What is up with all of the Governors coming out in public saying that they cheated on their spouse, that both the Gov and his wife cheated on each other, coming out of the closet saying that they are gay, saying that they had three ways with the wife and the limo driver? I just don't get it.

Many of you will think I am crazy but I DO NOT CARE what a public official or any of you for that matter do with your private lives AS LONG AS THERE ARE NO VICTIMS AND NO LAWS ARE BROKEN (and obviously Spitzer broke many) - but it is quite hard to legislate morality -it is just too personal.
agreed, let them do what they do. on the other hand, one's leadership ability could be questioned by looking into past performance.
it just seems to be a prerequisite that politicos have some skeletons... sad.
Chickpea, I basically agree with you, but I still don't understand why so many are coming out of the closet on this issue, having press releases about it. I say, "basically," because there is that part of me that thinks that cheating on spouses is dishonest and disloyal, and if they will cheat on someone they've pledged to love the remainder of their lives, why should we expect them not to screw us over, too?

They really have a history of "screwing the public" whether they have cheated on a spouse or not. Seems that those who are not currently not identified as "cheaters" have the worst track record.

Ahhhhh...finally someone has put this into a context that makes me understand why I should care. You are right on this SJ. Never thought of it that way. Now if the spouse was okay with the shenanigans that is one thing, but if it was a secret affair, then we should care because of the statement it makes about moral character.
Yes, GOP, not all of the ones who are coming out claim that they "cheated." The one in New Jersey who came out of the closet a while back, saying that he is gay, recently claimed that he, his wife, and the limo driver had a little thing going on, all consenting. (note that his wife, or is it exwife, denies the three-some.

I think one of the main reasons why so many people are coming out now is that with the press gunning for such juicy tidbits they would rather salvage their political careers by admitting to an indiscretion or two or three while the limelight is on the more prominent figures and avoid that dreaded AHA moment when they are caught and are forced to defend themselves and come across as hypocritical, defensive and pathetic.
Cheating on your spouse is disloyal and dishonest in most cases but there are some who may have "arrangements" with their spouses and my ONLY point is that one may, for a multitude of reasons, have sexual indiscretions but still be absolutely capable of being moral in other aspects of their lives, including those to serve the public good. Obviously, many are not capable of that and lie and cheat their way through BUT to condemn a person solely on those grounds or to draw such a firm line in the sand to me comes across a tad too judgmental.
I am no different than any of you - I know plently of people who have had affairs (some deceitful and others more openly) and realize that the personal circumstances in their lives led them (astray??) but that many of these people would make fine public officials. I know this point is nuanced and not applicable in many cases but I stand firm on my belief that IF there are no victims in a sexual scandal and if no laws are broken - it is NOBODY's business.
That is an interesting analysis of why they are coming out of the woodworks, now. Makes sense to me. It's also somewhat like Hot-Potato, where the news story will quickly get tossed to the next person, with their stories, taking a backseat to the Presidential race.

Exactly!!! With the focus on Spitzer and the new Governor (all the more prominent ones) who will care about a lesser politician's indiscretion....
