What do you usually do for Thanksgiving? Do you stay in SoWal? Travel? Have folks come in?

What is your signature dish?

Gotta have pumpkin pie - I love making my own crust and designs!

I  Thanksgiving. One of my favorite holidays. This year it will be just the 2 of us, but that's ok too. I will still make a few of our favorites.

Next year we will be in our little house. That is something I will be thankful for :D

Thanks for sharing and here's hoping you have a lovin' Thanksgiving.

massive familial caloric consumption at noon followed by dish washing neglect and food coma....coffee and pecan pie for resuscitation. airing of grievances[festivus] upon non-residing family members' departure with vague vow to scale things down next year.

Thanksgiving is bigger than Christmas at our compound. Family from all over come and and many friends. We clean out my mothers garage, (it's heated and cooled) rent tables and chairs, decorate and cook, cook, cook. Back yard bonfires afterward, yes, plural. (Small ones, please don't call the FD)

We have a killer sweet potato casserole recipe to die for, corn pudding, the most fattening squash casserole ever, then the usual fare in abundance. Also make an amazing antipasta for a starter.

Last year my mother was with my ill grandmother and was not here for Thanksgiving, so we decided to forego the usual festivities. We are going to make up for it this year!!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Be thankful.

I head back home for a late afternoon formal meal with 3-4 generations of my family - everyone gets dressed up and we break out the linens, silver, china, and crystal.

Traditional food - turkey on the grill, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans or carrots, cranberry sauce or chutney, zucchini or cranberry orange bread, and apple or pecan or mincemeat and pumpkin pie.

Everything from scratch w/the exception of sometimes using the cranberry sauce from a can or ice cream instead of freshly whipped cream for the pie.

Papa Scooterbug will read the Thanksgiving prayer that Grandpa used to do, and everyone says what they are thankful for while the turkey is carved and plates are served (beginning with the oldest female and ending w/ the youngest male).

Grandma will share a clipping about Thanksgiving from the WSJ and will count the number of glasses of wine I drink, Mama Scooterbug will try to get me to eat stuffing (I hate it), my uncle will eat too much and fall asleep at the table, or disappear into the den to watch football (TV and other electronics are verboten) until his wife notices, my little cousins will terrorize the dogs (who will become bolder around the turkey as the night continues), and then while we are all done doing the dishes we will call Scooterbro - who has to cook Thanksgiving dinner for hundreds of people and can't be there.

Are you sure your family's last name isn't Currier or Ives??

LOL on hating the dressing. I used to HATE it - now, it is my favorite thing. My mom and dad are both gone now, so that's a bummer. Anyway - ENJOY the day

Thanks for sharing all of you. Bob, no one could write about Thanksgiving the way you do. ;-) Nice packaged way to sum up the day for many.

Swafia and I like to go party hopping!

We start out with an early lunch with my side of the family--usually down on our dock on Eastern lake, although this year another family member will be hosting at her house in Seagrove--complete with Appalachicola oysters as appetizers (my grandfather and his little sister like to try to outdo one another on these).

Next we go see my extended family--great aunts, cousins, etc.--for the midafternoon lunch. This is usually at a state park (Grayton or Pinelog, until this year--I believe they'll be utilizing the beautiful new facilities at Eden )

Then we top it all off with Swafia's family dinner and, boy, lemme' tell ya! SeagroveGirl is NOT kidding when she says they do it right! Poor Swafia has missed the past TWO years (last year, because of his Great-Grandmother, and the year before because he was out at sea) and he is itchin' for the holidays this year!

Thanksgiving is, by far, one of my favorite holidays!

The last two Thanksgivings, my ex had my daughter in Illinois so I pretty much did nothing but rest up for the nightmare of Black Friday. This year I have my daughter and I plan to do some serious cooking! lol :D I am also looking forward to getting a Christmas Tree the weekend after Thanksgiving and putting it up with Imygyn. She is ten years old and everything is still so fresh and magical for her. She is really stressing over writing Santa to put in her requests too! lol

Oh Douglas that sounds perfect!! What a lucky little girl
Does she write Santa online or snail mail? I remember how much fun those days were with my boys. I know you cherish the time you have with her.

We have the tradition of putting up the tree the day after Thanksgiving also. This year, moondoogie and I are going to just put some lights on the Norfolk Pine  (like the parents in The Snowman - anyone else a fan of that animated masterpiece??)

Have a great family time!

We don't put up the tree until a week or so before Christmas, but the wednesday before Thanksgiving is when Papa Scooterbug and I put up the lights.

Mama Scooterbug is at work all day, so we are left unsupervised - which is why she usually comes home to X-mas light installations Macgyver would be proud of - utilizing the flagpole, various trees, ropes and stakes, the fence, etc.

Someday when we win the lotto and live in Seagrove I'm sure our family will want to come to us but for now, we spend our holiday in Texas.

Hubby's mom remarried and moved to Tyler, TX so he goes to her house for Thanksgiving dinner. I go to my Deda's house (mom's mom) for the BEST Thanksgiving lunch because my Deda is the BEST cook-anyone who's been to dinner at her house agrees, it's really not just my opinion. We have chicken and dressing, turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, potato casserole, corn, green beans, field peas, squash casserole, mac n cheese, cranberry sauce and jelly, banana nut cake, pecan pie, chocolate chip pecan pie and chocolate pie-don't ya'll wish you were going to be in Sulphur Springs, TX!!! There are 17 of us and the 3 youngest (6, 4, and new baby cousin) keep us well entertained, usually we decorate my Deda's house for Christmas that afternoon-if the weather is good we do the outside and if the weather is yuck then we do the inside that day.

Then most years I'd be on to my dad's side of the family but this year that group is on the road, half in Austin and half in Childress, TX. This year, hubby and I both return home to Arlington, TX after these huge meals (hoping to stay awake to drive after all that food) to pack and fly to Key West on Friday morning for 8 days to kick off our holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving to all, have a wonderful and blessed holiday!

We used to live not that far from Tyler when we were in LA. Surprised we couldn't smell past Thanksgivings from the way you described her cooking!:biggrin:

WOW - 8 days in Key West!!! That sounds fabulous! :yikes::clap:

Enjoy - don't have to tell you that as everything sounds I D E A L truly!!

For the past 4 years we have loaded up everything and spent Thanksgiving in Seagrove, wife, daughter, son in law, son and most of all our grandson. We have almost as much fun during this time as we do in the summer. Have turkey and all the trimmings, fish a little, shop and ride bikes. Any time at the beach is good for us. Couldnt think of a better place to be than SOWAL.
