Catholic Church Emerges as Key Player in Legislative Battle - WSJ.com Catholic Church Emerges as Key Player in Legislative Battle
By PETER WALLSTEN
Injecting itself aggressively into the health-care debate, the Roman Catholic Church in America has emerged as a major political force with the potential to upend a key piece of President Barack Obama's agenda.
Behind-the-scenes lobbying, coupled with a grassroots mobilization of Catholic churches across the country, led the House Saturday to pass an amendment to its health-care bill barring anyone who receives a new tax credit from enrolling in a plan that covers abortion, a once-unthinkable event in Democrat-dominated Washington.
The restriction would still have to be accepted by the Senate, where it will likely face a tough fight. The issue could sink the larger health legislation if the chambers fail to reach agreement, or if any consensus language leads supporters to defect.......this is unthinkable intervention in government

I know it's a political hot potato, but why are they putting restrictions on medical care already?
I'm not Catholic, and I might need that procedure to save my life someday........ let's say when I'm married and really want that baby, but it ISN'T POSSIBLE. Not because I'm some breezy kneed ho like they want to make out. Sucks to be me trying to get medical care to save my life.

Let me remind the knee jerk Catholic haters out there that without church lobbying you might not have a passed house bill right now. It sounds to me like the Catholic effort is consistent with President Obama's. "I laid out a very simple principle, which is this is a health care bill, not an abortion bill," Obama said. "And we're not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions,". Do you really want to let a squabble between the far left and far right sink the entire effort? If so, stay tuned because from what I see on the news it is coming down the pike in the Senate.

I have a dream too... One day we will wake up and people will use their free will to choose to serve God, like we are supposed to...pure religion isnt dis-organized, it is man who puts his doctrines in that corrupts... The gospel of Christ is as harmonious as it gets....

does it bother you that i cant just sit around and google articles to prove im intelligent? do you want me to write you an entitlement check?

“And one more misunderstanding I want to clear up: Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions.”
The Catholic church played a part, but Mr. Stupak and the other 39 pro life Dems stuck with their morals and values. Blame the Vatican all you want, but it was 40 Democrats that would have killed the bill had the language not been changed to bar federal $ from subsidizing abortion.

Thank you, but no need to write me a check. I wouldn't want to take any of your money from the contracts you claim you have with the Federal Government you so dispise.

There are no Catholic haters, it's just we want religion to stay out of government and government to stay out of religion whether the results are good or bad.

Per news reports, the House bill with the Stupak amendment still allows for exemptions in the case of risk to mother's life, incest and rape.

I can't decide if I love this, or hate it. People have done some great things because of their faith, but so many pervert religion for their own ends and gains.

I guess I am okay with it then - hate legislating medical care, but I know it's a hot button issue.

This is the type of post we can do without - blanket generalizations and name calling is unnecessary and simply illustrates your own shortcomings to the intelligent and thoughtful members of our community.
This is the last of several polite requests and warnings.

Huh? This is the politcal forum norm for the last several months!

I have to chime in and say I think the name calling and insults certainly come from both camps. I am sometimes embarrassed by those I am agreement with - because of the way opinions are stated - with little regard to the other side and without respect, and I do not like any blanket generalizations no matter who is making them. It is insulting. So IMHO many are guilty. I only hope I haven't crossed that line and hope I never will.

It definitely comes from both sides and Kurt is very fair about warnings - it's based on behavior, not political leanings.
Would love it if people could just be civil as I learn a lot when we actually discuss stuff.

Why do you selectively chastise? You lose credibility when you zero in on one poster when that person is not the only one in this post making generalizations.
What's the difference between kkddbb's broad statements and Lucifer Sam saying "religion makes people fly into buildings" and Alpha Crab stating flat-out that the Catholic church is archaic? If those aren't also blanket generalizations I don't know what is.
I'm not saying any of this is indicative of what intelligent and thoughtful members of this board contribute but c'mon, Kurt, fair's fair. Your rules are good but they should go for everybody.

It's not a perfect comparison by any means, I didn't come up with it, but it is food for thought at least for me. First of all, science is a methodology, and religion is an ideology. Science is morally neutral and deals with observable facts. One could certainly use the results of a scientific discovery to perpetrate evil motivated by his ideology. And yes, people of faith do good things in the name of their religion. However, when a group of people band together and do something totally irrational and evil be it an act of terrorism or a soccer riot, some sort of fundementalist belief is at work. Often it has a religious basis.
