Well our weather...I mean meteorologist in the metro Atlanta are are in full blown frenzy. They just took us "live" to view the sand and salt they will be spreading if we get a snow flake or two.

Schools have early dismissal. :idontno: The grocery stores are now mobbed. Fortunately or unfortunately for us the temps have risen, but...that means we will probably get the dreaded ice storm when the temps plunge later this evening. I wouldn't mind a little snow, ice bites though!

Good thing we have a generator and I did a stock up at the grocery store ahead of the mobs! I do predict NoHall will be seeing some snow and probably singinchicken. I predict we won't. maybe I'm wrong. Either way, bring it on, I think I'm ready!!!

:lol:Thank you.
It's unbearably cold this evening. Don't know what the freakin' wind chill is, but I am not amused.

Winter does indeed suck! Spent the evening just trying to stay warm and have now resorted to using my deck as additional refridgeration and freezer space. If you don't here from me tommorw, I love you all!

That is the only good thing when the temps are 7 degrees you can leave your groceries in the car.

Yeah, Mr. DD's beer's been outside for days now. He's on a winterizing frenzy tonight. There's duct tape and plastic garbage bags around and he's cussing the frozen garden hose....duh.
Check in every few hours and let us know you're ok.

Grape or cherry?
I'm orange.

Wind chill is something like 50 below......I heard this for Dallas. Dallas and Atlanta, 50 below. Ice everywhere. Dangerous! Twenty-seven car pile up! Why? Why? Why do people insist on driving on ice? Police and DOT barricaded several roads and drivers went around and did what? Crashed! All of them. Our temps won't be above freezing until Tuesday!

I called a taxi for my meeting last night and am going to walk tonight.
Snow is okay. Ice is really scary. I'm driving to Midtown in the AM to pick up daughter and JP, take them to Lenox to pick up a few things, then drive them to SoSoATL for the engagement party. They are babies and scared to drive in these icy weather conditions.

BTW the 27-vehicle accident was due to DOT forgetting to gravel the ramp from 85 to 285 just southwest of Hartsfield.

I heard that about DOT, but the Yankee news reported this morning: "Inexperienced Winter Southern Drivers caused a 27 car pile up!" Whomever claims they can drive on ice needs to review that video of the 18-wheeler spinning out on ice.......from the North or Midwest somewhere where they are more experienced.

I take exception to that statement.

I think you'll be fine going to Lenox if you stay on Peachtree or Piedmont, not Buford Hwy. Good luck!!!

You CAN drive on ice - you just have to know what you are doing and most importantly SLOW the heck down! People drive on frozen lakes and rivers - even with semis, check out "Ice Road Truckers"!

A lack of gravel is not the main cause of that accident IMO. People following too closely and typically standing on their brakes to stop are.

Not saying ice is the preferred driving surface or that others would be accident free in the same conditions, but you typically don't have a 27 car pileup because people are driving appropriately for the conditions and know what they are doing.

If it makes you feel any better, most Northerners try to stay off the roads during the first big snow because even those gloating tundra folks need to remember/relearn how to drive in those conditions and more accidents occur.

One of the local TV stations took a camera crew out to a busy intersection yesterday. The majority of the cars had no problem when they hit the icy spots. Then there were the, "oh shhheeeetttt it's ice, let me stand up on my brake pedal", variety. They interviewed one guy that fit the latter category, with his Taco Bell bag on his lap and his excuse was, "the road just gave out on me!" Another, female this time says, "I think my tires are a little bald!" :floor: At least it's been entertaining.

:floor:I saw those interviews - they were funny.

I've seen those truck drivers on ice. The difference I think is the wide open spaces so if/when there is a mishap, it most likely is not a crash into another vehicle, telephone/electric pole or flipping, like one car did here. And, they are quite impressive on those runs.

Normal street driving with icy conditions poses many more issues.

Like Papa Scooterbug encouraging me to practice controlled skids in friends' cul-de-sacs..................and Mama Scooterbug finding out about it.

Seriously, you CAN drive on ice - you just have to keep your motions small, your speed reduced, and your touch on either pedal light - major issues for most drivers - especially those who think 4 wheel drive makes them invincible and has some magic effect on their braking distance. :bang:

Though I must admit that a stick shift on ice is a pain - especially when you are starting uphill.

Agreed. We all had our lessons, too; although, not every year like you did. Seems like instinct, but you'd be surprised.

As a former yankee, I have to say though its very possible to drive on ice, it still sucks! ;-) I remember when I took my very first car (75 camaro) out on an icy road for the first time seemingly centuries ago, and quickly found myself doing a 360!:biggrin:

It has been amazing here at the lake to see water freeze along the shore where the wind whips the water up- lots of stalagtites (or stalagmites). Now, this morning there is a thin sheet of ice in the cove behind the house where ducks usually hang out. WAY COOL (and cold)! Never thought I would see it this cold for this long IN TEXAS to make parts of the lake freeze.

I remember this happening way back in...maybe 1983? I'm ready for a heat wave!
