Maybe this doesn't seem odd to locals or folks native to small towns. But as a transplant I find it interesting that the local NBC affiliate's Sunday morning lineup consists of The Living Word presented by the Springfield Community Church followed by Meet the Press and then a full mass (not sure who produces this).

I personally am unoffended by it especially since my understanding is that both represent paid programming. On a side note, I find the Springfield Church program very entertaining. But I digress.

I can't help but wonder. What would happen if a Muslim service pooled resources together and bought airtime and presented a prayer service? Would the station allow it and take their money? Would folks find it odd or be offended?

I would only find it offensive if i was forced to watch. Thankfully i have enough other channels to turn to and this is a free country and i can watch whatever i want.

It's less about them spreading the message and more about using it as an advertising medium to get more paying butts in the pews.

As much as ya'll don't like church or the things of God, it seems to be in the top 5 subjects discussed on sowal and the people that are against it are the ones starting the threads on it. I would think there was a possibility that you might be truly searching for the truth, but that doesn't seem to be the case cause when truth is presented, dust flies. Moot subject when one isn't actually interested in an answer, but a so-called debate minus the solution. Do as you like, just making an observation. While I am at it, just to clear up any miscommunication, none of my former apologies were for what I said, I fully mean what I say, they were for the miscommunication of intent. My intentions are not to harm someone intentionally, but if you don't want to hear the truth, don't ask me.

Jesus said that He was the way, the truth, and the life, that no man comes to the Father except through Him. I didn't write the book, nor do I expect you to believe it.
The truth is the written word that God gave to us so that we could have an incredible life- not a list of do this don't do that religious strangleholds. People don't seem to be getting where God is coming from. If you are imprisoned in any way in your life- don't blame God- He already provided a way out. It's up to you now- you are responsible for your own decisions.

By the way, there are already mosques all over America, so Muslim t.v. is not out of the question. They obviously have other uses for their money since I personally have not seen any muslim services on t.v. Maybe more in the future. My take on it is I might watch out of curiosity, but I'm guessing it would probably bore me.

SWGB is making me laugh again. I just read one of his posts on this thread and he mentioned paying butts in pews- thats funny. God doesn't need your money, by the way, but you put money where your heart is

Oh and to answer your question Geo about do I believe it's detrimental to remove the things of God from our government and would I mind sayings from other belief systems being promoted, I will answer both at the same time. If there are principles of truth that generate goodwill and promote life from any source then I say, Let it be.

Geo - I've always seen Church TV - anywhere I've lived, including Birmingham and other smaller cities. I don't care to watch them, but I have tuned in a time or two, or accidently, just for the entertainment/shock factor. Remember Ernest Angely? Tammy and Jim? oh my goodness - those were indeed bizarre shows. the lives and stories behind the scenes were even more bizarre.

On the other hand, Mass is offered on TV everywhere. Not sure why because I'm pretty sure its a sin to physically miss mass - unless you are deathly ill or on vacation (I'm a big sinner). But, maybe its just for those Catholics who like to watch a mass on TV in addition. You can find mass on tv every day in some places. I do not think the mass on tv is intended to save you, heal you or take your money. well, maybe they want your money - I've never really watched mass on TV except midnight mass from St Peter's on Christmas Eve.

Sunday morning church on TV - its been around forever. Good for those who like to tune in with their coffee in their PJs and not have to leave the house. I reckon.

BH - I'm sorry but I don't follow you. this entire post seems to make a lot of assertions and assumptions about people on this message board and their beliefs. From what I know about our fellow members around here, most are very complex in their beliefs and thoughts about God, the universe, the planet and overall spirituality.

I grew up in a tv market where the church congregation supplied a number of Sunday morning services to the broadcast channels, and the local atheist group, such as they were, scraped together enough money to get 'American atheist' to air on the local cable public access channel, and no one thought that show was something to fuss about.

Is this the church that has the cute choir, but they all sing flat?
There are some good services on TV here, but I don't tune in. If I don't go to church on Sunday AM, I don't particularly want to watch it on TV either........usually going for some groovy music and/or a stupid movie at that point.

I grew up I'm Chicago which has a huge religious population. Sure, there were masses on TV but it was on the "UHF" channels-not on NBC all morning.

Interesting what you said about the atheist broadcast. But my question isn't as much about the opposite of religious programming as much as it is about a different religion.

I suspect that the muslim prayer service would be controversial in an area like ours whereas god fearing real Americans would just change the channel on the atheist message.

Most Muslims wouldn't broadcast the service anyway as it falls under the graven images sin. ;-)

If you've lived in the South for very long, you'd be used to this, My wife and I used to tune in to Ernest Angley (alleged 'Faith Healer') just to watch the theatrics of the healing and to hear him mispronounce words. If you watched the show for very long, you began to recognize some of the folks being healed.

