I have dogs groomed once a month, but bathe them weekly myself. Any good dog shampoo ideas? I have been using something for mt dog's itchy skin, but am not crazy about it.

My vet recommended Malaseb..bought it at the vet's office for my itchy dogs. It has helped. My dogs are on Centinal for fleas and heartworm, but fleas still get on them, bite, then die. Also use CapStar to kill fleas. Fleas are the main culprit for itchy dogs. They are usually allergic to them and itch for days after getting bitten. If your dog goes anywhere outside, they will find fleas...this is Florida...flea capital. Also, try head and shoulders shampoo. After a couple of washings you may see a difference. Good luck!

can I ask why you bathe them every week? this can be very drying to your dogs skin & can compromise the skin barrier making it more prone to infection & itching.

Epi-Soothe at the Vet, is very good. I agree, unless the dogs are getting into something that makes them stink or really, really dirty, once a week is probably part of the problem.

A very good brushing daily and less bathing is probably all that is needed.

The oldest has always chewed due to stress anxiety...yes they are high maintence. Because of this, she smells really bad and I cannot stand stinking dogs in the house, on the furniture, in my bed. The younger gets bathed every two weeks. They are brushed regularly as Bichons mat quickly.

Your dogs don't shed, do they? My little John was a poodle mix and he didn't shed either but because of that he WAS a stinky dog! I feel shedders at least smell better. Your vet should be able to recommend or even sell some type of shampoo.

I have a doubled coated (shedder) and I also have a Standard poodle as well who doesn't shed. For the the one that chews out of stress, I would try something to calm her down a bit, "Plush Puppy" makes a "Calming" drop, as well as your vet could probably recommend something.

1st I would find out What the Groomer bathes them in, and do not allow them to place any kind of Flea dip on them.... Dries their skin out.
Any sores or spots, I would go to the Health food store and get "Tea Tree" oil. It usually comes in a very small tiny bottle as is pretty expensive. Dab the spots, with it, it will sting a little so don't over do it. Bathing weekly is definately drying out their skin. Most breeds should only be bathed monthly, if that much. but even at that while at the Health food store pick up some Shampoo with the largest amount of "Tea Tree" oil in it. between the oil and the shampoo, it will soothe the skin and help them feel better, takes the smells away as well. If they are normally smelly, talk to the vet about their "Glands" there are some breeds that have issues with their glads filling and causeing the oder, they will clean them for you if you are unable to do so. ....

But remove any fleas prior to doing this, capstar is awesome for a one shot removal of an infestation, then Bathe and dry and use the oil to dab sores. then after 5 days from Capstar follow up with Advantix, or Frontline or what ever else you want to use. IF this doesn't help...... they may actually just have allergies. Discuss with your vet the possibilities. 80% of the time.....It's food allergies that cause itching, if it's not fleas. So discuss with your vet food allergies, or other allergies.

hope this helps! Tea Tree oil is Awesome! for the skin.... As well as...Salt Water! Take them to the beach allot! BUT Bathing weekly.......Not healthy for the skin at all.
