abstinence and alternative penetration

From Walton Sun

When South Walton High School junior, Samantha Carter transferred from her high school in Atlanta, she was surprised at the lack of sexual education information in her new district.
?We don?t talk about sex much at school,? she said.
She was counting on going to the annual abstinence rally in Destin, but to her dismay it was cancelled this year.
?We decided to plan our own abstinence rally,? Carter said.
Along SWHS group First Priority, Carter asked Brian Crook, the youth pastor at Good News United Methodist Church, for assistance.
Crook was supportive of Carter?s vision because teens don?t have a realistic idea of the problems related to sex within the school system, he said.
?Many (girls) may have had abortions or just disappeared,? he added.
After making a few phone calls, Crook was able to enlist Silver Ring Thing, a multi-media sexual abstinence program geared toward teens.
?It?s a worthwhile cause and I?m embracing it,? Crook said.
The congregation embraced the project too, donating more than $4,000 in one week to fund the event.
On Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m., Good News United Methodist Church will host a free abstinence rally at South Walton High School. The rally is open to the public.
Through this program, Carter hopes to ?plant a seed? in the hearts of area teens.
?(Abstinence) is the only way that?s true no fail,? she said.

Many Teens Who Take 'Virginity Pledges' Substitute Other High-Risk Behavior for Intercourse, Study Says

Although teenagers who take "virginity pledges" begin engaging in vaginal intercourse later than teens who have not committed to remain abstinent until marriage, they also are more likely to engage in oral or anal sex than nonpledging virgin teens and less likely to use condoms once they become sexually active, according to a study published in the April issue of the... Journal of Adolescent Health, the Washington Post reports.

I saw the same Washington Post report. Sadly, the stats don't support abstinence- you end up with uneducated kids at some point having sex and not having the knowledge to protect themselves from disease or pregnancy.

so true jdarg.

let's really mess up our kids, don't teach them about sex or personal responsibility or making choices or protecting themselves from deadly disease. let's give them a silver ring and teach them to keep their legs together. it doesn't matter what other behaviors they may engage in as long as it isn't intercourse... don't get me started... :(

my mom was very up front with us about sex ed and all that, and i think we both turned out fine if i do say so myself. i think when you keep telling kids not to do something, it just makes them want to do it more. since i don't have kids, i may be waaay off base, but just a personal thought. i think any knowledge is good knowledge.

I think my kids think I'm a pervert too because I'm very open and up front about sex. I have a daughter who will be 17 next month and I know that when she is ready to make that big decision she will at the very least know how to protect herself. Way too many of her friends have made bad decisions that have led to pregnancy scares and just plain hurt feelings. I also agree that you can't just tell kids not to have sex and hope they listen. They need to be informed on all of the options so that they can make decisions that are right for themselves.

If you were truly open and honest about sex with your kids, wouldn't they know that you were not a pervert?

no, teenagers don't know what to think about their parent who is talking openly about sex - a subject that your parent should NOT know that much about much less talk about it openly! how embarrassing! but, they will eventually learn how wise their parent is, pervert or not.

I applaud the efforts of this teen! At least she is doing something to make a difference. Just because you support abstinence does not mean you don't educate. I think most teens know what a condom is and how to use it, however most of them don't seem to know how to say "no thank you". "I'm am not ready. I am more valuable than that." That's what they need to learn!

I agree with you completely. however, I hear a lot about the "politics" of teaching abstinence in schools, instead of a comprehensive sex education program (no condomns!). this is so unrealistic. Best teach your children yourselves if you want them to know the facts, and how saying no thank you is a good choice, good choices vs bad choices, consequences, and the value of oneself (this starts very young for the child), and how the world really works in general... abstinence is a good choice, I wish every teenager would go this route, but it just isn't realistic to expect this from all or even most.

My point is that parents should be educating their children since they are very young. If you wait until they're teens you've failed. Then they get stupid ideas like having sex in the butt instead of in the front preserves their integrity.

But then what can you expect from a country that worships violence and bans sex?

It seems it is hard to find the right balance, that is for sure. I agree that the education needs to start at home early. My girls could tell you that I wasn't so good at it. I did try but it's not as easy as it sounds. I was pretty good at teaching them that they can say NO. That boys do not have the right to touch them and that they would definitely try!

Right on, Tootsie! If you get into the habit of periodically having talks about sex with your children, it is far easier to approach them when you know they are of the age to be experimenting or thinking about it. Nothing worse than telling them about the birds and the bees when they're in first grade and then dropping the subject 'til they're in high school. It's too late then. Better to have built up a rapport of comfortabity with your kids. Sex is sex, but it's much more than the mechanics. You need to impart your moral values to your kids, too...talk, talk, talk to them. Tell them how YOU feel and they'll tell you how THEY feel (just be prepared to faint sometimes 😀 )

i know this sounds silly, but i think in some ways the sex talks would have garnered more attention coming from another respected (this being the key word) adult as opposed to a parent. when i was a a tween and a teen i thought my mom was the stupidest person on the face of the planet. she couldn't possibly know what she was talking about ! i knew as a young child i didn't want kids, so abstinence was definitely the route for me. my sis says she was a virgin til she got married - i don't believe it, but i do believe her husband is the only one she's been with. our school didn't have a formal sex ed program, a lot of kids would have benefitted from one. it was just mentioned in passing in health class. i think back in the 70's and early 80's a lot of kids got their sex ed on the school bus.
