Obama a lot like Jimmy Carter?

Maybe so says German pub Der Speigel in their article

From the article:

Upon taking office, Obama said that he wanted to listen to the world, promising respect instead of arrogance. But Obama's currency isn't as strong as he had believed. Everyone wants respect, but hardly anyone is willing to pay for it. Interests, not emotions, dominate the world of realpolitik. The Asia trip revealed the limits of Washington's new foreign policy: Although Obama did not lose face in China and Japan, he did appear to have lost some of his initial stature.
...
The White House did not even stand up for itself when it came to the question of human rights in China. The president, who had said only a few days earlier that freedom of expression is a universal right, was coerced into attending a joint press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao, at which questions were forbidden. Former US President George W. Bush had always managed to avoid such press conferences.

Being likened to Jimmy Carter is never a compliment.

A lack of greed doesn't make up for a complete lack of competence....

This NYT Article talks about how happy some of the recipients of that charity are....

George W. Bush was very good at avoiding most any type of press conference.

Some people just have to tear down others in a pathetic attempt at making themselves feel better. If they do it to politicians you know they also do it to their family, friends, and neighbors. Stay far away from these people.

Only if they, like politicians, are also public figures and doing something reprehensible.

That's not true. Bush held regular press conferences. In fact I believe he and Obama are on about the same track, averaging about four a year. Bush's father also held regular press conferences, he enjoyed them, as did Clinton, who has to be the all time winner in most presidential press conferences for any president.

I'm often surprised at how badly former President Carter seems to be remembered today. It seems that in this day and age, his emphasis on frugality in government spending would be appreciated. I also remember him wearing a sweater in the White House during the winter to keep the heating bill down!

He was a Democrat with Democrat majorities in both houses of Congress and yet he managed to avoid pursuing any serious energy legislation. There was a tiny solar water heating credit, but no meaningful legislation or leadership for the country towards energy independence.

He was the first President elected after the 73 fuel embargo and a nuclear engineer to boot. That embargo and our dependence on foreign oil were fresh in everyone's minds but he had no time to work on securing an energy independent future for the nation.

Maybe he was too busy supervising the use of the White House tennis courts to be bothered with such things.
