All the President?s Zombies

The debate over the ?public option? in health care has been dismaying in many ways. Perhaps the most depressing aspect for progressives, however, has been the extent to which opponents of greater choice in health care have gained traction ? in Congress, if not with the broader public ? simply by repeating, over and over again, that the public option would be, horrors, a government program.

Washington, it seems, is still ruled by Reaganism ? by an ideology that says government intervention is always bad, and leaving the private sector to its own devices is always good.

Call me na?ve, but I actually hoped that the failure of Reaganism in practice would kill it. It turns out, however, to be a zombie doctrine: even though it should be dead, it keeps on coming.

Let?s talk for a moment about why the age of Reagan should be over.

First of all, even before the current crisis Reaganomics had failed to deliver what it promised. Remember how lower taxes on high incomes and deregulation that unleashed the ?magic of the marketplace? were supposed to lead to dramatically better outcomes for everyone? Well, it didn?t happen.

To be sure, the wealthy benefited enormously: the real incomes of the top .01 percent of Americans rose sevenfold between 1980 and 2007. But the real income of the median family rose only 22 percent, less than a third its growth over the previous 27 years.

However, Yasser Arafat is also a past winner. Go figure. :idontno:

:floor:...oh, the irony.

There was no obligation for an answer and I would not have bugged the crap out of anyone for one. I was giving thanks for a proper answer not a political rant.

Sarcasm on/ Some of us may have lived long enough and are interested enough to remember and have lived the things we talk about. It isn't always necessary to look up independent sources and respond with non-partisan rhetoric. We have long memories and have already done that once in our lives and possibly do not care to do it again.

You forgot to turn it off.

The day I accept someone older than me stating that something is true "because they say so" is the day I might as well move to China and gather rice.

The point is that they haven't refuted my post with actual facts because the idea that Reagan ended communism is the same as the examples I gave. He didn't do anything, he showed up. Kind of like our last President.

There's no point, no matter what I might post to the contrary you would simply argue against it.

I firmly believe Reagan was the greatest president of our time, and I honestly feel he helped bring about the collapse of the USSR. A lot of historians agree. You're welcome to believe, whatever you want to believe, and you can post whatever you want to post, it won't change my view of things. (and vice versa) I'm not interested in getting into any more pointless, endless, partisan threads.

reagan runs counter to your ideas of deficit spending, so what possible reason could you hold him up on a pedestal? the worthless rhetoric?
