Republican sweep at the polls

Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, the reps had a good night. The thing I find interesting is that these election wins were granted by three groups - independents, who in large numbers switched parties and voted red, energized republican and conservative voters who turned out in very large numbers, and minority groups, which failed to show up at the polls in numbers equal to the last election.

The pundits seem to be making a big deal of this being some sort of referendum on Obama. Personally I don't see it that way, I think this was a rejection of single party control in Washington. That for me is a really welcome development.

One last snarky comment - any rumors of a "new progressive era" in United States politics are, I think, dead. The clock is ticking dems, your time in the spot light is winding down. You best get to work!

I think this was a rejection of single party control in Washington.

Not quite sure how the election of some Governors from the GOP side suggest this?

In fact, the only race that does have a direct impact on decision making in Washington was a vacant House seat in NY that went to a Democrat. The GOP had held that seat since U.S. Grant was President!

Agree.

An important fact to be considered-

Since 1989, the party winning the White House has always gone on to lose the gubernatorial races in both states the following year.

Pay attention at the deep local levels, too.
I just love mid-term elections. This to me is more about 'We the People,' with the voters knowing that the imbalance in politics is not what this country is founded upon.

This is not a stab at Dems or Reps, but rather, the people naturally balancing out our system. Obviously, 2010 will be more exciting as 1/3 of the Senators are up for re-election.

This is no doubt a referendum to the president, Im afraid.

Minorities and the youth dont normally vote in these elections. It was the minorities and the youth that got star struck with obama via the media and hollywood, but this kind of minipulation doesnt happen in local elections and the outcome of lastnight was a reflection of this.

The folks see the government spending widely, ignoring the regular folks and turning their backs to american traditions and structural grounds which made this country great. And the folks made that clear with their votes lastnight that will no doubt send shock waves directly to washington

This speaks volumes about 2010 and 2012 in my opinion. Actions speak louder than words and the people see little action and alot of words. And the actions they do see is everything we're not.

a republican in Jersey-WOW! speaks volumes in itself

Maybe....I hope it speaks more to the desire to get rid of corruption than GOP vs DEM....

I considered the demographics of this election as well and I think you are exactly right, which speaks mountains!

Run-off Mayoral Election for City of Atlanta.......female candidate is 10 points ahead, but in City of Atlanta, there has to be at least 50.01% to call the race. She's got a great shot at this and think she'll win in December. She will have a mess, but I think a great deal of support from Fed, which Atlanta hasn't had for a looooooooooog time. Wahooo~~~~~~~~

Why- because you say so?

I call BS just as I would if someone said there is no doubt that it is NOT a referendum to the president.

You seem to ignore the trend (see my previous post) and the exit polls which seek to identify why people voted the way they did.

I think I need a break. I am hypersensitive to the dems vs. repubs, us vs. them posts. I hate our party system. And hate is a word I really try to avoid using!!!

Geo totally nailed it - it isn't an indictment of Obama or anything of note - it's TOTALLY NORMAL that the other party does well in off year elections.

But that doesn't make for good headlines or news stories, so it MUST be something else - there's air time to fill!

At this juncture in time, way to much is made of the parties and their influence on the voter, IMO. The election last night was not a referendum on Obama by any stretch of the imagination.
It was a statement the voters were sending to Washington DC, Trenton, NJ and Richmond VA that they are fed up and tired of politicos ignoring their wishes and spending money they don't have. We can only hope those in Congress will sit up and take notice.

no, not because i think so. its because im looking at exit poll opinions and the simple fact that the regular folks that dont follow politics are feeling it in the wallet and seeing the weakness in our federal government. my family voted for obama and see nothing coming from it but chaos, irresponsiblilty, radicalism to the top positions and frankly an empty suit politician being a politician/radical versus the almighty leader we were promised to get. they see the only economic growth is from the government while the private sector who creates jobs and fuels growth and prosperity is being stepped on. this is economics 101 and its being felt nation wide trust me on this one.

the obama campaign showed that trends mean nothing. if your going to tell me that corzine being voted out by a republican isnt a referendum towards obama than we have nothing to debate here. people are pissed off and see whats going on in washington and are using their voting power to speak there peace. its the only way washington will listen in modern day american.

so let me get this straight, it was a referendum towards congress majority, but not obama? and the difference is?

One is the legislative branch and the other the executive branch and they have different responsibilities and functions. At this time, both stink, functionality wise and while you're at it, throw in the judical branch as well.

Corzine was a lousy Governor, pure and simple. Do you live anywhere near New Jersey or have any family living there that would make you know anything about NJ politics?

But what the MSM and FOX news are not reporting and what may be a true indicator of the politic climate of the GOP is that a Democrat won the NY 23rd District even after Palin, Rush et. al. spent over 1 million trying to get their man the seat. A Democrat from that district hasn't had that seat since the Civil War.

im fully aware of the branches of government. fact is, the leadership in both the house and senate are completely on board with what obama wants to do. after all, obama is letting pelosi take complete control of so-called health reform.

yes, corzine was a horrible governor and so has the majority of past dem govs. but, for a republican to win that seat in a very blue state is purely amazing in todays political world. and if it matters, i follow politics nation wide especially in the northeast where im from. but, nice smug comment.

how do you know these folks spent 1million to get the gop candidate elected? olby tell you that. throwing your support doesnt mean spending money. there are laws against such a thing. why would palin or rush spend their own money to get someone elected in NY. think about it clearly instead of through the eyes of ideology....itll get you nowhere. trust me, i was there.

and upper NY isnt nearly has important to losing a blue state (NJ) and a red state that recently went for obama (V). that was suprising though. but, hoffman jumped in too late in the game on that one. could have been a different story otherwise. ive been to that area lots and its a red area for the most part.

what is with your obsession with sarah palin-geez! get over her!

and if you think she's the kiss of death to any potential candidate, ill just say i told you so now to get it out of the way. just last week biden showed up at a rally to find only approx 250 people with most being from the press. sarah sold out that very stage just three days later. mmmmmm. its amazing what youll find out when your not being fed hatred from olby and co

Club for Growth spend the $1 million. They are dedicated to the eradication of RINOs.

Watch them go after Charlie next:

Club for Growth Is on Hunt for Republicans Who ‘Don’t Fit the Bill’ - Washington Wire - WSJ

Meet their standards, or they will attack and outspend you.

(BTW, they only rated Mel Martinez 43%; which made him a RINO. Probably too soft on immigration issues.)

No comparison between Biden and Palin. Biden doesn't begrudgingly attempt to ruin people's lives only to have it explode in his face.

Nothing unusual about a Rep governor from a Blue state, Romney, Weld, Bueller.... Bueller.

How did Sarah Palin sell out a room with a capacity of 400 three days after Biden when the rally you are referring to was held on Monday Nov. 2? Have you now conquered that space time continuum thing?
