GOP amendment aimed at mocking Obama
While senators gravely speak about the nation's fiscal health all day during the Senate budget debate, they're not above making purely political points aimed at embarrassing one another.

To wit: Sen. Wayne Allard, a Republican from Colorado, has crafted a massive budget amendment that claims to fund every policy proposed by Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on the presidential campaign trail. Allard's amendment ? doomed to fail by a significant margin ? includes $1.4 trillion in spending over five years by proposing Obama's universal health care program ($65 billion a year), expanding the Army ($6.6 billion a year) and eliminating income taxes on lower income seniors ($10 billion a year).

This is an old Senate trick during budget season, where senators take campaign rhetoric and pump up the theoretical budget numbers behind the proposals then force a vote on the matter. The political impact on Obama is minimal, since the drudgery of the Senate budget debate is unlikely to create waves in the presidential campaign. And Obama has never promised to implement his dozens of domestic policy ideas all in one budget year, but that's not the point for Senate Republicans behind this maneuver.
Allard is a prime candidate to sponsor the amendment ? he is retiring from the Senate and there's no political cost to actually sponsoring $1.4 trillion in Democratic policy proposals.

Allard said his proposal was "an amendment that I think needs to be a part of the process ? that will budget for some of the rhetoric we are hearing on the campaign trail."

The only thing to watch with this proposal is to see if Obama actually votes in favor of it the way it has been packaged by Allard.

What impact do you think this will have on Obama? Of course most liberals haven't seen this yet and the ones who have continue to live in their crack-smoking, American hating world now don't they!

Yea, great "spritual advisor"

the article about Reverand Jeremiah Wright is very interesting, but...

Offensive to who? People who agree with Obama's preacher and his OFFENSIVE, RACIST and HATE filled words? It's the national news and its the truth. Apparantly many people on this board live in their own little world of denial.

reverend's outspoken and radical views are nothing new, so no, I'm not surprised or offended - it really doesn't effect me in the least. but sometimes a little truth hurts, no?

you need to lay off whatever it is you are smoking over there. perhaps a cup of latte' or hot jasmine tea will help clear your head and relax.:D no need to get all worked up over someone else's viewpoints about America. Unless you have experienced being black in this country, there is no way you can really relate or begin to understand his statements. I don't expect many will even try.

FYI-I have never used drugs nor do I walk around with blinders on. "Political correctness," and living in the liberal bubble (whatever is in there) is directly responsible for the morally deficient world we now reside in. Its sad that the men and women of our armed forces fight and die for people of THIS mentality everyday. Yea, keeping the peace by selling out is so admirable isn't it!

:rolling:now that is so over-the-top that it actually cracks me up! I guess I should feel saddened though. I remember a priest once who in his sermon pretty much said that the Dallas Cowboys could not win because God was not on their side - you know, 'cause their cheerleaders wore skimpy outfits. CiaoBella, I'm getting the sense of similar "logic" from you too.

Sorry, I don't believe for a second that Obama didn't know what that ***** ""Rev"" Wright was preaching .If your connected to a church you pretty much know the message your pastor is sending out even if you are in DC . I just bet his wife's brother attends that church. Hopefully since the preacher man is retiring,he'll move to a country he likes. Anybody that can listen to him and not be offended, oh please!

What are you talking about? Question Obama and his people not my beliefs. Apparantly you and Tootsie consider yourselves in the liberal-loving Obama supporters or you wouldn't be so defensive. It just amazes me that people like you guys are shocked at the most insignificant things in this life but when it comes to the next (I hope not!) US President and his "associates," anything is fine. Instead of attempting to slam me, you should listen to the words that came out of that pastor's mouth. If anything should offend you as a citizen of the country that certainly should. I can no longer waste valuable time responding to this, its clear that there is little intelligent life on this thread.

I'll bet he delivers a highly emotional and entertaining sermon. he's trying to make sense of a crazy mean hateful world. he's trying to make a difference. maybe he's truly angry, or he's trying to be heard. who knows. who cares?

but I do care that people will try to attach meaning from the reverend's words to Obama. they are 2 separate people. come on. how can anyone hold me accountable for my priests words from several years ago?

what, they can't find anything better? if they want to smear obama about something, they need to smear him for something he is directly responsible for doing or saying. they are going to have to do much better than digging up a retired pastor.

