Senate-passed health care bill would cut deficit

WASHINGTON - Congressional budget referees say Senate legislation that's now the foundation for President Barack Obama's health care plan would cut the federal deficit by $118 billion over 10 years.

The Congressional Budget Office says the $875 billion, 10-year plan would provide coverage to 31 million people who'd otherwise be uninsured. And it says the cost would be more than offset in savings from changes in Medicare and other programs.

Where in the world do you get these cooked numbers? What about the 190m+ that don't want or need it? The government is NOT your answer. They can't run a postal system or the Amtrack syste. They mismanage Social Security and Medicare right now. Geezz!! The number of citizens OPPOSED to this stuff according to Rasmussen Poll is now at 55%!! With less than opposed and don't care.

Getting numbers from the CBO is like trusting the late Ted Kennedy to drive you home over a desolate bridge at night. They were stacked numbers when the Republicans ran things, and they are stacked now by the Dems. Either party can make the numbers "work" in their favor. Stop listening to NPR, NBC, MSNBC, etc. Listen to Bloomberg TV if you want to get the REAL facts.

The only way they make those no's work is that they collect 10 yrs worth of revenue but pay out only 6 yrs in benefits in the first 10 yrs.. The second decade produces a $1 T+ deficit and anyone that believes they will actually crack down on waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid is living in LaLa Land. Besides if it were that easy why are they making it contingent on passing the bill??? Go after it NOW!!!!!! The CBO result is a good example of GIGO ( for those who aren't familiar, this stands for "Garbage In, Garbage Out" ). They can only use the numbers and assumptions Congress gives them, and why would Congress be less than truthful??????? Of course they also didn't include the $250,000,000,000 (that's 1/4 of a trillion ) "Doctor Fix" that is paid every year to help on reimbursments to supplement Medicare payments. Somehow this is not considered part of health care expenditures for future calculations of cost because "its been done in the past", ????? Only in Washington do you not have to count recurring costs in future budgets for that same line item!!!!!!!!! Thieves all.

Scooter, I believe you are much too intelligent to believe numbers like this published and put forth by the CBO. Just my opinion. ;-)

So now the CBO is just another propaganda machine? Since when? Yes, the Director is an appointee, but most of the rest of the staff are lifers, not the latest group of administration darlings.

So now we trust no one, listen to nothing, and wait for what - our next door neighbor to run the analysis and tell us what the numbers really are? I'm not going to rely on any news organization to do it.

Based on the cbo report, we should have senate bill + house reconciliation bill numbers here in the next couple weeks.

One assumption is reasonable to make - the cost is underestimated, so it would be far better to generate more revenue + cuts in existing spending so that cost << (rev + cuts).

The other key element is "bending the cost curve". Senate bill has some measures for that - a medicare reform commission, tax on expensive health plans, and a regulated exchange gatekeeper for subsidies. It will be interesting to see what the house comes up with. There are also a number of areas related to bending the curve that have been left out, if this passes hopfully repubs can tie off all the loose and hanging threads after the fall elections.

Ding! We have a winner!

I was doing an experiment to see how long it would take for anyone to actually discuss the topic or post a contradicting source.

I'll round it up to 5 hours - so Kiva is getting $50.

Weren't those against health care screaming from the rooftops when just 2 months ago the CBO came out with a report showing a huge deficit?

Folks the change that is coming will honestly be less scary than the changes you experienced around 14 years of age.

You don't trust the CBO but you trust pollsters. Do you believe each respondent was fully educated on the finer points of the healthcare bill when they answered the phone, or were they really just running through all the hysterical talking points when they answered the questions?

The current plans do, long term, run up the debt. Medicare cuts cover up to a point, and revenue will fluctuate and change. The overall cost of providing all these subsidies will rise.

The change that's going to come if we don't get our fiscal house in order *is* very very scary.

CBO Director = appointed politician.
From the CBO website:

CBO has just released its preliminary analysis of the President's budget. This analysis presents CBO's assessment of the budgetary outlook for the 2010-2020 period assuming enactment of the President's policy proposals and reflecting CBO's economic forecast and technical estimating procedures. The analysis compares that outlook with CBO's baseline projections, which-unlike the President's budget-assume that current laws and policies that affect federal spending and revenues remain unchanged.[/B] A report that presents the full analysis, including CBO's assessment of the macroeconomic effects of the President's proposals, will be published later this month.

Not cutting deficit

These numbers don't help. For one, administrative costs have not been balanced against these numbers, and I have heard estimates of more than $70 billion annually. Also, collecting 10 years of taxes for 6 years of services hardly is a fair analysis. I am more interested in the next 10 years. Disaster.

Yep. Democrats are really pulling a fast one on this. Projecting cost and revenue out from 2016 shows yet another unfunded entitlement in the making.
