Catholic Church gives D.C. ultimatum on same-sex marriage issue - washingtonpost.com

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

However they did say the church would continue to move pedophile priests around the country to avoid prosecution.

Exactly how does the proposed law keep the Church from fulfilling its mission to serve others?

Funny how most of the Bible sends a strong message about helping the poor or the unfortunate as an important mission...Jesus seem to have had a lot to say about that, but I really don't recall him wanting to get into negotiations with denying services to the needy to prevent two people from being happy together.

Strange world we live in!

wrong, and childish.

the catholic church is going to become more and more obsolete when people won't even consider the church's stance because it is so wrong and discriminates against others. in about 25 years we'll look back and wonder how anyone, especially a huge church, could support discrimination against homosexuals or any other group of wonderful people of this earth.

Catholic Charities, the church's social services arm, is one of dozens of nonprofit organizations that partner with the District. It serves 68,000 people in the city, including the one-third of Washington's homeless people who go to city-owned shelters managed by the church. City leaders said the church is not the dominant provider of any particular social service, but the church pointed out that it supplements funding for city programs with $10 million from its own coffers.

Those evil catholics and their 10 million in charitable giving! How dare refuse to become secular!

Homosexuality and how the church deals with it are going to be its Rubicon - there are too many gay Catholics and families affected for it to take an extreme and divisive stand and not have it blow up in their face.

Per Church doctrine you can accept and love homosexuals, while still disapproving of their lifestyle or actions - love the sinner, hate the sin in shorthand.

The government should be just as principled. In effect you have theCtholic Church resorting to bribery in order to get what they want. Screw 'em.

Unfortunately, too many in the flock can't seem to get past the 'hate" part of that equation, depending on how it gets edited by any church, not just the Catholic Church, at the pulpit...so ultimately that message can backfire.

Considering the number of gay Catholics who have "escaped to the cloth" over the millenium, you'd think they could have a better solution by now.

Voluntarily, but sure, that fits. Your point?
