Ok, so I've been quiet for several months. But I have news...
I have a new job at a wonderful liberal arts college in Memphis as a Provost and Academic VP. Meanwhile, daughter has gotten into a great college here in the NE, so Mr. New Yorker and I will move, as empty nesters, to Memphis. We're so excited--and one big reason for our excitement is that SOWAL will now be a driveable distance again (and maybe even a proposition for a getaway long weekend). Moreover, we're moving south again and to a real city (upstate NY was fine in many ways, but urban it was not...and it lacked the civility of the south).
I could use some help from you Memphis folks on looking at housing etc. Could you PM me if you're willing to discuss areas of the city and real estate? thanks much.
New Yorker...but not much longer...

Good luck! The number of New Yorkers are dwindling! That's so exciting though. There will be less Sowallers in the Hamptons this year. :(

Congratulations, New Yorker. I have no information about Memphis either, but your life right now definitely is worthy of applause! :clap_1:
I'm from New England originally and I, too, find the south to be wonderful (though we now live in the midwest but eventually hope to spend more time in the south, say, in SoWal).

Welcome to the great state of Tennessee. You will enjoy Memphis. Is the college you will be working at Rhodes? Both of my girls looked there and it was a serious choice. Regardless, congrats on the new job. :clap_1: :clap_1:

I did alot of research before I moved to Columbia SC..I knew more about the real estate market than most of the realtors...I knew exactly where I wanted to look

Best wishes on your new opportunity AND move! Any move in a southerly direction is a good move.;-) Don't forget to say "y'all"- it is OK for Provosts to say that!:floor:

best of luck on your move ! :clap_1:
thanks y'all--yes, it is Rhodes--wonderful school (drop-dead gorgeous campus) and very nice people. I do feel blessed. My responsibilities will include not only faculty affairs, but also student ones. This will be a challenge!
I have looked on Realtor.com--and there are some simply beautiful houses. But I don't know much about neighborhoods in the city (and we want to live in the city, not the suburbs). We're going to Memphis in a few weeks to house hunt, so I hoped some of the "Memphisites" on this board might be of help.
We're so excited about coming "back south" and many of your "welcomes" are exactly what we have missed up here. We will miss our kids--but son was going to stay in Boston this summer anyway (can't blame him for that) and daughter starts college in early August (she's a very good field hockey player--and we hope she'll make her college Div 3 team). It's going to be weird as "empty nesters"--husband and I are even contemplating a dog (which he never wanted before.)
Our plan now is to get established in Memphis in July, get daughter off to college, and then take a long weekend at Seagrove by ourselves.

You are right about the campus, but we loved the "feel" of the place. Genuinely nice people that value education. The folks I know that live their live on "Mud Island". Good luck!

Welcome back to the south. Memphis is a BIG little town, if that makes sense. You will be getting to Memphis just in time for the humid summer. Have you checked Germantown or Collierville for places to live?

New Yorker, if you will pm me your name and number, I will put you in touch with a Realtor who has been working in Memphis for 30 years. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and is still enthusiastic about real estate. I know many people living in Memphis, and most all of them own or vacation in SoWal.
There may be many cities where you can research properties online, but if you don't have a clue as to which neighborhoods or communities to look, you will not enjoy searching for properties online, especially in Memphis. Memphis has much going on and there is definitely a southern mix of people living there.
