Newspaper sales moved sharply lower this year, falling about 10 percent in the six months ended Sept. 30 compared to the same period last year, according to figures released on Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulation.

Circulation has been sliding since the early 1990s, but in the last few years, the pace of the decline has accelerated sharply. In the same six-month period a year ago, circulation fell at roughly half the rate. The decline has been attributed to the continued migration of readers to the Web, the deep recession, newspapers intentionally shedding unprofitable circulation and, in some cases, waning reader interest as budget cuts reduce the content of the papers.

As it had warned, circulation for USA Today suffered a steep drop, in part a reflection of the slump in the hotel and airline industries, which distribute most of that paper?s copies. USA Today, printed only on weekdays, fell from almost 2.3 million to 1.9 million, a 17.1 percent drop, losing the top spot in weekday circulation for the first time since the 1990s to The Wall Street Journal.

can a small town journalist hop a plane and fly to malaysia? nyt, feel the love!

Who needs the delayed hyperbole of the NYT's view (or any other old school source) when we can read the blogs a hundred Malaysian bloggers (who don't have to fly anywhere to be in the thick of what's going on), plus commentary and wider analysis through thousands of other real-time bloggers all over the world? Face it, dead tree publications like the NYT are, dead.

The one place you won't find a lot of data flowing yet on the internet is local news. That will change in time. SoWal is proof of that.

case and point: Where could you first read about the Indonesian earth quake? Where could you see your first local footage? I guarantee it wasn't on CNN or the front page of the NYT.

i only bring politics in it because i know you will.

this isnt something youll find writtings on. do you think msnbc is going to report on this? or any other liberal outlet? the answer is noway. i would never know if it wasnt for people like oreilly and talk radio. and when its exposed its easy to read for ones self.

this isnt new to anyone. the nyt specifically is notorious for misinformation dating as far back as newspapers. back in the day they would have little bias and lots of info. these days its simply a political machine when it comes to politics and current events. other than that its actually a good publication.

please understand i dont have the time to research for you. i read during certain times of the day and thats for my information. but, there are somethings you simply wont find anything on because our crappy media doesnt find it newsworthy or it goes against their aggenda too.

I'd like to respond..er, nevermind, poppy already did.

They better figure something out before Carlos Slim gives Sulzberger a $250MM Columbian necktie.

From what 30a is saying, sounds like us reporters are going to be working for Kurt soon. Kurt, I love you dearly, but I would need a good check and health insurance. And could you throw in a company car, free organic English breakfast tea for my breaks, and Evamor water in the cooler? :D

It's not necessary when web vehicles like Twitter and Blogster are providing real time news and links to video, etc.

This reminds me of conversations I used to have back in 94', running around Talahassee trying to convince business owners they needed a web site. FYI miznotebook, you'll do just fine assuming you can let go of the past and move forward. You don't have to give up the perks either.

30a, I didn't think I was sounding like anyone but me being facetious, and I'll admit I've never been great at looking into the future. But I've observed that even those who are better at it sometimes get thrown a few curves. I know I sure wish those predictions they used to make about us having so much leisure time in the future had come true!

so this is news to you? you know how to google, google it. i have a biz to run.

do you think that liberal media is going to smear liberal media-NO. and the mass majority of newspapers are liberal. oreilly exposes them almost nightly.

lets see if i can think of one that even those who watch only liberal media may have heard of. oh, remember when the nyt smeared mccain for an alledged affair with a donor on the front page that turned out to be completely fabricated? and than the retraction was buried mid way through the paper? and theres those little facts that go against their aggenda that are conveniently left out. i mean, do i honestly need to take daily records so you can see this?

my main focus is the nyt, san fran chronicle, pal beach, boston globe and many others. news isnt news for them, its a way to push aggendas hense their current financial status. and of course the internet has been a factor, but trust is everything in that biz wouldnt you say?

If we allow trolling, name calling, and personal attacks, we are no better than talk radio or the "liberal media" you fear so much. Are we "conservative" or "liberal" if thoughtful discussion is encouraged?

Gray areas are where most of life happens. Black and white is boring.
