Microsoft Vista

I just got a new desktop computer for business applications. I had heard mixed reactions about Vista, so when I ordered the computers I wanted XP but the seller told me that MS would be discontinuing updates of XP next June.
So, I started setting the computer and I was so excited, yeah, a big screen cause I am going blind, a big bass boombox thing almost as large as my computer with wee little speakers, and can be heard down the street, because I am going deaf too, a pretty screen pops up with this beautiful circulating photos.
I'm in heaven.

Then..........Windows Defender.
I need to know how to kill this thing. As I was installing programs, constant pop ups. Was I allowed to install the program? Duh, the Windows Defender is stupid because I just delivered the baby. Installed another program that froze up and I had to turn the computer off. Turned it back on and the Windows Defender said that some start programs were blocked. Maybe because I haven't hooked it up to the internet yet?

I haven't had the time yet to mess with it all yet, but I think I may have to buy a cape and kill it.

Neither the major corporation for which my husband works nor the college at which I am a professor have adopted Vista.

I am computer illiterate but I've heard Merman mumble many a time about Bill Gates and Microsoft. So you have my sympathies!

I like the macs as well. I use xp at home and a mac in the office.
And everyone I know hate Vista as well.

PS. You should be able to turn defender off. As long as you are loading software you have it shouldn't be an issue because you won't have any viruses in it.

Yes, all I did was google Vista last night and read about all the schools in the UK that won't buy it. MS finally got all the patches and holes worked out of XP, then they go and make this disaster called Vista. Of course, XP Service Pack 1 didn't start off much better and everyone complained about that. The techy geeks said for my applications the speed would be helpful, internet etc. and so would the added security features which is crucial in my business. So the fact that XP would be discontinued and leave me open to any security intrusions made me make my decision.
But, I'm thinking I should have investigated MACs first.
I guess I'll give it a shot and actually read the tuturial, talk to IT and see what the deal is.

I've never even seen the screens on them, but I learn quickly.

I just got a new laptop for college, and I love the computer itself, but I DISPISE Vista. It's so confusing. I like to think I'm a bit computer savvy, but this stupid program makes me doubt myself. :idontno:

Unless you are my mom, who had extensive problems with a mac, and no one at mac seemed to give a hoot. I bought her a pc laptop so that she wouldn't have to be so frustrated anymore, and she loves the pc, and takes it everywhere.

Dear, we could be the caped crusaders. Let's kill it.
Did they give you a choice of operating systems? Maybe you can take it back and have it changed to XP?

Wow! The first one I have ever heard of. They probably didn't know how to help her. They closed that department!

Yes and no. If you ask the average geek yes they are. However, if you ask a lawyer then the answer is no.

This goes way back to the 90's. That's when Apple sued Microsoft over the visual interface. Microsoft had way more money and lawyers and made arguments that the menu bar was on the bottom of the screen, it wasn't a trash can it was a recycle bin, etc. Long story short Microsoft won and Apple went off to develop must have gadgets. That being said, Mac's are the bomb. They are simple to use, incredibly hard to hack, and all around idiot proof.

SJ, I'll save you the argument, I watched the G4 TV show that put up a Vista box vs. a Mac. They then gave out the IP address for each box and said have at it. The Vista machine went down in seconds. The Mac was still going strong 2 days later.

Back in the day Mac's were relegated to the "artsy" folk who needed powerful image, video, and sound manipulation. However almost any business software can be found on the Mac platform as well.

My moms Mac has been sitting quietly, untouched since I bought her the pc. I thought about asking her to let me take it to my house to get it out of her way.

We have had one go down at the office and it was a pain but they found someone to work on it and now it is fine. Changing browsers was the best thing I ever did on my home computer.

One reason the macs aren't hacked more often has nothing to do with their security. It has to do with hackers wanting to do the greatest amount of damage. Since there are many more windows-based computers, that is what hackers want to target, so windows and IE is what they study. That is also the reason why Mozilla Firefox browser is superior to IE -- less people use Firefox, so the hackers don't mess with trying to figure it out as much. If you don't want to give up your pc, but want to stop pop ups and better your basic security, the first thing you should do is direct your browser to Mozilla.com and download the free Firefox browser, and begin using it today, never touching IE again, unless someone points a gun at your head requesting that you do so.

I understand where you are going with your argument, but you are speaking of viruses, or at least that is the angle I'm getting from it.

Macs are harder to hack due to the underlying OS which is Unix.

Windows uses a database driven OS that is horribly prone to viruses and even basic hacks such as macros.

Go ahead and search for hacking a mac on google, it's either a contest that took hackers days to win or just cute ways to customize your mac book. I've worked for large companies that were victims of browserless (not related to an internet browser such as I.E. or Firefox) viruses. Every PC in the building would go down, but the Mac users were happily (not really they still had to work while we sat around) continuing to work as their OS's were unaffected.
