We just came back from the beach. The dolphins sure do come in close.
This time, Elwood was wading into the water and even allowing for my fore-shortened view, the dolphin could not have been more than five feet from my dog. You could see his smiley face.
Elwood turned around and looked at me as if to say, "Is this okay?"
Dolphins fascinate him but he's always been wary of them.
Then Elwood sort of lunged closer, and I called him back because I did not want to harass the dolphin. Elwood obeyed me (I think he was a little bit intimidated) and the dolphin followed him (!) but when it became just too shallow, he turned around.
How safe is this? Should I have not let him in at all?

I don't know how safe it is....But I sure do think it is cool!!!! I think it is fine as long as neither was bothered by the other. IMHO!!!!!

I don't know either, but that is about the greatest thing I've heard in many days now! That just makes my day. I would've loved to have seen that!

We have swam with the dolphins around Shell Island with only one incident. One dolphin nipped at my step son. You just never know. They are like every other wild animal..some are tamer than others... :idontno:
Thanks for sharing, Franny. Yeah I guess I was sort of concerned for both Elwood as well as the dolphin. Wild animals are just that--wild.
It still amazes me how close they come to shore.

What a memorable event. What beach was this at? We've seen dolphins in the distance in the Seacrest Beach area -- several of them jumping as they passed by us. But never seen them very close to the shore.

It was Cape San Blas, not far from Salinas Park.

Thanks. It sounded lovely to see them close up (and wise of you to check on how safe that is!). Our daughters swam with the dolphins at the aquarium in Panama City last year in a controlled environment. They loved it and it was a memorable life event for them. And we have sweet photos for their memories. (it was VERY expensive but worth it as a one-time event)
