Tom Delay: People Are Unemployed Because They Want To Be

From the Huffington Post:
Former House Majority Leader Tom Delay called Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) "brave" on Sunday for launching a one-man filibuster of unemployment benefits, arguing that they dissuaded people from going out and finding work.
Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," the Texas Republican said that Bunning's fiscal responsibility was commendable, even if his shenanigans (refusing to allow unemployment benefits to be considered by unanimous consent) nearly brought the Senate to a halt.
"Nothing would have happened if the Democrats had just paid for [the benefits]," Delay said. "People would have gotten their unemployment compensation. I think Bunning was brave in standing up there and taking it on by himself."
Asked whether it was bad strategy to make a budget stand on a $10 billion extension of unemployment (as opposed to, say, the Bush's $720 billion prescription drug package), Delay insisted that if the PR had been done right, Bunning would have been applauded. Helping the unemployed with federal assistance, he said, was unsound policy.
"You know," Delay said, "there is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits keeps people from going and finding jobs. In fact there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they don't look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out.
Host Candy Crowley: Congressman, that's a hard sell, isn't it?
Delay: it's the truth.
Crowley: People are unemployed because they want to be?
Delay: well, it is the truth. and people in the real world know it. And they have friends and they know it. Sure, we ought to be helping people that are unemployed find a job, but we also have budget considerations that are incredibly important, especially now that Obama is spending monies that we don't have.

Since you have to swear during each time period that you have looked for work in order to be eligible for unemployment benefits his argument doesn't hold water.

I am sure that there are a few people that do this, but most unemployed people would rather have a job, benefits, and more $ - not a fraction of their paycheck and a bleak future.

The last and only time (ever I hope) I was on unemployment, you had to actually physically appear at the Unemployment office (at the time, in Ft. Walton) and document that you had tried to find work. Once a week, or once every two weeks, think. The people who worked there treated me like I was a criminal or a floozie, like I was swindling them or something, for the measly benefits that were less than half my meager wages had been.

It was completely humiliating, adding insult to the injury of having been fired from a fulltime year-round position at 4 months' pregnant, at a time of year when there were no other jobs available here (this was 1987, September, in the era when they rolled up the sidewalks and closed everything but the post office and schools the day after Labor Day).

I don't know if that 's how they still do it...

No, now you can do most of it online, but they do still require you to apply for a certain number of jobs, post your resume with them, and keep records or your job search.

Visits to the job center and workshops are also strongly encouraged.

Believe if you tell them you looked for work and didn't they can get you for perjury and/or fraud.

A very small percentage (there are always those working the system ) is on unemployment because they prefer it to an actual job w/ better pay .

Look for more comments like this - it's the latest line of the banking interests, that the American people did this to themselves and that no one else is to blame:

Santelli on Predatory Lending: ‘You can’t cheat an honest man’ - Matt Taibbi - Taibblog - True/Slant

We want to be unemployed, we blew up the real estate industry by lying on loan applications, and none of this can be solved by any new financial regulations.

There will be a number of shameless prostitutes with this position. Delay's just the first.

What a crock. I hope Delay becomes unemployed soon!

P.S. My bank is celebrating the new CC rules and "move your money" program and has increased their lending - because they don't base their business on screwing their customers.

Tom Delay and Dick Cheney seem to be cut from the same cloth...I wish the news media would stop giving them an audience.

Unemployment benefits provide the recipient with breathing room to search for a decent job. If your benefits are $200.00 per week and you are offered a job at $200.00 per week you would have to be an idiot not to turn the job down down, you were making more than that before your lay off. If you haven't found yourself an equivalent position by the time your benefits have expired of course you will take something that pays less but you're thankful for the time the money afforded. This is where Delay has trouble connecting with those out of work. He and his kind feel you're a drain on society if you require a little assistance, what an ass.

A $200 a week job means you are working less than 28 hours at the minimum wage of $7.25.

It's hard to find a job where you make less than unemployment (which is taxed BTW).

Noone is living large on unemployment benefits - no matter what ol' Tom thinks.

They are living large as elected politicians though!

They also ignore the fact that to even qualify for benefits you have to have been employed full time for a certain time period by an employer who has paid into the fund, who has fired you, and who has approved your request.

In Florida it's 6 months full time and almost anytime the employer fights it you're up a creek. I've known people who liked to work the system and stay on unemployment. They lived in squalor and survived on a steady diet of Ramen. It takes a fairly unenlightened person to assume that is a preferred life style to live.
