21-Day Negativity Fast - who's with me?

I read this article yesterday by one of my favorite authors, Caroline Myss, about a friend of hers who's turned his life around (to say the least). Now that we're smack-dab in the middle of Lent, what better fast to partake in than a negativity fast? Coincidentally, 21 days from now is Good Friday - not a bad day for it to culminate on.

Anyone want to join me in this? I figure we can participate by posting only positive things on this thread so that if any of us needs a healthy dose of positivity, we can just come here. Conversely, I respectfully request that those who do not wish to join us honor our intent by keeping potentially negative thoughts and ideas off this thread. I guess this means no political forum for me for the next three weeks.

Regardless, I thought the article was inspiring and worth sharing:

Several years ago, I met a most exceptional man named Willie Smith. What sets Willie apart from so many others is the particular set of life circumstances that came together to make him the man he is today?a superb physical trainer with a huge client?le. He is also a minister and a man with rare and rich wisdom, the type that takes your breath away. Several years ago, for example, Willie and I were out to breakfast and the subject turned to politics. More to the point, I changed the subject to politics and began carrying on and on about my very negative sentiments about the now former president. Willie said nothing as I tossed out one fact after another as if I was an attorney presenting a closing argument to a jury on a life or death case. Finally exasperated, I asked, "How can you be so passive about this president?"

Willie's response was simple, clear, and profound: "I've never prayed for the man, therefore I have no right to judge him."

I was knocked silent by Willie's response. Because he had never prayed for the man, he had no right to say a negative thing about him. I realized I had never prayed for him either, and in that moment, I shifted. I thought about my tendency to judge others in general instead of first offering a prayer, and not just for them but for me, asking for assistance in healing the knee-jerk response to judge another person. Willie's wisdom had opened a passageway for me deep into my soul. But this gift for wisdom did not come without pain. In his prior life, so to speak, Willie was a drug dealer, an occupation he fantasized about from the time he was a young boy. He told me that in his youth he had spotted a dealer holding a handful of money, wearing lots of gold jewelry and looking like a big shot. That dealer made such an impression that Willie began to imagine himself in that role, exchanging the gifts of $5 and $10 bills he would receive from his elders for single dollars so that he could experience the sensation of having a wad of cash in his hand. Soon, a handful of years passed and Willie was the drug dealer he had envisioned himself becoming. He told me that while he was a drug dealer, he experienced one of those rare moments in which he realized, as he held a wad of money in his hand, that he had fulfilled his fantasized image of himself. At the height of his drug life, Willie was consuming $3,000 worth of cocaine and heroine a day and dressing the part of the successful drug dealer. He still keeps photographs of himself draped in a fur coat and gold jewelry as proof of his previous self.

So how did Willie go from being in the entrails of the drug culture to a loved minister and successful body trainer? Willie had what's known as a "conversion" experience.

Negativity Fast guidelines:

As a minister, Willie has his method of counteracting negative thinking carefully charted: meditation, referencing scripture and prayer. Not everyone is a minister, obviously, so for those of you interested in conducting a 21-day negativity fast, here are some suggestions as to how to maintain that fast when confronted with ordinary and extraordinary inner and exterior negativity:

Practical Wisdom

? Don?t strive for perfection and don't think in terms of 21 days. It's one day at a time.

? Keep your fast to yourself. Don't talk about it to others. <This thread is an exception.>

? Keep five favorite inspirational pieces at the ready that genuinely shift you into an altered inner state. These may be prayers, poems, a lovely selection from literature, lyrics from a song, a particularly meaningful letter, even words written to yourself?or a combination of the above. Refer to one (or more) when you feel yourself slipping into a negative place. <And feel free to post them here, please. They may help someone else, as well.>

? Use breathing techniques for centering.

? Walk away from stressful situations or conversations that are unnecessary to your life. Do not expose yourself to any unessential stress. <We can try.>

? Do mini-meditations and mantras to regroup. <You can download tons of great meditations on amazon.com for only 99 cents.>

? Do not share with others what is troubling you, as you are feeding the negative beast within. Instead, practice detachment. More often than not, what troubles others in your world has nothing to do with you. It's your own insecurities that make you think that the bad or sad moods of others are somehow connected to you. Remind yourself of that fact. Stay detached and do not interfere with the difficulties of others. Do not invite negativity into your life.

? Consciously look for what is good, beautiful, positive and loving in your life. Remind yourself to choose love, if only in the form of seeing the positive in something or someone.

? Practice gratitude for big and small things, for friends and family, for home and food?for the blessing of your life. <A gratitude journal is a powerful thing.>

? Have no expectations of any outcomes or rewards for your efforts. If you are going to do this fast, do it because it just makes so much sense.

Finally, remind yourself that on Day 22, if your life shows no signs of improvement from being loving and positive, you can always go back to being negative. Good luck.

I'm in! I try to remember to do a lot of these things all the time, but sometimes get carried away looking to what's wrong and needs fixinng rathr than enjoying and feeling happy about things that are already just dandy.

Here are a few happy thoughts of the moment -- both my beautiful sons are coming home tomorrow for Spring Break, and I've already put in a request with my personal traffic safety angels to bring them safely and happily home.

I have some great new comfy duds for my trip next week to take younger son to see schools.

And my breakfast was fantastic today. A salmon burger pan seared with fresh spinach, lemon juice, salt, pepper and dill.

Supper last night too, at A Few Good Apples in the same strip mall where Bruno's is located. Fresh, delicious, healthy.

