Permit me to whine about my gift certificate

I've warned you; this is going to be a rant! But I wouldn't mind opinions.

Merman and I were given a gift certificate for $50 for a very nice restaurant downtown. Yesterday's mail brought the Menu Guide from Indianapolis Monthly mag, and I looked up the menu for this restaurant. Our $50 doesn't go very far.

Starters: mixed green with sherry balsamic vinaigrette $6.75
Entree: Grilled beef madallions with fingerling potatoes, cippolini onions, yadda yadda yadda $21.00

Let's figure in a decent bottle of wine. Maybe about $25, at least? And a cup of coffee, $3, at least? And dessert, too, for about $6.75?

Add it all up and include tip and our bill is over $100. Our gift certificate covers only half.

Call me a grump of monumental proportions, but what kind of present is this that costs ME money? I know we'd be eating in fine syle for half the price, but what if I would really prefer a gift certificate that requires nothing from my wallet but a tip for good service?

So what's your take on this? Do you like gift certificates that allow you to go for luxury for less or are you grumpy like me (okay okay, call me a Scrooge)?

this is why i think we should just buy presents for the kids - how would you like to be a plus-size woman, and receive a gift card from a place that doesn't even remotely have plus-sized clothes ? there are cheaper ways for people to tell me i am too fat !

Yes, I'm thinking the earlier suggestion of movie gift certificates is the absolute safest way to make someone happy. I love going to movies and don't go to as many as I want to.

I will! :clap_1: I told my husband last week this is going to be such an easy trip to pack for--don't have to take any work or going-out clothes, don't have to agonize over which swimsuits are the most flattering...ah, bliss! And the best news of all is, we just got our laptop last week, so I can send dispatches!

I wonder how many laptops have been sold so SoWallers can stay plugged in while IN SOWAL! Maybe Kurt should get a cut? :funn:

Question....would you have rathered cash instead of the gift certificate??? Nah...didn't think so. However, don't kids prefer cash to gc's??? I am always fearful that they will get lost or go forgotten.

I think my kiddos prefer giftcards to money. They love to receive a giftcard to spend at their favorite stores. My 12-year-old son likes them so much he initially informed everyone that this year he wanted only giftcards for Christmas, then changed his mind when he realized he'd miss out on all the present opening!

Yeah, not much fun to play with on Christmas morning. My kids love them too. They think it's their own credit card.

I thought it was so cute when my son changed his mind, though. It was like he realized his idea was good in concept, but the thought of the reality of it made him say, "Now waaaaaait a minute!"
