US pays $400 per gallon for gas in Afghanistan | Raw Story

Last year, the price of gasoline in the United States topped the $4 per gallon mark.
This year in Afghanistan, the price has topped $400.
The stunning revelation emerged Thursday in a report from the Pentagon to House officials. The information conveyed offers new insight into a recent report by the Congressional Research Service, which found that the US spends $1 million per year for each servicemember on the ground in Afghanistan.
Why so much? The cost includes shipping, which sometimes includes the pricetag of a helicopter flight. Sending fuel by helicopter is woefully inefficient, because it uses up almost as much fuel as it carries.
Speaking to the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill, House Appropriations chairman John Murtha (D-PA) said the figure was ?worrisome? and "we started looking into it.?

Afghanistan is also landlocked, meaning that fuel must be transported in ways that stretch the limits of economic reason.
Because the country has no seaports, fuel is shipped to Karachi, in Pakistan, then carried across land by commercial trucks through Afghanistan. For remote bases, gasoline is sometimes transported by air.
"One of the most expensive ways to supply fuel is by transporting it in bladders carried by helicopter; the amount that can be flown at one time can barely satisfy the need for fuel," the Hill notes.
The paper notes that the $400 pricetag is referred to in Pentagon argot as the ?fully burdened cost of fuel.?
The government's Defense Energy Support Center provides fuel to the military at $2.78 per gallon, the conveyance of which then grows exponentially more expensive as it travels through dangerous combat zones.
Gen. James Conway, who runs the Marine Corps, told a Navy forum that perilous risky routes up gasoline that originally cost $1.04 gallon up to $400.
?These are fairly major problems for us,? Conway was quoted as saying.

Well, that would certainly explain why the wars cost so much!

I find this rather hard to believe - obviously the difficulties of the location and terrain would bump the price up, but $400 a gallon seems excessive.

The simple solution is to invade a neighboring country with a lot of oil. Oh wait a minute, we already did that. Where's our free oil!

We could have all of the oil in the middle east but still cant burn it to run vehicles....

p.s.....It's still no excuse for $400 a gallon...:yikes:

I find this absolutely ridiculous - how is it noone can think of any lower cost alternatives?

Alternate energy? Bio-diesel? Dropping fuel tanks out of airplanes? Using humans or animals to carry fuel?

Yes, there aren't a lot of airports or infrastructure in Afghanistan - but exactly where do we fight wars where there are?

The Afghans and Taliban sure as hell aren't spending $400 a gallon on fuel. Of course, they also aren't giving private contractors carte blanche at the taxpayer's expense......................which tends to raise prices quite a bit.

Dumb and substance free... Krazy K, that could be your new tag line!

Seriously, where does the $400 go? To Halliburton, who probably outsources the tanker truck drivers from Pakistan for $8 an hour...

Just because it is posted on the internet somewhere does not make it official. How foolish this must look to the educated eye. This RAW STORY is nothing more but another BLOG News Paper. It hardly backs up its statement with creditable references. I wish people would look past the page that pops up on the computer screen and really see who and what is posting the information. Linking to what I would call agenda loaded bloging does not build upon my trusting the information. Do some research about the RAW STORY prior to posting it would save allot of Ewww Weee in the future.

From their "ABOUT" page:

The Raw Story is an alternative news nexus. We draw upon a panoply of news sources and select those stories we think most intriguing to an audience seeking news underplayed by the mainstream media.

I don't understand why there are wars in Afghanistan in the first place. If all those crazy Taliban would simply stop reading their korans and start smoking some of the incredible dope that country produces, it'd be the most peacful place on earth.

I could respect that, However I will go with the source I know is honest and has nothing to gain by fabricating a story. The fuel we use there is NOT LOCAL. The fuel we use is off our TANKERS and distributed to our troops. I just wonder how I might know this as a FACT? Hummmm just saying.

This makes perfect sense. Fuel is a critical resource, we probably don't want to be filling up our tanks at the local Taliban run gas station.

Again, seriously, who does the $400 per gallon go to? Do you think US soldiers tank the stuff in, or do you think government contractors, such as Halliburton, tank the the stuff in? Do they make a profit off of supplying the military with supplies? (Hint: these are all dumb questions...of course they do.) Why do you think Cheney is saying Obama is "dithering" about Afgan? Duh...

I did not know one of their largest crops was maryjane. This expensive gas is news to me, also. We should just leave, tightly protect our borders and keep intelligence working to snake out the terrorist cells.

According to the article, it's purchased in places like Pakistan, shipped to a central location in Afghanistan, then flown to the outlier locales.

Not sure why you seem obsessed with Halliburton in this, I don't think they are involved at all. If you find they are involved and that upsets you, you might consider sending a complaint letter to our current Commander in Chief.

Because he knows Obama is more concerned about his healthcare plan passing.
