. I start my day every morning checking out the Destincam.com to see the beautiful sand and sun, and end my day every night to see what beautiful pix Smiling JOe and Kurt have posted!

We live in Michigan and it's getting very beautiful with the changing colors of the leaves. Our favorite tree is across the street and it's wonderful to watch it change from green to a bright red every year.

We don't have a pattern for the leaves. It depends on how busy we are in the fall. Sometimes we rake little by little; sometimes we rake at the end of the season; a few years we've left them in the yard, but then we end up having to rake up the yecky lumps of dead black wet leaves in the spring when we'd rather be planting or taking care of the garden. Usually we leave some of the leaves on top of the flower gardens for the winter and then take them out in the summer. Either my husband or I will rake, but this year our older daughter is trying to earn money for a class trip so I think she'll be doing the raking. I'll probably help her because I like to think of the raking as good exercise. Never used a leaf blower.
