and this is an area I have NO experience with. So...and please ask your teen kids to chime in...

What site do you use? Per-song fee, or membership?

Typical download time for high-speed? For dial-up? (We currently have dial-up but will be switching to a wireless provider soon.) :bang:

Things that Mom should know when Jr. is in here downloading? :idontno:

I won't be able to check the board until tomorrow...but any help the SoWal gang could give will be appreciated!

I've downloaded thousands of songs, so ask away!
We have 3 iPods in our house and 1 cheapie mp3 player. iTunes is ridiculously simple to use and pretty cheap--99 cents per song. I also belong to eMusic. I love that site because it's all artists on independent labels, though you'd be surprised who's on there. It is a subscription service with different "levels" of membership. I do the $10 per month membership that gives me 40 downloads a month.
For high speed, download time is seconds, really.
Things Mom should know? Well, I usually ask before he downloads to see what he's wanting to buy, and sometimes I'll look at the download to make sure it says "Clean" on the version if it's a rap song, for example. Well, more Green Day in our house. But I digress...

Kids? What? You don't think we download music, too? :funn:

When I occasionally download music online, I use realplayer.com. Albums are typically $10 and individual songs are typically $ .99 each.

What you should know: the kids who download typically are not the ones paying the bill, and they don't know their limitations. It is easier to find music that you like because they use data banks to store info on buyers noting "people who bought this item also bought ..." They also have "similar artists" search. Both of these tends to help you spend more money downloading more songs.

This has totally been my experience on eMusic--this factor alone has caused me to spend hours on the site; finding songs by an artist I already know and love, then using suggestions of similar or even directly related artists...it can go on forever. The great thing about eMusic, too, is that they offer lots of info on all their artists and the individual albums. This, honestly, has made for some really interesting reading!
Because it's a subscription service, however, I don't end up spending more money by doing this. My spending is essentially frozen once I reach my monthly download limit.
Anyone who's intrigued should PM me--if you join, I get 50 free downloads, and so do you!

Thanks guys...so far we've tried Kazaa, which, with my connection, just sits there :bang: and iTunes told us up front they require broadband. So, the grump ("my friend on Cabbage Rose Lane downloads songs; why can't I?") and I will wait until we get a better connection...or get my relatives to download for him! 😀

I think that's best...much less frutrating. You'll be amazed at how fast a song downloads. We use iTunes and like Pea said, incredibly user friendly.
