Okay, so the movers come tomorrow and the next day.

I will be packing up a backpack for the trip down, and a suitcase to live out of for two months while we look for a place to live (we have a place to stay for those two months.)

I am uncertain of what to bring in terms of warm clothing. I am bringing my nice long coat.
Also, I have
sweaters and gloves and turtlenecks, but would like to give away some of them if I will not be wearing them for more than a couple months, say, January and February.
I mean, I have a lot of sweaters and boots and stuff, should I ditch the Uggs? What about the down vest? Keep it? Just not sure how much to bring.
Much thanks in advance.

I had a great sweater collection before moving down - you won't need many at all - keep the favorites.

The down vest will be good as it can really get cold here expecially with the wind coming off the water. This does not happen often.

A coat might be nice at night if you go outside - the gloves and boots, you might can do without.

My advice would be to bring your favorites and what you don't use after the first winter here, get rid of it.

My theory - I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

The dress is so casual down here, you can wear jeans most anywhere - people wear shorts & jeans to church - down here, almost anything goes!!!

Welcome - it truly is paradise here!!! I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather live!!!

Keep what you truly love to wear...give away the rest. Happy Moving to you and your family!

You might want to keep a set of winter outdoor clothes in case you decide to travel north in the winter sometime for a holiday or something. By the way, lucky you to be moving to SoWal for good...

If you're planning on looking for an office job somewhere down the line, don't throw out the sweaters just yet. Many businesses in Florida operate on a principal of "we've got air conditioning so darn skippy, we're going to use it." During the summer I go to work wearing an oversized blazer over a sweater because they set the AC to a toasty 65F.

I'd keep one nice neutral-colored pair of gloves. Winter overnight lows can be in the low 30s and very occasionally the high 20s, even along the coast, and gloves are nice to have.

KEEP the Uggs! They work with anything! IMO :rolling: I'm a size 8 but can wear a size 7 or 9, if you want to get rid of them. :D

I guess I will bring the Uggs; it just seems like they don't work that well in wet weather, they are better in our dry powdery snow. They are a size 8 and if we ever meet you can have them.

Thank you so much, ladies. I haven't made an out of state move since age 21 and this is surreal. I will bring my favorites and give the others to charity.
No doubt we will be back in Colorado on occasion but I am hoping that it will only be during the summer or fall. ;-)

Tell us again, where you've decided to settle in the panhandle? If I remember correctly, you have a son who's in highschool? How is that going?
(BTW, don't let my screen name fool you - - I'm a lady too. Not to mention, a very envious lady who wishes she was moving down there too!))

Cil,
Congratulations for taking action and making the "choice" to move. I must say, that the past two nights have been burrrh cold. Only about 60F degrees, but I have been wrapped up. You probably will not get cold right away, but next year, you may be surprised at how cold 60F can really feel on your skin. As someone else mentioned, you probably will not have too many occasions for gloves, although I keep a pair, but you will have need for a warm hat, and a windproof jacket for evenings at the beach. I still have an overcoat, but that is for winter travel elsewhere. I have never worn it in FL.

I like, and use, Seagrover's advice, "My advice would be to bring your favorites and what you don't use after the first winter here, get rid of it."
I use this concept all the time. When I have not worn something for a year, I will ditch it. Sometimes I really want to keep something that I have not worn so I will make myself wear it so that I can keep it around. :D

Oh man SJ....I ran out this morning around 5 am with Molly in shorts and a t-shirt...BRRRR!! Of course, Molly had her fur with her and wanted to run everywhere...we made a deal....run a bit and then let mommy go get her sweatshirt! These are the days of "extremes" in temp!! It will warm up nicely later. The weather has been glorious the entire month so far...DUH!

We are moving to Port St Joe.
Yes, 60 sounds fine to me, but I am sure the humidity might make it cooler.
Thanks again!

Cil,
Hope your move goes swell. We moved here 5 years ago after 13 years in Chicago. Since then my wife has never worn her fur, or boots, or gloves. Light jackets and sweaters are about it. If you pack a bunch of warm winter clothes just to be safe, you will find them sometime in the future. You'll probably salvage an item or two, then, like most of us, probably donate the rest or put the stuff back up in the attic.

Good luck.

I took my "girls" out at 5:15 this morning to a chilly, no really cold, 36 degrees. Too early for me to be that cool.

Well, maybe I have too much warm stuff. But 36 sounds chilly.
The packers came and it is so echoey here now.
They come again tomorrow, then load up Wednesday.

Wow, Mack, 13 years in Chicago? Must feel balmy in SoWal.

The modem goes back to Comcast tomorrow, so I guess the next time I come around here it will be either on the way down with spouse's laptop, or when we get wired up in PSJ.

Thanks everyone!