So good things about family and food are topping my list today.

All that, and I am inspired with some new directions in my business.

DL, I absolutely love blue herons and this morning one was waiting on the pond's edge where I bring my dogs out each morning. Of course, my lab chased him, causing him to fly - loudly- to the bank across the pond. Did you know that they are considered a good omen and symbol of wisdom?

Susan, please post your salmon burger recipe. It sound delish. And I, too, will pray for your boys' safe arrival.

Kindness Breeds More Kindness, Study Shows
In findings sure to gladden the heart of anyone who?s ever wondered whether tiny acts of kindness have larger consequences, researchers have shown that generosity is contagious.

Goodness spurs goodness, they found: A single act can influence dozens more.

In a game where selfishness made more sense than cooperation, acts of giving were ?tripled over the course of the experiment by other subjects who are directly or indirectly influenced to contribute more,? wrote political scientist James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, and medical sociologist Nicholas Christakis of Harvard University.

Their findings, published March 8 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, are the latest in a series of studies the pair have conducted on the spread of behaviors through social networks.
In other papers, they?ve described the spread of obesity, loneliness, happiness and smoking. But there was no way to know whether those apparent behavioral contagions were actually just correlations. People who are overweight, for example, might simply tend to befriend other overweight people, or live in an area where high-fat, low-nutrient diets are the norm.

The latest research was designed to identify cause-and-effect links. In it, Fowler and Christakis analyze the results of a so-called public-goods game, in which people were divided into groups of four, given 20 credits each, and asked to secretly decide what to keep for themselves and what to contribute to a common fund. That fund would be multiplied by two-fifths, then divided equally among the group. The best payoff would come if everyone gave all their money ? but without knowing what others were doing, it always made sense to keep one?s money and skim from the generosity of others.

That's cool about the herons. I didn't know about the wisdom/good omen thing, but I always FELT like there was something exceedingly special beyond mere beauty when I was blessed with a flyover or be near to them.

Salmon burgers are embarrassingly fast and easy. I bought frozen wild-caught patties from FTHOI. Put a little oil in iron skillet (I used coconut oil today) and heat it up. Put your frozen or slightly thawed patties in there and sear a few minutes on each side. When almost done, take the patties out of the pan and put in a LOT of fresh spinach, then put the patties back on top of the spinach. In no time the spinach will have cooked down and it's time to serve.

I added all the seasonings at serving -- a light sprinkle of Himalayan sea salt and fresh black pepper, plus a LOT of dill and generous squeezes of lemon. That's all I ate, but it would be nice to have a side of quinoa (my current favorite grain) or rice, or some sort of lovely bread...

Miss Critter,

Thanks for the song. It reminds me of when the boys were little, and we lived at what is now the South Walton Montessori Academy, and at that time we had intentionally left the grounds almost entirely wild. Lots of scrub and vines and shelter for critters. The lightning bugs LOVED it, and every year when they came out, the whole place was like a magical fairyland with hundreds if not thousands of tiny, blinking, moving lights. We would go out and hang with the lightning bugs every evening. I've never in my life seen so many at any one time, except there.

Thanks.

Susan, thanks for the recipe. I'll pick up some patties when I'm at FTHOI today. I've been looking for high-protein, gluten-free, egg-free breakfasts for Jr. Critter - challenging, to say the least. But we just discovered that we all like quinoa. Yay!

Thanks also for the memories of lightning bugs. Believe it or not, we had tons of them, too, in New Orleans, of all places. Of course, I grew up on the West Bank in what was a fairly newly-developed area back then. My sister and I would catch them in a jar, with holes punched in the lid, of course, and let them go after a few minutes. But they were so magical! It saddens me that overspraying has relegated them to a memory that this generation will never enjoy.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that we had a no-spray sign so we'd be free from SWMCD's spraying. No mosquito problem at all, because I sprayed with a garlic product that kept them away for months.

I somehow managed to convince SWMCD to test a similar (not same brand) product that many municipal departments around the country are using. For some reason, SWMCD's results showed that the stuff didn't work. I don't understand. Maybe it's the kind of thing that needs to be sprayed all around the yard and bushes, not just along the street which is how their trucks are set up to do? We sprayed all the bushes and vines and weeds and everything, and were free to wander without getting bothered....

Great idea MC. She is one of my favorite writers/speakers too.

I love Blue Herons too. One day I was driving down Chat Holley going to pick up my granddaughter, it was the middle of the morning and not any other cars around...suddenly off to the side of the road just in the trees I saw a big Blue Heron, so I slowed the car and finally stopped just to watch him.

As I sat there in my car, he began to walk across the street in front of me--I was enthralled and didn't want to breathe for fear I would scare him away...as I sat there watching he crossed the street to the other side of road, walked slowly toward the trees, and then, stopped, turned and looked right at me as if to say, "have a good morning" and then, in one glorious sweep, he flew up and away toward the Gulf.

It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life.

Mosquito Repellent | Tick Repellent | Natural Mosquito Control by Mosquito Barrier

This is the brand the SWMCD tested. The brand I used in Pt. Washington was of all things, Martha Stewart's brand, that I found by happy chance on a rare excursion to K-Mart. I haven't seen that in many years, don't knw if it's still being made. I think this was before she spent some time behind bars.

There is a faint smell of garlic for a day or two, very faint, doesn't last, but the repellant or whatever property lasts a good while, even through several rains. You want to spray when it's not raining and likely not to rain for a day or so.
