Has anybody done the holiday tour of the Biltmore house? Someone mentioned that to me today and I checked the website and it looked really good. That would be the only thing to give SoWal some competition as a possible anniversary trip.....

It is great. My in-laws live in Asheville so we've done it a couple of times. If you want to do the candlelight tour you need to check now. It gets booked really quickly! There are plenty of good bed and breakfast inns located in and around the area. Also, the Grove Park Inn is really nice. Even if you don't stay you can have lunch, have a drink and tour the inn and see all the Gingerbread Houses, they have a huge national competition there. They are works of ART! They even have a children's category. Those kids put any attempt I've made to shame!

Hands down, I'd pick SoWal any day. But, it's always good to broaden your horizions.

What she said. I am heading up that way next week and may run through the grounds. The decor is great, and cool to see, esp if you do the candlelight tour, but it does not change much year to year. The grounds of B.E. are the best, and when I go up next week, I may go myself. I still have my namebadge which gets me in free of charge until they change them. :D

The Biltmore Estate is America's most beautiful home and the holiday decorations are over-the-top. Be sure to take the tour so you don't miss seeing the old-fashioned gymnasium and pool in the basement. A good side trip around holiday time is over to Highlands, NC. There are lovely shops there and the best prices on handmade quilts. Booneville is also fun and a very quaint little mountain town. Pick up a country ham while you're "in them parts."

On second thought, scrap Biltmore and spend the day getting pampered in the Spa at Grove Park. I could spend all day in the pools, contrast tubs, sauna, lounge, etc. Yummy!

Ditto what everyone else said. The Biltmore is beyond incredible. The grounds (Olmsted designed) are breathtaking. I have never been there in late fall, but I'm sure the gardens are spectacular year round in different ways. My son loved the place- pretended like he was at Harry Potter's Hogwarts the whole time. The fun is walking around imagining what it was like to live there in "the day".

Have we convinced you yet? I'm ready to go! But I won't be in NC 'til next summer, so you go (and SJ too) and take pics!

SJ and Donna- The Grove park Inn is on the short list!

BTW- I know I may not seem like a reliable Biltmore resource by the looks of my avatar, but that little house is as much of a gem as the Biltmore.

I've had dinner at the Biltmore. I think the main house was used in the movie "Being There". The movie and the Biltmore are worth seeing.

Not sure about Being There, but plenty of other films have been shot at BE.

Now why would anyone want to hold a candle to Graceland? We don't want to burn it to the ground. :funn:

The Biltmore Estate was also the setting for the movie "Richie Rich." I took my mother there while they were shooting. I don't recommend visiting when they are filming, however. On that trip (autumn), it was frantic and cluttered. Plus, the movie people were quite rude to the visitors (paying).

You should have heard the screams when they were shooting the part of Hannibal when the fed the people to the Russian Boar. People were not told of the shooting location, and when they left the winery, they heard these terrifying screams. It was a little sickening.

No excuse for rudeness, but the movie peeps pay to shoot at Biltmore too.
