Y'all are such great gift givers that I'm turning to you for help once again! I want to get some special things for my 13 and 8 yr old nieces-- but I'm feeling so out of touch with what kids like today. The 8 yr old is artsy and likes to write poetry, the 13 yr old doesnt have many specialized interests--mainly chatting with friends, just a real sweet girl. I usually give the younger one art supplies, journals, etc., and the older one gets books, clothes, etc. Any of you with kids know the hot-list items for girls this Christmas?

PS--Thanks SJ for the Netflix suggestion. That was perfect!

Katie, I have a 9-year-old daughter, and the first 2 gifts she asked for were Pixel Chix and the Dream Life game. I bought them immediately, so not sure if you can easily find them or not, sorry. I do know someone on the board mentioned last week that Dream Life was hard to find at the moment...? I know, too, there is a cool new journal that is electronic in some way--it's voice-activated or something, like will only open to the sound of the owner's voice, I think. Try looking under "journal" on Amazon. I'll write more later after I get my girl to give me some more ideas, if you want!

My wife just got our 9 year old niece a bunch of stuff to make beaded jewlery with. She got her several little pairs of pliers and one of those blue boxes with little drawers for screws and stuff. She bought a ton of beads and wire and everything she needed. She'll have fun organizing all her beads and tools.

Also, if you can find a cool looking jewelry box; satin and beaded, etc. They might even keep those around all thru highschool.

My niece just turned 13. I am giving her a sweater from American Eagle, which is her favorite store, and an iTunes gift card.

Great suggestions so far. Pink Sugar cologne from Sephora is popular choice for teens. My dd's big thing this year is the ipod and I've had fun buying accessories for it. I found the cutest silve sequin bag that matches her purse. I think it was for a cell phone but it'll work for an ipod too.

We have an 11 year old and 13 year old girl. They love craft kits -- such as making beaded bracelets, making cards, making candles, making soaps (probably safer than making candles and doesn't require as much parental supervision). there are craft kids that include shells as well. You can get these at Michaels or other craft stores. They also like things from Claires (jewelry and other bling-type things for young girls). I think clothes are tough because they have such clear ideas about what they want to wear by this age and some clothes people gave them never got worn. Hope this helps.

If you are looking for something special, a piece of "real" jewelry would be great. Maybe a necklace with their birthstone or a pair of earrings. If you are nearby and can stand it, a day out with you including lunch and a trip to a clothing store would be fun. I like the idea of "experiences" as gifts.

I was just at Pier 1 and they had great jewelry boxes in all sizes. Really cool colors, like turquoise velvet with beads, hot orange satin. Some were small enough to hold a couple of rings or some were bigger. The bigger ones ran about $15.