Our favorite was a show after a 'healed' patron proceeded to collapse immediately after being 'healed'. Earnest defended his show, insisting that after all, they had called an 'amalance' after the person collapsed. The young lady discussing it with him said 1 phrase over and over again; "yes, that's right'. Phonetically, it was "yay-ess, that's rite" (with a very long i).

Ditto - I remember being a kid in Denver and always being bummed - saturday morning cartoons were great, sunday mass on every channel always sucked. (Of course, I usually ended outside instead on sundays so really it was a good thing.)

I don't believe physically missing church is considered wrong, just missing mass. One of the many reasons these services are televised by their respective churches.

I think there have always been a variety of protestant services broadcast on local tv and radio stations on Sunday mornings, for years. I haven't seen a local TV station in many years so I don't know much about the current religious programming on local stations.

Some day we may see American Muslim culture, religion and people all around and within our communities - perhaps on TV as well..

believe me I have a mother who will tell you that missing mass is a sin and that you cannot receive the eucharist on TV. and a priest brother who will tell you the same but he isn't nearly as worried about it (on my behalf) than the Mother of the Priest.

we have our American Catholics (you, me), and our Real Holy Catholics (mom).

There are some places in the US like Los Angeles and Detroit where the local Muslim population is large and well-known enough that people wouldn't really bat an eye at that kind of weekly broadcast. The issue for broadcast tv would be that Friday is the big prayers and services day of the week, and weekday programming commitments limit when you could put something like that on the air. Equal access for different faiths is one thing; bumping around Good Morning America or, even, worse General Hospital into a different time slot is another.

Tootsie, I was repeating what SWGB said in this thread, post #3, and I was answering a question Geo had asked me awhile back so I repeated the question cause it was similar to this thread. It would be better to address things I say to you instead of jumping in when I address other people. Your observations and mine are different. I prefer my words to stand as they are and not filtered through your understanding of what I am saying. Some people have hard feelings along with disagreements and remove friend requests. I can disagree with you, not have hard feelings, and not remove friend requests. If the shoe did not fit in the initial post-don't wear it. Cinderella

Tootsie, all I am saying is that I am addressing certain people about certain things and if it is not true in their case then they should go about their business and not worry about it. I am not assuming or making judgments, but am making observations of actions. This actually has nothing to do with you. The general statement of people removing friendship requests is addressed to people that have disagreed with a viewpoint and removed a friendship request, again- nothing to do with you. I simply said that I was able to disagree with people, yet, remain friends. Since this has nothing to do with you, don't worry about it. If SWGB has a question or Geo, they are men and well able to speak for themselves. I wasn't disagreeing with anything they were saying in the first place if disagreements concern you, just repeating what SWGB said in post #3 and answering a question Geo had asked me in another thread that was similar to this thread. As far as the people go that have removed their friendship, I still have no hard feelings, but understand that some people do. I do not expect everyone to agree with me, but some people believe you have to agree with them in order to remain friends. I believe you are trying to help, but don't. I would rather clear up any misunderstanding firsthand, not secondarily. SWGB and Geo haven't said anything so until they do just let it go. I wasn't even speaking to you in the first place. People have their own mouths, let them speak or it comes close to a dysfunction of sorts. There is no need to apologize, as you are just trying to make peace, but you can't fix everything. There is no hard feelings in me making an observation, just an observation- no more no less. The breaking of friendship agreements came up because issues are taken personally instead of a matter of a different point of view. Again, disagree with me if you want, I am not offended, but don't expect me to say everything that you agree with.

Tootsie, Just in case I possibly said something to hurt your feelings, I want you to know that I think you try harder than anybody to please people by trying to make peace and bring friendship and harmony in a very active way. So since you and I have different agendas(as Kurt says, we all have one)let's say peace to one another as I have nothing whatsoever against you and would feel bad if I did anything to hurt your feelings. Please forgive me if I have hurt your feelings, that was never my intention. Different life callings require different personalities, let's celebrate our differences knowing we are both needed in our own way.

celebrating differences is what its all about.

and respecting different opinions, beliefs, cultures, religions, lifestyles, etc... I really think its what we all strive for and maybe we need to be reminded of how to do that now and then.

so I wish you peace as well! and thanks for understanding.

ps. I edited my post to remove the part about swgb and geo. you're right. they are big boys and can take care of themselves.. so screw 'em! from now on they are on their own!!!!:floor:;-) they know I love 'em.

BH, help us out cuz your posts are confusing. I start a thread about churches buying ad space on NBC and I ask some pointed (and obviously loaded) questions. You respond with a post that is all over the road talking about taking back friend requests, not seeking truth, you answer questions asked to you on other threads, offer apologies, take back apologies, etc etc

I love to discuss these issues but can't read your mind. I only have your written words to go by. If u don't care to play, that's fine. But if that's the case please get off the court so the rest of us who choose to can engage each other. No offense intended. G
