I can't figure out how to size photos small enough to be used as avatars or attached as thumbnails. Could some patient soul help me? You can PM me if you want to instead of boring all the savvy users! Thanks in advance.

If you go to Windows Explorer and double-click on the photo, the default software associated with that type of file (in my case, it's Windows Office Picture Manager because I haven't gotten around to changing all of the associations between file types and software). In Windows Office Picture Manager, do a "save as" to save a copy of the photo with a different name. Then use the Edit Pictures option, Change Picture Size option, then Resize, and change it to avatar size. Save this, and the original file name contains the smaller version. Seems counterintuitive.

If your file type is associated with a different piece of software, I'd have to know what it is (and have that software) to explain how to resize the photo.

If you'd like to resize your photos on your computer, here is a link to the world's easiest picture resizer by Microsoft. Click on it, then select run, and it will install. Once installed, all you have to do is right click on any pic file on your computer, select "Resize Pictures" and it will give you several size options - it's that easy!

That's a good size for e-mailing or posting photos. Avatars have to be less than 200px so i guess that program won't work.

For avatars, you may have a max size of 200x200. If you have any other photo program, even one that came with your camera, you can probably pull down the edit menu, and find something regarding, "image size," which will allow you to adjust the size to any size you want. if the photo is not already a perfect square, just change the longest length to 200, and the other side should adjust accordingly as to not skew the image. If you started with a very large photo, you may want to "sharpen" the image when reducing that small. You can probably find that button under the "enhance" or "effect" menus.

Skip--there should be a button that says "Advanced" in the resize box. Click on that, and you can customize the size to 200 x 200. Hope that helps; I just figured that one out myself! :clap_1:

Also, when resizing a .jpg image, it's better to resize in increments rather than in one step, due to the compression algorithm used for jpegs. In other words, don't go directly from a 2272 by 1704 photo to 200 by whatever. Take it in incremental steps. My rule-of-thumb is resizing to 1800 by whatever (preserving the aspect ratio, of course, which is why I say "whatever"), to 1400 by whatever, to 1000 by whatever, to 600 by whatever, to 200 by whatever. The final quality of the image will be much better. I will refrain from explaining the mathematical reason why that's true. It's on the 'Net.

Peapod....Congrats! Are those your PRECIOUS children? I LOVE YOUR AVATAR!

Speaking of avatars...I have pleaded in the past for SJ and even RO to get me an avatar. I will take anything! Actually, I am hoping SJ will get a pic of Molly on the beach at sunset...that would make Sueshore a happy gull! When's the next chance, SJ?

If you have no image editing software on your computer, you can go to www.gimp.org and download the open source software for Windows/Mac/Unix. It has most of the functionality of PhotoShop, from what I've heard, and it's free.

Groovy man! Is that a cute pup or what? Go for it...especially if you can get more of the Molly bottom up in the air! I have been feeling like a sea hag or should I say...sea NAG...the last few days. You are my hero.

BTW....is that your bar code under your name?

From my daughter's dorm room at MIT. That's the Charles River in the background. The pumpkin was bought at a pumpkin patch art show that's held every fall at MIT. They're all blown-glass pumpkins and sell for from about $50 up to (I believe she said) $1000. They come in unusual colors. Attached is a blue one she bought herself. They're true works of art. According to my daughter, people stampede when the show opens to buy them for Christmas gifts.

Very cool glass pumpkins but I think I like the traditional orange. We were at Kroger the other day and they had white pumpkins. My son said Bunnicula must have gotten to them.