I think we ALL should CARE as "Rev" Wright is Obama's spiritual adviser and Obama is pretty much our next leader. How could you not care/Wake up.
I really bite my fingers trying not to type on these type threads ,but sometime i have to say something.

care about what exactly? what I do care about is how people use such BS reports to get angry over and use as a weapon against a good man who is running for president. you don't have to like him or vote for him. you should be honest with yourself, however. you should face what it is about Obama that makes you accept such reports as a reflection of his character. what about his character do you suspect?

it's like this: what do people hope to gain by continuing to forward the Obama is a Muslim email slander, even when they know its totally false? what is the root of this kind of behavior?

Obama knows how to rise above this kind of gutter tactic. lord knows how he does it. he'll do it this time too.

I listened only to the TV bits, over and over , and I was not at all impressed. I would think he could become a nightmare for Obama. :(

Obama has shown himself to be above this type of rhetoric and should distance himself for the good of his campaign. Just my opinion.

ciaobella, you asked what impact the amendment to the bill will have on Obama, and I say it will have zero effect. Most people will not even know it happened. It is just a tool to poke fun at the Dem's high spending plans, which is rather ironic, given the ludicrous spending I've seen by both parties. I agree with the writer of the article, seeing how Obama votes on this amendment might be interesting, if he actually votes. I don't think he's voted for or against anything since he decided to run for President. Hell, the whole country is so focused on which yahoo is next in line, that all the politicians, including Bush, are getting a free ride until the next President takes office in 2009.

How do you suggest he distance himself from his spiritual adviser of twenty-five years, the man who married Mr and Mrs Obama, Baptized his kids, pulled Obama into Christianity, gave him the title for one of Obama's books, etc? That will be a tough one.

Agree or disagree with the politically-vocal priest, I find him to be an interesting cat, but couldn't listen to him for twenty five years. A couple of points, his church's tax exempt status sounds like it could be in jeopardy for some of the things he has said in "church." He made it sound that Obama grew up poor, and from what I read, that is far from the truth. On the twist side of things, I think a couple of things he said are spot on, regarding the US blowing up so many other countries and killing so many other people, and then we wonder why they are attacking us on our on soil. There are plenty of other Christian countries in the world, yet the radical Muslims chose America to target. I don't think that portion of what he said is anything other than an observation. sj - american's won't even look inside themselves to see what is there. how could they look at their own country without bias, and with clear vision, to see what is really inside the soul of that country, what has happened in all of its domestic and foreign line of history, and how it may have affected big groups of people both inside and outside its boundaries. and how we do bring about serious consequences by our own actions. no, we cannot look.

the sheer audacity of an angry african american reverend to force us to look. we won't!

I think the reverend is entitled to his views, just like the next person. but it doesn't mean that Obama is represented by those views. he's been working as a servant of the people for a long time. I believe he has had quite enough experience in the world to form his own views, which he has shared in great detail for the last 2 years when he first started his campaign.

the pastor does not speak for him.

In any way he can think of! for "political" purposes and the campaign his politically-vocal pastor is not likely to win over the masses .... right or wrong.

I saw a segment on this and it would appear that over the years the "tax men" have turned their heads with a lot of the politics-in-church over the years. My opinion is that it doesn't belong there and I don't want my church preaching politics to me. To each his own in that respect I suppose.

And he did distance himself. I didn't always agree with the minister of my former church, just like Obama has said that he doesn't agree with everything preached by his minister. Read and watch the news. Or watch FOX and get "fair and balanced."

Tootsie, I'm not a racist. As I stated before, I couldn't have taugh 5th grade Math and Science in a school with a black principal and 98% black population for 10 years if I was a racist. I might add that no parents, students,or my principal ever looked at me as being a racist.
Again, I think it's important to know who our possibly next president has advising him. Obama has said that this man is his spiritual adviser. And one thing is very clear the "REv" is very much a racist.
Obama is suppose to be about moving forward and about unity, not hate.
goodnight....

so funny how the news about the Reverend is just hitting the national news channels while we've already had this general discussion months ago. we didn't have the all the detail, but we did have the gist of the pastor's leanings. enough to debate on the board whether it reflected on Obama or not.

Fear. plain and simple. Fear of Obama winning the presidency is making some people desperate. I remember having this fear of Dubya, but not desperately fearful, because I didn't think there was any way in hail he would win it the first time, then certainly he wouldn't win the second time. I should have been desperately afraid then but didn't know it. :bang: also, my fear was not race based. it was genuine fear of what might happen to our country. and it all came to pass and more. white man. small brain. that is cause for real fear, imo.

I am happy to say that I do not have this fear of any of the candidates this time around. thank God for this blessing. I am really grateful to them all.. my goodness at the work and personal sacrifice they are each making. they are each worthy candidates for different reasons.
