Global warming is the normal precursor to an ice age?

Article on the Register called "Global warming may be normal at this point in glacial cycle"

From the article:

German and Russian scientists say that it is normal for an interglacial period like the one just ending to finish with one or more brief - in geological terms - spells of warming before the glaciers return.

...

The scientists, looking into the last interglacial period - the Eemian - which ended around 115,000 years ago, say they have found that that it ended with "significant climate fluctuations" before the rule of the glaciers returned.

....

Boettger and her fellow researchers say that the Eemian ice-free period wound up with sudden - in these terms - warming spells and serious changes in vegetation. Then the glaciers surged south, at their high tide 21,000 years ago reaching as far as Berlin.

Personally, I'd much prefer a bit of warming to an ice age.

FBB, thanks for the explanation!

It is ridiculous that it was so cold in March in GA that I wore my big fur to work on Thursday ... and needed it! I dunno about where you live, but where we live the weather has pretty much stunk since mid-August.

Ditto; wore my big coat, too! March wind kicked in Wed and Thur last week. Snow all day Tues., but look at today! Gorgeous and the ugly is already forgotten. I am not confident that we are out of the weeds, yet.......anything can happen in March!

Our daughter got stuck in Atlanta on Tuesday until after lunch due to the snow.

Remember that it snowed in ATL on March 1 last year? It snowed so much in SoSoATL that classes were cancelled.

The Global Warming crowd sure are silent. That's OK Al Gore will be selling Global cooling in a few years, & the librals will be wanting to try you in Federal Court if you disagree.:sarc:

One of the effects of climate change is extreme weather. That includes prolonged or abnormal periods of cold weather.

You are so correct.

Actually, emerging research indicates warming temperatures may actually reduce the occurence of extreme weather events, and that solar activity may play a large role in weather anomolies.

OK, all you Global Warming/Climate Change soothsayers. First of all, I don't know if there is really any "climate change" or not but I am firmly convience ther is cyclical weather change. What gives me such conviction? USAF weather school, four years getting and monitoring Rawindsonde data and observing the weather. Never once was "climate change" ever mentioned by our instructors, although climatology was taught and it was deemed to be cyclical in nature by all information available. Add to this, USAF flight school and USA flight school both which contained beau coup weather instruction and theory. Then there is flying all over the globe and observing weather and the land it affects. But then, in fairness, all this occurred before Al Gore so I guess it doesn't really count.

Kurt posted a video showing that during one of the hottest 10 years in recorded history solar activity was at an all time low.

Interesting that the military considers climate change something worthy of study huh?

How quick can you spot the same tired right wing talking point in these two posts?

Exactly. There's a lot of data out there, lots of different theories. The prevailing wisdom was that warming temperatures would continue unabated, until they stopped rising for a while. Sea levels were estimated to rise faster than they have based on current research. We've found that urban sprawl mucks with temperature data, glaciers that melt and those that grow, sun spots seem to play a role but nobody knows why...

Best not jump to any conclusions until we have a better understanding of things, don't you think?

To not study it would be stupid, to assume we understand it before we really do would be equally stupid.

Yep, I'm just gonna ride this one out. Why even start thinking about alternatives to fossil fuels. I mean we have what maybe 50-100 years of those left if we don't increase their use? It's funny to me that conservatives and nay sayers such as yourself are concerned that your grand kids will be paying down our national debt, but that's really not an issue if the planet is unliveable now is it?

I'm sorry, but your Fox News anchor attempt to win an argument by simply stating that you have, isn't going to work. Try again.
