Hookah pipes popular with teens

University of Florida News - New study measures hookah use among Florida teens

Rooted in Middle Eastern culture, hookah pipes burn charcoal and tobacco, also known as shisha. Air is drawn through the tobacco and into the pipe, where it passes through water....There are at least 100 hookah lounges in Florida and most have opened in the past few years, Barnett said. Hookah is typically shared in groups and smoked with sweetened, flavored tobacco.

I always assumed hookah = pot. Hookah lounges? Anybody seen one?

Not in this country - seemed like a cool place, and had great rugs, but I don't smoke so the main objective was lost on me.

Trendy in larger cities. Louisville has a popular one- Will wanted to check it out when we were there (because he really really wants to be a hippie:roll:) and we almost went in to gawk, but I decided a good mom probably doesn't take her 16 year old to a hookah lounge. It also served food, but the thought of food and sweetened tobacco smoke made me kinda ill.

We have one or two of those lounges in SoTamp. I have been in one of them very briefly and it was stinky.

It is definitely a trend. There are several places where you can get supplies for home use.

I think whacky weed is smoked in them in other countries. Maybe it will be whacky weed in those cities, which have decriminalized?

Hookahs and jewelry??? Strange, indeed~~~~~~

Kurt, the town of your alma mater has at least 2 hookah lounges that I have seen. They are on University, across 13th and toward downtown Gainesville.

It is a fad (and both Grayton Boys have apparently been to these places), but I bet it won't last. Right up there with oxygen bars....

Hippie Pa*l is the logical proprietor. I hope he has the good sense to hire some cute Asian girls looking for little less in compensation than the chance to meet some Americans for 'make good wife'. A name? 'Bongs! Bongs! Bongs!' with the cute little Asians...we are looking at 'a hit' here, pardon the pun.

Doesn't most of the world put a hunk of hash on top of the coals with or without tobacco?

The White Rabbit because of the "hookah smoking caterpillar" reference in that song.

My vote would be Pauley Shore (for his great stoner laugh); the name would be "Bogart's Joint"......:rolling::rolling::rolling::rolling::rolling:

Our Medical Director is a fan. He's really a closet (cigarette) smoker, so I guess this appeals to him. It's also somehow connected with his heritage. Anyway, he took me and Anna.Tackett one day. We all smoked the hookah.

Several Hookah lounges in Atlanta. Not really my thing though. They were very popular when they first started showing up about 5-7 years ago but I haven't heard of anyone going in the last few years -- maybe because I "aged out" of the crowd that would go!

Great, something else to worry about. :bang: I just quizzed the young one. He knew all about it.

I just found out (by way of my niece, thankfully not my son) what salvia was. Now this. Truth be known, salvia scares me a hell of a lot more than hookah does.

Perhaps I should just stick with margaritas and pudding shots.
