I'm talking about the ones they have on signs in front of churches. I saw one today "The key to heaven hangs on a nail".:yikes: Anyone else want to share messages they found to be offensive and/or just plain stupid.

Indeed, a lot of them are. I didn't think this one was though.

Were they referring to Tiger Woods in that one?

My favorite was several years ago during Christmas. A Southern Baptist church was having a live nativity scene that included sheep, donkeys and a camel.

They put on their marquee "Tonight, Live Erotic Animals"

I was so disappointed....

Offensive? No. Just plain stupid? No. Misguided? Perhaps.

I always liked the classic "Fire insurance available here".

I love the ones that are positive and humorous/punny.

There is one on 98 between Sowal and Pier Park that usually does a good job. The last one I recall was a dental joke: "Prevent truth decay, brush up on your Bible" or something like that.

There is actually a site called sayingsforchurchsigns.com Designed to enlighten, offend, cause guilt, make you laugh or possibly save your soul.

Most are funny and quite witty. Lucifer, that nail thing might have something to do with Holy Week coming up next week.

Of course, but that makes it no less dumb and offensive.

Maybe you're the only one offended? It's a harsh statement, but I am not offended.

I also find it a little graphic/distasteful.

My upbringing was focused on the positive messages of Jesus, not the crucifixion and I find it rather creepy. I know the theology behind it, importance etc. but that doesn't make it something you want to get a visual of while driving down the road.

I could do without the messages period, but some of them are kind of amusing and funny. Some are witty, some are funny because they're dumb. Some use scare tactics and I wonder whose attention they are trying to grab. The non-believers??? Give me a break. This kind of imagery is why some of us saw the light (at least in our opinion) and rejected Christianity in the first place. Anyway, this is the first time I saw a message and was offended to the core, for my own unique reasons of course, but I figured maybe others have had similar experiences based on their beliefs or lack thereof.

Ha! It's not just you. Wal-mart has that vibe for sure. I can block it out if I need to though. Always end your shopping someplace else.

Signs in general can be offensive. This appeared on a BBQ joint in PC after the local gay bar burned:

"Now we know what cures AIDS"

That's cold, but consider the county.

I especially hate the ones that say "do this, don't do that". The ones that say "anybody caught trespassing will be shot on site" I'm not too thrilled with either.

That's offensive, mean-spirited and unless they have some crazy medical training and research stipend, wholly untrue, which is different from the original post. One can argue regarding the original post that based upon their faith, while the imagery is difficult, it is true.

I could do without the billboards with the picture of a Preacher in his tailored suit along with his bejeweled wife and the name of their church.

when we drive up I-65 to louisville to visit family, we get to see all kinds of huge billboards with extremist christian messages. based on the billboards, i'll be going to hell because i'm not christian. oh, well...

Since the most known symbol for Jesus is the cross upon which he was nailed, how is the sign offensive? The cross is around the necks of many Christians. It is also found in most every church, and in many cases, it is found with Jesus nailed to it, I guess to remind everyone of his horrific death. So, a sign with some words doesn't seem offensive at all.

Bobby J, that sign is just plain funny!

I like this one: "God expects spiritual fruit, not religious nuts"
