Well tomorrow is Good Friday. Do you know that it is also Purim, a celebration of the Jews avoiding some sort of catastrophe (I am vague on the details), a day they mark with plenty of gusto? According to Time magazine, there are six religious holidays or festivals tomorrow, a once-in-a-millenium occurrence. I found this fascinating, especially the dichotomy between the somber Good Friday and the happy Purim celebrations. But tomorrow also has something in it for various Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists.

My parents are going to the Stations of the Cross tomorrow. We're going to Mass on Saturday, the candlelight service, which is very beautiful...and excrutiatingly long as well, seeing that about two dozen people are converting with full pomp and circumstance. This evening calls for Christian fortitude.

Thanks for posting this! This year is a bit out of the ordinary, but I didn't even notice that Purim and Good Friday were on the same day, much less the other religious holidays. That's pretty awesome.
Purim has to do with Ester and the miraculous victory over Haman. I don't know the typical celebration of it, but have friends & family in West Palm that are at a Purim party. (The next day starts at sunset in the Hebrew calendar, i.e. Shabbat starts on Friday at sunset until Saturday at sunset.)
Loved the article. Will be meditating on the same thing mentioned at the end of it. Thanks again!

My middle child attends a wonderful reform Jewish preschool, which serves the community at large and not just the Jewish families. They do a yearly Purim parade with costumes, a play, a special snack, etc. We are Episcopalians and I was just thinking about how odd it is that I will be watching the parade when I should probably be spending time being reflective. I too liked this article and the attitude of the writer, and all of the scholars quoted in it.

Good luck.
My oldest was baptized on Easter ... what a special day. No full Mass though. We are Catholic light. SWGB
Full Mass isn't so bad, the worst part is the insense.

The story of Esther and how she saved the Jews then became Queen is one of my favorites in the bible. Good Friday is a whole day....plenty of time for celebration and reflection.

Agree! My son is getting way better of an Old Testament education than I ever had. I will have to read about Queen Esther, or maybe I'll just ask my son, since he seems to know all about it.

You must. I like reading it in The Message- the bible written in contemporary language. It's more like a story.
I forgot to say that I thought it was really cool that your son can take part in this celebration. My son is in a 5th grade boys sunday school class right now that covers all the old testament. Dylan loves going and is in awe of his teacher. Whenever he asks me a biblical question and I can't answer it he says nevermind, I'll ask Mr. Hank.
