Stupak Announces Deal With White House on Abortion Funding Ban
1. An executive order cannot replace legislation passed by Congress.
2. Even if it was Constitutional, the word of one man can be changed by one man, any time he chooses.
3. Once this door is opened, it will be almost impossible to close it again.
Maybe his district will make him unemployed this November. Somebody this gulliable should not be in his position.

I knew there was something wrong when I agreed with your thread title.
I think Stupak is stupid, but that is because of the realities of women's health care, not politricks.

Every person in Congress can be bought for some price, or they wouldn't be there.

Please join me and others and give Congressmans Stupak a call of "thank you" tomorrow morning. He is on the other side of the issue of abortion as far as this Dem. is concerned, but at least he know that he must do the right thing!

I hope you and stupid er Stupak have a few trillion laying around to pay for this. And I would appreciate your assistance in paying the new taxes I will have to pay with absolutely no benefit to me. I know ya'll hate us calling the chosen one a socialist, but all this redistribution of wealth sure sounds like the definition I learned in Political Science.

Trillions lying around to pay for it?
How much does an abortion cost? Bearing in mind most women who can afford one forego insurance so that there is no paper trail for some rude and ignorant S.O.B. to rub in their faces at a later date.
How much does a pregnancy and baby cost? It's a hell of a lot more.
So much more that my insurance company won't pay for one unless I add coverage to my policy more than 60 days before I conceive one.

I was refering to the entire bill, not just the abortion component. Because babies "cost" I guess the government will next prohibit us from having them.
One thing that continues to suprise me about this whole debate is the number of people who seem to think insurance companies are not supposed to make a profit or should provide unlimited care at a minimum premium. I would suggest a class in economics or business administration will cure such notions.
What scares me about this bill is that these same people will be administering the program. Without an idea of profit/loss the deficit will grow exponentially.

He's weak. He waited until after there were enough known "yes" votes to say he had changed his mind. That way he could say his vote didn't matter.

I have a greater appreciation for nuns at this moment in time. They are showing more independence and seem to be helping sway votes.

' ....... Stupak got in hot holy water when he told Fox News, ?When I?m drafting right-to-life language, I don?t call up nuns.? He followed that with more scorn for sisters, telling Chris Matthews that the nuns were not influential because they rarely try to influence ? which makes no sense ? and because ?they?re not the recognized spokesperson for the Catholic Church.? He listens to the bishops, he said, and antiabortion groups. ........
On Friday, Tim Ryan, an antiabortion Democrat from Ohio, took to the House floor to say he had been influenced by the nuns to vote for the bill.
?You say this is pro-abortion,? he said to Republicans, and yet ?you have 59,000 Catholic nuns from across the country endorsing this bill, 600 Catholic hospitals, 1,400 Catholic nursing homes endorsing this bill." ..... '

Most of the support for this bill has been bought and paid for. Otherwise, why can't a party with huge majorities in both houses pass it on the first reading?

I have no problem with companies making a profit, but the insurance industry makes a profit at the expense of people's lives and that is not right.
There is absolutely no reason that anyone-- bankers or insurance and drug company executives, should take home millions of dollars in bonuses and profits when they have made it either from denying coverage to customers who have gotten sick; children with preexisting conditions; and workers who lose their jobs; or cancer patients who must pay $3600 for one dose of medicine.
There is no reason a banker should get a bonus when his company is bailed out by the taxpayers money.
Decent business practice is one thing--greed and dishonesty coupled with incompetence is something completely different. This kind of behavior is what I used to expect in third world countries where there was no civil government--

That really sums it up for me.
Noone is saying you can't/shouldn't make a profit - just that there are basic rules for how you do so in a civilized democratic society.

Maybe we should reform the tax code to a flat tax so that these companies and executives will finally pay taxes like the rest of us.
We should have never bailed any of them out to start with. Let failures fail.
As far as profits all companies make a profit at the expense of others.

I'm betting you'd be singing a much different tune if your money had gone up in smoke with one of those banks.

I'm confused. Which party are you talking about and which bill?
That doesn't happen with the holy repubs?

It was never about abortions for Stupak, it was about getting his camera time and a little something for good measure.

This particular bil is the health care bill and the democrats. Republicans have been guilty in the past. Does this excuse the democrats this time?
I have taken off my rose colored glasses concerning my party, I suggest you do the same with yours.;-)

I find it interesting that you think I'm a Democrat

What I have been challenging you repubs on is all of your bellyaching about the evil democrats who do behind the scene deals, are worse than the devil etc.....but yet seem to act as if YOUR side are angels. They are just as bad if not worse.
When is the last time "your" leadership condemned on national television, press etc. all of the hatred that has been spewed by the Lush Bimbaugh's of the world or the protesters who are calling the dems reps (who happen to be THEIR colleagues) Ngger, Fggt, etc? Instead, they stand up on balconies acting as cheerleaders encouraging these acts.
When was the last time that you contacted YOUR congressmen and INSIST that they go public and condemn such acts of hatred? Everyone says that it is just a small group, but if the repubs don't stop that small group you will find some wacko who will do another OK bombing or worse.
Do you really think that the repubs Laurel and Hardy team they had on the agenda for President the last time around would have been any better?
If you do, you still have those rose colored glasses on....;-)

If you read my post again, you will see that I said at the expense of people's lives. Many ( all, if they are to stay in business) companies make a profit and support their customers and their communities in many ways. For the most part, the for profit hospitals do well, but they do not do well at the expense of people's lives.
Tell me one other industry besides the insurance industry that has the power to absolutely decide if a person gets care or not; gets a specific medication or not; or who, after years and years of the customer paying for something (insurance) turn around and deny the claim, or cancel a policy, just when a customer needs it most. The system without reform allows a company of strangers to invade the most private parts of our lives and make decisions that can often end those lives. And, no matter how one spins this information, the fact remains that in a civil society, that is not right.
I buy a car and the dealership makes a profit; I pay for a house and the seller makes a profit; I buy food and the grocery store makes a profit--but none of these does it at the expense of my (or my children's) life or health.
There may be many ways to change and improve the sytem...that may be up for discussion. What is not up for discussion IMO is that it needs to be changed to reflect something more than profit making. I am glad that the president and the Democrats in Congress made this effort. At least they are doing something besides whining and obstructing any efforts at improvement.
